So much detail in the sound of this kind of 'guitar' that you don't hear in the full bodied. It's like a different level of clarity.

I do not like Norbrook Krafts recordings for the most part. That's a comment on the engineering and production, not on the guitarist. Most of Krafts recordings sound distant and tinny.

so tired of people who set up professional video and a high end player who *can't get microphone placement and levels set up properly* FFS guys! I should be sitting here enjoying the experience, not straining my ears and pushing my volume so loud that when outlook tells me I have an email, people 3 blocks away know about it. There's just no excuse at this level of production for these kinds of audio problems.

I'd say mic placement is bloody great. True about the volume though.
@eschelar
@eschelar 10 жыл бұрын
Mathijs Ignoul I included it because I can't hear enough to know whether the mics are sensitive enough for the levels coming out of this guitar to allow for increasing the volume without noise.
@MathijsIgnoul

They probably are. Check out other video's of guitarists recording for Naxos. Almost always super good sound with a similar setup.
@eschelar
@eschelar 10 жыл бұрын
Mathijs Ignoul Yeah, the two stand mics are ok and can be used effectively at those distances - *for the guitar*. And *if* the volume is brought to an appropriate level for the guitar. Compared to other vids that had been on the playlist, it basically sounded like silence with a guy occasionally saying something with a bunch of echo. But the guy talking wasn't talking into a mic, just being picked up incidentally with tons of natural reverb, so it was almost entirely unintelligible. It just sounded like whoever mixed it couldn't give a crap about what was being played, but at the same time wasn't interested in anything that was being said, even though the voice is significantly louder. If they wanted to listen to what the guy was saying, put a mic on the guy talking. How much does it add to the budget to get a couple of Audio Technica lav mics and H1 recorders and stick them on the two people talking in the video so you have a direct source to lay over the primary track? And if you want to hear the guy playing, in between the talking, boost the levels so it's at least somewhat on par with the main source. They actually did that, at 4:40ish, but in a 15 minute clip, for them to get it right once at nearly 5 minutes in, then go back to bad habits is very poor. Again, it makes sense at 7:50ish, but it's just sloppy film making It demonstrates that there wasn't very much thought put into what they were doing. It's beautifully filmed with the camera work and it's a lovely parlour guitar, but shouldn't the primary focus of this be in the audio work? Also, to my ear, that guitar isn't quite loud enough for that distance, allowing the room to be a bit too strong. I'd probably try to get them in about 15-30cm closer. Still lots of flavor from the room, but the instrument wouldn't feel so weak. But that's just my preference.

Agreed with having a few mics for the guys talking. Also, listen to some Marcin Dylla recordings for Naxos. Doesn't sound weak at all, though it was kindof the same setup (and same church).
