RIP Diana. You were always my idol and hero and your Emma was my favorite Avengers character. Both Diana and Honor broke new ground on TV as a strong female lead. I loved how she was the more athletic and skilled in martial arts than Steed and often saved his hide! I've loved her for all of my adult life and still do. My heart is broken.

I agree with you too. Diana Rigg was my favorite. She was the one I saw mostly. An I remember another lady who came on after Diana. She was a Russian woman, but she didnt become a regular.

I loved Diana Rigg in the Avengers - I was in high school and she showed us that a woman can be feminine and strong all at the same time - she wore slacks, did karotie (spelling) and drove a sports car with the top down. All the things woman mostly didn't do in the movies back then. She didn't faint, swoon, or scream while defending herself - she was strong and beautiful.

Half a century old and The Avengers has become an iconic piece of British television. I'm miles too young to have seen any of the series when they were first broadcast, but I'd like to say this: Joanna Lumley is simply one of the most inspirational women to have ever lived; and I think this shows why. She instantly got the audience on her side and they adored her; her humour and her pride. The Avengers was an iconic piece; but so is she in her own right

Just a little fact....if it hadn't been for Linda Thorsen's huge popularity as Tara King in France, then it would of been very unlikely that the New Avengers would of been made. As in France the Tara King season was regularly re-shown for years, which then led to a Perrier TV advert, with Macnee and Thorson in the mid 70's also being very popular, which then led to the French offering a shed load of money for the Avengers to be reborn. Mind you by Season 2 of the New Avengers, things went pair shaped on the series, which then led to its demise!......anyway the Avengers girls deserved their BAFTA's.

This is so outstanding seeing this award presentation on KZfaq right now, since I never saw it previously. The U.S. started with the Diana Rigg episodes, and it was only recently on a Memory TV show that I saw all episodes even going back even prior to the Honor Blackman years. I did watch the New Avengers and had forgotten Patrick Mc Nee appeard on it was well, but I sure remembered Joanna. It was a great TV show, and I guess all part of the reason many years later I liked visiting England in person. Mr. Steed was terrific as the English gentleman. From St. Louis

I love that it's bookended with Honor and Joanna, the alpha and omega of the Avengers ladies. I was too young for the original run, but I remember watching The New Avengers as it premiered. I will always have a soft spot for it, warts and all, because it introduced me to this great cult classic. ❤️

@fromchomleystreet3 жыл бұрын
I’m only now realising that Emma Peel wasn’t Steed’s original partner. Funny how the replacement became the classic icon, rather than the original. Blackman is far better remembered for her Bond stint than for the Avengers, whereas for Rigg it’s the other way round.
@mckavitt133 жыл бұрын
Sadly. Unjustly, even.
@filipchung21212 жыл бұрын
@ fromchomleystreet Honor was in the series for a very short time only and it was at the very beginning. In fact, she was the original Avenger girl.
@fromchomleystreet2 жыл бұрын
@@filipchung2121 It actually wasn’t the very beginning. She didn’t enter till the second season. The show was originally about a male doctor whose fiancé was murdered in the first episode, hence “Avengers”. Even Steed was a supporting character. The show completely transformed from what it originally was.
@filipchung21212 жыл бұрын
@@fromchomleystreet Thank you for lighting up my lantern. I did not know about how this serie started. I started watching Avenger when Diana Rigg appeared and stopped watching it when Joanna Lumley filled in much later. In between these two I love the delightful Linda Thorson. I always hear about Honor Blackman, who I came to know in James Bond's Dr No. I have never seen her in the serie. So I presumed wrongly that she appeared in the first season. I was so young thence. That is my only excuse. You did your homework well since you realised that Diana Rigg was not the original and first partner of "mr Steed."
@fromchomleystreet2 жыл бұрын
@@filipchung2121 Ian Hendry was Steed’s first “Avengers girl”. He probably didn’t look quite as good in a leather catsuit as his successors did. There are bits of those first episodes on KZfaq. It’s amazing how utterly different the original show was to what it evolved into. The tone is completely different too - deadly serious (we watch the hero’s fiancé get murdered in the first few minutes).

Unfortunately The Avengers didn't go global until Peel era, we didn't get to enjoy Mrs. Gale here in North America until the '90's.
@mckavitt133 жыл бұрын
@@unowen-nh9ov My experience precisely.
@unowen-nh9ov3 жыл бұрын
@@mckavitt13 I can't compare them, Mrs. Gale was more hard-edged, Emma more playful - since Blackman had to create her role with scripts written for a dude, while Rigg wrote her own dialogue, this is to be expected.
@mckavitt133 жыл бұрын
@@unowen-nh9ov Emma Peel was, I just read, also originally written for a man... she & Steed often wrote their own dialogues, but it was not the rule. For me, Cathy Gale had it all. She left to do her Bond film. Later, I learnt that Rigg left because she didn't really enjoy it. The writing, dipped in US ink, was less intelligent, more playful (read seductive), more vapid. She was a Shakespearean, for goodness sake! How long could she see herself as a spy-kitten?

it was such a fun show, though the writers went a bit off the rails for a while with the supernatural stuff that really didn't fit the premise of the show. Funny how "Mrs. Peel" is the only one EVERYONE remembers - she was that remarkable for the times (and still is the dream of many a guy!).
@garydouglas9413 Жыл бұрын

@unowen-nh9ov3 жыл бұрын
Hafner only appeared as receptionist to Hendry's character, she left when he did, Stevens did half a dozen episodes as a nightclub singer, so neither were Steed's partner & how many of their episodes even still exist to be seen? They're not whitewashed, they didn't make history.
