Walking along the remnants of the AVUS Südkurve. When the AVUS - the legendary Berlin racetrack - was connected to the Berliner Ring (the Berlin Ring Road) in 1940, its southern hairpin turn was demolished, with the intent of replacing it with a steep embankment curve similar to its Nordkurve which had been dubbed the "Wall of Death".
While thousands of cubic tons of earth had been heaped up to create the curved form, its construction never progressed as the second world war saw an end to the construction efforts. After the end of the war, the occupying American troops converted it into a shooting range called “Keerans Range”, named after Brig Gen Charles L. Keerans, who died as deputy commander of the 82nd Airborne Division on July 11, 1943 during the Allied landing in Sicily (Operation Husky).
After the American troops pulled out in 1994, the grounds were cleared of any left over munitions, the buildings were torn down and the area renatured.
The huge curved walls are accessible today for those who are curious enough to explore them.
