TESTIMONIALS
‘Started hitting the moves laid out in these courses the very next class...extremely uplifting to have such a quick improvement in my game’ - Houston, TX
‘I’m the only white belt in the academy doing these moves…I’m suddenly competing at a blue belt and above level…thanks Coach Tom’ - LA, California
‘Some of the best strategies you are going to see for control and submission’ - London, UK
‘The detailed way Prof Tom breaks down his moves into the absolute essentials is just next level for me. This is absolute gold‘ - Sydney, Australia
‘Most of the guys at my Academy, have about 60lbs on me, but since purchasing your ‘Kimura Attack system’ and ’14 days’ everything has changed. I feel much more confident, roll better and the guys on the mat have commented on the same. Thanks, Coach Tom’ - Dallas, TX
‘I know you have your names for your courses, but I’ve renamed them the ‘Zero to hero’ courses, I went from getting constantly owned, to now being completely dominant on the mat in no time at all’ - San Diego, California
‘I use the course material heaps, and just recently put it into action at a local comp, walked away with double gold. No one was more surprised than me! - Miami, Florida
‘As a new white belt, these classes have helped me so much, Prof Tom’s technique, the details, and his attitude. I love how Prof. Tom shows the ‘mistakes people make’ and then shows the correct way of doing things. The only one I have ever seen do this’ - New York, New York
Great videos, great instruction. I just watch them for hours…Melbourne, Australia
‘The instructional saved me big time at a recent comp, my opponent was def more experienced, but that was ok, coz I had Prof Tom’s video in my brain. Nailed it and scored gold’ - Colorado, Denver
‘All of it. Everything you show in your awesome videos are now my ‘go to techniques’. Thanks for your vids Prof, Tom’ - Houston, TX
‘You really have to watch every second of the video because Prof, Tom drops these little nuggets of gold throughout the course. And they make ALL the difference. The only one doing this. Keep them coming Professor’ - NY, New York
‘If I could only be taught from one person, Prof Tom would be it. I can’t wait to train in person one day’ - Dallas, TX
‘Went to a recent competition with these videos fresh in my mind. I knew I had an edge and the confidence this gave me was unreal. Got the gold. All submission wins! - LA, California

Yes kesa is great as long as you dont use it on someone who is remotely technical or intelligent

A belated post...I subscribe to the channel because of this video. It has some really good tidbits. I'd like to point out several things The Kesa Gatame you went over is the Catch Wrestling Kesa Gatame. The Judo Kesa Gatame is what I believe is far superior, but less trained to because it's hard to master. Judo Kesa counters the escapes through technique, not strength. The control of Kesa does not come from the head, but from the elbow. The head is the grind. They will never take your back if you control the arm by pulling on the elbow while vicing the neck in tighter when the roll into you. When you perform the wrestling Kesa you are more susceptible to the outer roll escape. If you perform the Judo Kesa with the leg back, when they go to roll and try to capture your hip to pull you over, all you do is turn with them. It's one reason why the back leg is out, so you can turn with them like a big old clock. There is another reason, but that is just one of them. You just keep circling with them and pulling the arm, grinding the neck. It gets tighter. If they decide the hip is worthless to capture and power through the outer roll like a wrestler would, you just let go of the head on the outer turn, post your arm and pull the elbow hard, and it stops the roll and even pulls the opponent in tighter, as you recapture the head. I know a very old and wise Sensei around 80 years and he can hold down very strong and young opponents and he really helped me with understanding the position and all these little tidbits that go into it. He is a huge Kata guy. Kata is where you get these details in Judo. But you might already know all this stuff, nevertheless, I figured I would share. It's a very misunderstood position in BJJ because of the lines are blurred between Catch Wrestling and Judo. Two effective, but completely different styles -- One deal in muscle, and the other deals in technique. -- Small guys can hold big guys down in the position for a reasonable period time if done correctly, before transitioning to anything else.

One detail that will make the armbar or kimura easier when the person is resisting well with the submitting arm is to: 1. grab the wrist 2. slide it down or push arm down the left leg if you are on the left side kesa gatame 3. You then wipe the left leg over the submitting arm It makes a huge difference. You can get several shoulder locks, chest compression, reverse guillotine, arm triangle. The kesa gatame is a very powerful side control when your weight is distributed correctly. One key detail for pressure control is to match your ribs to their ribs and keeping chin down like you are crunching. This will maximize pressure. Grabbing your thigh with your hand that is around the head adds to the pit stop position. Do not let there hips and legs come around your body as they will sweep you backwards.

From the position at [0:54] you can also easily go for an arm triangle. All you have to do is push his right arm between the heads so that its blocking his right carotis artery. Then you just lock your hands and tighten it up till you get the tap. To keep a good base can you do this either sitting like kesa-gatame or kneeling on your right knee while extending your left leg with your left foot posted on the mat.

Hi At Qua. Yes I use a lot of head and arm chokes and tend to finish them differently based on their body types! I will upload my favourite way to finish it from kesa gatame next week! Great choke indeed and one of the favourite moves of my competition team! Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom

I'm a white belt who's just started and who's done judo before and for some reason my instructor gets angry at me whenever he sees me doing this kesa hold. He goes like "you really gotta stop doing this dude" with no possible discussion. He didn't bother explain me why I should stop doing this. It's been super efficient for me against a few colored belts who were taking my back leaving their heads on my ribs. I just had to grab and roll.

Many bjjers are unfamiliar with this hold and despite its effectiveness will frown upon it as you are embarrassing the coloured belts. This sound slike your coaches problem but I would say don't do it to much smaller people than you weight wise. (-: Coach Tom Davey

I believe your coach might be saying this because going for the Kesa Gatame as a judoka might limit/slow your BJJ growth. It's like going for a straight foot lock all the time: yeah it works, but if it's your go-to technique, you will not learn how to pass guard for example. Trust your coach :), but keep the technique in your arsenal.

In BJJ I learned a modified version. Rather than going for under the head go for their under hook. The reason is that if you go for under the head there are a number of escapes from there. I have seen one Judo version that works and that is that use a "floating" hand under the head to be ready to keep your balance during counters. This is a good pin but also be ready for a BJJ guy (that knows the basics) to roll you over and take control of you.

Awesome pin, I did Judo for 20 years where it was standard & now do BJJ & I've tapped nearly everyone in BJJ with these techniques & few more just from Kesa, BBJ guys don't seem to practice it & so get caught. So please stop giving away my secrets. )

I have to thank you again. This is my #1 go to now. Now some of my regular rolling partners defend against it by pushing against my neck with both arms/hands or grabbing my collar...which sets up the arm triangle!

Nice 👍🏼 moves!! I’ve also gotten near side arm triangle chokes from Kesa Gatame when opponent tries to defend with forearm against my neck. We sometimes use the knee or bottom of foot to get the armbar too. I want to use the move against the head, but I bet it might be interpreted as a neck crank which my school doesn’t allow...

Can you pull it off with an under hook instead of the head lock and if so what are the up/down sides?
@TheGrapplingAcademy
@TheGrapplingAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely. The underhook gives you more options but the chest pressure is much less. The head grab position puts more of your eggs into one basket but the effects are much more devastating albeit more risky as well! (-: Coach Tom Davey
