Something my grandpa taught me about improvised poles - Tie your line or cordage at the butt of the pole, and run it down the length of the pole, just throwing on half-hitches every so often to keep it tight to the stick. That way, if you snag or catch something big enough that it pulls the end bark off of the stick or the stick snaps, you don't lose your line, hook, and fish. :)

What I like about this system is that the same active fishing pole can be used for passive fishing when you need to tend to other tasks.

I was taught by my grandad abt hand reel and the fishing snare. Him and a few of his mates taught me abt snares and using catapults for hunting game an fowl. Him an his mates were old school poachers an pest control, taught me an cousin abt shelters an field craft. I was taught this at 8yrs old, I'm 54 now, way before the web an bushcraft Betty's. The point I'm getting at tho, your showing similar old school stuff an I respect you for the fact that you don't hunt it if you ain't going to eat it. Corporal your videos on your Ridgeline saved my life tonight. I won't go into much detail cause of ignorance on some people's comments. Brother you saved my ass by teaching me how to move my ass, In a hurry up situation. Flash flood is no joke and I had to haul ass out of the way yet still saved my gear and with the pull off the cord and toggle I got out before a wall of water over took me. Why I didn't just leave it behind and run??? I can't answer that clearly I woke up from my nap and had to think fast. I remember all you taught us on moving and knowing what to do in a fubr situation. Thank you I'm forever greatful I solute you thank you for your service and those like you, damn few!

I'm glad theres videos like this. I probably won't ever get into a serious survival situation but just the idea that I have this knowledge tucked away is pretty nice. L + 7 + cord of sorts + hook of some sort and that's one more opportunity to eat if you're stranded plus afaik the L7 can be used for like most small game snares as well just replace fishing line and hook with a lil wire loop and boom fish and small game without having to hunt it yourself. Edit Spelling in sentence 1 smh

How do you use a fish as bait? Just cut a chunk of it and use it like powerbait?? Serious question haha
@KiwiDragn
@KiwiDragn 4 жыл бұрын
@@nahuelmartinez6203 I've never done it myself but I've seen guys hook a minnow and toss it in alive. I think the concept is the same: catch a small fish, cast it or leave it like a lure for an even bigger fish. The stuff that attracts fish are shiny things and moving things. Eventually, so long as you leave a fish moving on the line in the same area and there's a bigger fish around it'll get a bite. Again, never done it myself, this is just applying the concept to something else I've seen done with minnows as bait.

I've been watching a fisherman in England that fishes with bread, corn and canned meat. That works, too. As one old timer said, if they're biting, they're biting. Excellent video.

Your clear concise instruction and video work really are a pleasure to watch. Then you used paracord for bait and was instantly fishing when I would have still been poking around looking for a grub or something. Absolutely dig your videos, I’m learning! One suggestion though if that’s ok. When handling a fish that you’re planning on releasing, it’s good practice to wet your hands first if possible and try to handle the fish as little as possible. Fish have a natural slime coating that protects them from disease and our hands can remove that coating. Keep up the good work!

I’d be running the line continuously from being tied off to the ‘heel stake’ with a couple of meters free line to the the heel of the rod, then several half hitches along the rod to the tip (incase it snapped, and to prevent if from just slipping off), and continue without cutting at the toggle (just two loops around the grooves). Also, when selecting my pole, I’d leave a couple of branches, at least 10cm long, that lock the pole behind the Y post. This all can ensure that a bigger fish or eel, can’t just take your hard work for a swim.

I’ve seen this trap before but a sapling was used instead of a severed pole! Allows you to skip the step of securing the pole to the ground! Still a great idea for smaller fish, but a good sized catfish could pull that in unless it’s very secure! If I depended on this trap I would have to use a sapling already rooted into the ground for better security! That’s definitely a great option if no saplings are on the bank.

Didn't make the lake Monday. Underestimated the water levels and temps. All the creek crossings where shin deep waders in the snow melt creeks. Made 6 crossings then I got a little green from the altitude. We rigged the shelters and grabbed bags and quilts about 4:30! Lol

We used a similar system in Brazil to catch large lizards, usually an overhanging branch rather than a pole. It had to be strong enough to lift their front feet off the ground.

That’s pretty good. What I do is make main trigger and live overhanging limbs without cutting it off the bush or tree.

I always wanted to build something like this for a regular pole. Cast your line, have an extension pole tip with the trip wire attached that hooks lower on the pole......fish pulls on your line and pop !.....reel it in !

Note : The wooden trip mechanism could just hook to a lower eye.
