I thought it was remarkable how they actually sold Loki as the villain. Sure, he had an alien army, but he was the main antagonist. I thought audiences would have trouble buying that a guy who was defeated by one of the Avengers would be a credible threat for the whole team but they managed it. It's very unusual to see that. I guarantee the studio had to be talked into that because of that exact reason. But ultimately they obviously were and it was a good decision. I'm kinda sad he's not in the sequel though.

The plot didn't need to be complicated, the movies that led up to avengers has been filling up everything you need to know. It's not a stand alone movie, its the sum of its parts. Iron man set up SHIELD plots, the increasing conflict of tonys tech with a changing world, Thor set things up for space and beyond, and Cap set things up with marvel history like stark senior and cosmic cube and a sense of nostalgia of a past you can't return to.

the thing about the avengers movie, is that it isnt JUST these 2 hours and 20 mins, its all of the movies leading up to it as well, its all a huge story arc and thats where all of your character development is. Take a look at any of these characters at the beginning of their movies and tell me they havent changed in anyways. thats why this is such an amazing movie, it shows how far they have come personally and how they have become part of something wayy bigger than themselves
@anyankafan

Notice how Loki WAS defeated pretty easily? In a fair fight, all three of those characters beat him. What made him a threat wasn't his powers personally, it was what he was bringing to the table - I.E the giant alien army. Loki was a great villain, and it was good to see threads from previous movies actually having an effect on later ones rather than abandoning them.

I think it deserves a lot of praise, it just depends on the kind of praise. Marvel managing a huge cinematic crossover of multiple films with different characters from the get go + building it into its on "universe" was a fantastically ambitious project and succeeded. And Whedons' focus on character interaction made everything somehow more believable as well as fun to watch. But yes the it suffers the usual for a hollywood action flick in terms of plot advancement, suspense, action sequences etc

That was just a rumor earlier that Kevin Feige squashed and said no that's not going to happen. Trust me Joss Whedon did not tease Thanos in the end of the film just to have him never appear in a Avengers sequel. Since Marvel was always planning at least 3 Avengers sequels, I knew they wouldn't show their hand with Thanos too early and use him in the second film, he's too big to use early, only to have a lesser villain follow him up.

I was actually disappointed by this movie. It's just... stuff that happened and then it was resolved, more stuff happened and we saw consequences of it. It lacked some general direction, an idea for a plot. It's really bad compared to eg. first Iron Man or Amazing Spider-man. A little too random. Pure action, only a little plot with no actual meaning.

So what was the general dea of plot in this movie?
@kurtmorr
@kurtmorr 10 жыл бұрын
***** Loki (thor's evil adopted brother from Azgod) stole a powerful taserak (a powerful item capable of opening up a wormhole from one solar system to another) and is using it to allow the frost giant king ( I forget his name) to send his army of invading demons through to reek havok on the earth so he can take over and rule the planet. It's pretty much following the comic book. Maybe not the most complex plot but just about as much as you'd expect from a movie of this type. Villans on James Bond movies plan on taking over the world, their plots aren't much more complex then this one, perhaps more realistic.

kurtmorr "Asgard". That's not what I meant, I saw the movie and I know what it was about. What I meant is that there is nothing you could take away from this movie, something that goes beyond what is shown. From a movie I usually expect the shown events to be just means of showing something, not the goal. For example, Amazing Spider-man was about a boy who gets spider powers and a scientist desperate enough to turn himself into a lizard just to get his arm back. Yet at the same time, it is about Peter Parker growing up, and learning how to deal with his powers, every little situation Spidey gets into is another lesson from which he takes somethign and adds up to the idea of a hero. Should he pursue revenge? Does it make him a hero? Should he tell his beloved one? Would it put her in danger? It is like a series of pointers "that's wht hero should do", "that's what hero shouldn't do" shown by a story of an amateur hero. It tried to tech something, what's rigth and what's wrong, what's wise and what's stupid. That's the "general idea of plot" I had in mind. The only aesop you can take away from the movie is "when invaders invade, fight them". As you said, it should be expected from an action movie to have a plot like that, but it's not a mere action movie, it's something that was suppoused to be an ultimate nerd experience, the first modern crossover superhero movie. It turned out to be just fights and explosions, so I am disappointed. EDIT: Just to cover my back, I wanted to clarify that what I look for isn't neccessarily a "what you should do" aesop, its just that it's the case with spider-man. I want some deeper thoughts from writer, some kind of message he wants to rely on the audience.
@kurtmorr

***** so basically I assume you're saying they put a lot of stuff in the movie and didn't go anywhere with it? It's ironic because I just got through re-watching the 3 poltergeist movies and that's how I felt about the 2nd and 3rd ones although I still enjoyed them.

Undoubtedly, this movie is as great as most are saying. What struck me is how unique, deep yet fun the entire experience turned out. What an outstanding film! I don’t want to make trouble but Marvel’s Avengers depth of emotion and character combined with tremendous action means this delivers what most will now consider to be THE best comic book movie ever produced. It almost can’t even be argued at this point, and that’s really saying something.

Overall I loved the dialogue. I mean, Samuel L. Jackson did have some forced dialogue, but I feel like he always does (and I thought some of it was fitting since this is a comic book movie). I loved Loki in the movie, though; I just thought he really stood out as a villain based on his personality and his motives for being evil, and I thought he had some great dialogue. I think the best dialogue (along with Loki) comes from the other Avengers whenever they're around each other.

Three points to make here.... 1.The Avengers should get an oscar for existing alone not for being good or great or fantastic just for being made. 2. Joss Whedon WILL GET A OSCAR NOM FOR BEST DIRECTION. 3. The best part of the Avengers is....(wait for it).....Loki. Yes, Thats right Loki. Without Loki this movie falls apart without the slick, threatening, somewhat charming Snake-in-the-grass. Hiddleston is damn near prancing through the scenes as Loki. Tom Hiddleston SHOULD GET A GOLDEN GLOBE NOM.

I was looking forward to both TDKR and this for forever. The avengers is a great ACTION movie. Plot is really simple, characters show little individual development and all seemed completely untouchable. Great action scenes but at the same time they got boring because the characters were basically invincible in combat.

I am an old dude but I feel today's movie-goers are so in need of being thrilled to death that they over look the true quality of a movie. In other words I feel their "thrill expectations" are set too high. Being a huge fan of Marvel I feel The Avengers is by far the best Super hero movie I have seen.This is my opinion. I also felt the first Hulk was absolutely brilliantly done. Someone did their homework and captured the soul of the Hulk comics of the 60's and 70's. It told the story.

I agree - Hulk and Vision, even though Hulk really was never a "team member" per-se. Hulk is the most simplistic, yet most powerful. Vision is perhaps the most complex. Both men are potentially immovable objects, from completely different perspectives. I also LOVE the introduction - after the credits - of Thanos. He was - by far - my favorite villain. A Titan who is obsessed by death, rather than just power. A2 should be something to wait for.

Sorry about using the "most people agree with me" defense; I wasn't using it to say you were wrong, since it's your opinion. However, I completely disagree, and I consider myself a film fan. I don't go into movies for the action and cool effects, but rather for the story and the characters. The story itself is nothing special, but the way the characters are balanced and fleshed out was fantastic, in my opinion. Believe me, I judged every aspect of this movie, and there's nothing I don't like.

Fortunately they all had their own themes ( Blade was more urban and grounded, The Amazing Spider-man more heartfelt and dramatic) but the Avengers just really really worked. The action was well written Loki was perfectly written by not really being an individual threat and needing help the only thing

Dude, don't even. I don't really think that the shade of green really matters too much. Are you trying to a pick wall paint or pick a type of Hulk. I thought the first Hulk was cool, because it actually showed him jump to incredible bounds, bust through anything that overcame him, and he ACTUALLY GREW more than 16 feet tall and even bigger than the others in Rage. Each Hulk was good, and I would agree if someone said the 3rd Hulk is best, but the first Hulk could kill the 2nd Hulk.

He went from not giving a crap about anyone and being completely self-absorbed and making $ off war to actually willing to sacrifice himself for others & caring about what happens to them while keeping his personality. I enjoyed all aspects, the writing, the directing, the acting, the SFX, the score etc. A film this big with so many stars shouldn't have worked, but i did for me, a fun and entertaining film that was also quite intense and serious at times. You're completely right. Haters gonna hate. It's kind of a base human reaction to attack prominent things, envious things, to try to tear them down as and bring one's self closer to their level. This had benefits when we lived in small tribes and criticizing your rivals, even when not deserved, could in fact help you, but behaving this way towards something like a movie in youtube comments in the modern day is of course ridiculous, the people doing it just don't know any better.

I do understand that this was an extremely highly anticipated film, with several Marvel fans recognizing that an Avengers movie was on it's way with the releases of Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Thor, however, it was still a little too overhyped. It's just the fact that it finally got made and was pretty decent. The film itself shouldn't belong in the list of movies to watch before you die, it was just nice set up to something big, simple as that. It was funny though

Good for you my friend. Cheers from the USA. I am of Norwegian Blood,I live in America but cherish my Norse background. Thor rules and Hulk is his friend but Hulk is actually all alone in the original comic books. Thor is also alone however his enemies are from Asgard. Great to hear from you my friend Jernet79 from Norway.

Say what you want about Wheddon, the guy is a master of snappy, interesting dialogue. Wasn't a huge fan of CITW, but the dialogue was great, strip away the action and wow factor of avengers, and i think the dialogue is the best part. At times it may move almost too fast for the average movie goer to pick up on. Again just my opinion, I like breaking down these kinds of movies from a technical standpoint.

so you rather like Loki wearing green spandex with over sized gold plated armor and a super yellow cape ?

I also think that people might be taking this a little too seriously. It wasn't a masterpiece, it just a nice, entertaining action movie. I didn't like it the first time, because I didn't understand it, or what it was about. Naturally afterwards, I did some research and got some background on the characters, and the character line-up of the Avengers. I think the dialogue was good, but there wasn't enough. Overall, I think if they made it longer, it would've been better.

I disagree on the Joker point: by examining the Joker, you are in fact examining the exact opposite of Batman, so in the end it was just about giving you a different perspective of the Dark Knight.

Hawkeye's costume is Hawkeye's costume. It's worked for frikkin' 40-odd years in comics, it's fine for movies. Jeez.
