The Railway and Locomotive Historical Society of Sacramento has been collecting locomotives and railroad equipment since 1930 and this is the backbone of the California State Railroad Museum.
But most of the collection is stored and restored in the old Southern Pacific Shops near the museum. The back shop is NEVER open to the public, but as one of the members of the historical society was also involved in the National Narrow Gauge Convention, a few participants in the convention were able to see the back shop and collection.
The museum staff NEVER allows people of groups to get in so PLEASE DO NOT ASK. We were told NOT to video the collection, and not to share any photos on the channel, and we are not showing you those images. What we are using here are photos from others and other web sites already available online. The reason they do not want photos on social media is simply because of their zero access policy. Nuff said.
HOWEVER, the back shop will be open in the future as a public part of the museum, to be called the Museum of Railroad Technologies. The entire old CP and SP shop area is being developed into a wonderfull mixed-use urban center. Construction is underway now, and we show that as well as future plans!

Thank you from every rail fan in the world for your excellent coverage of the old Sacramento shops. This project has been secreted away from the public eyes for decades. And now, we can see what has been done and what needs to be done to finish this world class railroad extravaganza.

What a wealth of railroad history. As money comes in more of these artifacts can see completion. I love all these old engines. My heart leapt with the Southern Pacific X6051. These old diesels have always been a favorite. I remember climbing the bridge girders of the Rock Island line behind our house and watching the F7s' fly threw. Young and crazy.

One of my uncles was a mechanic for Penn Central. And he wants got me into an F unit to go for a little ride through the yards. It was intensely scary dark smelly and hot. And it was totally amazing. We rode in back with the prime mover and the electrics.

My first visit to the California Railroad Museum was in 1982, in 4th grade & my favorite display was the hobo sitting by a campfire. You’d pick up one of three heavy black phones and he’d tell a story about hoboing in the Depression Era. The museum moved him to a boxcar but he sat, pinched stogie in hand, next to his campfire for 20 years. He was keeping vigil in the hobo jungle as recently as 2004. I’ve searched high n low online for a picture of that vignette.

Had the opportunity to visit those shops some years ago with a friend working on some equipment there. I had free rein to wander at my leisure for several hours while he was busy. Fascinating place filled with all sorts of really spectacular artifacts and interesting industrial architecture. Glad Sacto and CA are finally getting their act together and preserving these historical treasures instead of tearing them down to build yet another sports arena, as was discussed in the past. The concept drawings look awesome.

FYI as a former Docent at the CSRR WE used the 4466 for a great many years. She is coal fired and hand fed. A 1929 Baldwin we would burn an average of 1 ton of coal per day. My wife was a fireman and I was a conductor. The reason it had to be retired was that it had so may miles and hours on it that it is basically shot. It will need re-tubed due to its age. The Granite Rock #10 should have come out of the shops sooner but sadly the person that was in charge of taking it apart actually forgot how to put it back together and he was also overwhelmed by the amount of equipment there was to maintain. Most of the Docents that worked in the shops are also volunteers but we also have a fair amount of railroad experience as well as how to use the heavy equipment. All equipment that you see on display IS functional as we took the time to competently restore every square inch. Sadly though there is equipment that will never be seen again. At one time we did have an example of every single SF engine that was ever built. They were stored outside behind the shops. There came a time when we were finally going to get them restored and actually start using some of them. Sadly though when we went to start retrieving them out of the yard we discovered that thief's had gotten to them (though there was security from SP is was much less than perfect to say the least) The thieves had removed every piece of copper in every engine EVEN THE HUGE RADIATORS!!! (we never did figure out how the hell they got them out of the engines and moved to the salvage yard as it is not like a few bolts and you remove your car radiator these things weighed hundreds of pounds each! ) And the local salvage yard bought them (without even questioning where they came from or so they claimed to the City of Sacramento Police and the SP police) and scrapped the metal. It was such a huge scandal with all of us having to account for our whereabouts and contact with the known thieves (yes they were finally caught but by then it was to late) that Santa Fe was furious since we guaranteed the safety of the equipment that they came and took it all back. There was so much wonderful units we could have built an entire museum around all of it alone. Also it should be noted that in the early days of the SP (the spill and pollute as we called them) they would run out of scrap yards to take the equipment and would actually just bury it in the yards. For anyone that wondered why it took so long to clean up the SP yard so they could build on it ---well it was because so many engines were buried it took years to find all the locations and clean up the ground from metals and chemicals (part of the reason we used to call the SP lines the Spill and Pollute), So that is a short history of the SP rail yards and what went on and yes we did all the work in house none of it is ever farmed out. Hope that answers some questions, David Vincent former Docent for the CSRR

Wow that is quite the history thank you! I’ve heard so many stories and legends and rumors around the shops going clear back to the 1990s! And there’s been this ongoing talk forever about building the second museum. But there was a lot of mention about not even trying to build with the location of the old shops because of environmental issues and to start all over at the other end of the railroad down the river! Anyway it’s nice to see the locomotive shops finally being restored and re-purposed!!

The JW BOWKER was bought and used as a switcher. The CP HUNTINGTON No. 1(4) a 4-2-4 was too light, had too little tractive effort, to pull cars over the mountains so was relegated to local work around Sacramento and inspection work.

The CP Huntington was used to transport photographer Carleton E. Watkins on many of his photographic expeditions. The train consisted of a flat car to carry the photographic wagon, and a sleeping car. He and Huntington came to California together. Watkins originally transported goods from Huntington's store in Sacramento to the mining districts, where he took orders for future delivery. He began taking photos of the miners, eventually mines, railroads and scenic views. www.carletonwatkins.org/getviewbyid.php?id=1004858 www.carletonwatkins.org/getviewbyid.php?id=1004625 www.carletonwatkins.org/getviewbyid.php?id=1005267

My dad fought the development of Fort Union, Utah. The big developers hounded an old couple in their 90s for years and finally got what they wanted after the husband died. They tore down the only remaining pioneer home and tore out the foundation of the fort. We were trying to turn it into a park but lost in the end. The developer built a recreation of the old house out of cinder blocks in the parking lot. The original site is now a suit store and Walmart, like we need more of those. History will be lost if enough people don't fight for it.

I did the same thing from the viaduct in Salt Lake City as a kid. According to my mom I would exclaim trains trains trains! The passenger station below us is still there but there are no tracks going to it. Most of what was down there is gone sadly. In the far far back of my mind I remember a 2 foot gauge set of tracks going through the street between two of the industrial shops. While exploring the round house in Evanston Wyoming we stumbled into that exact same set up and boy was that thrilling!

As much as people go on about the "secret collection" hidden away in there, honestly I just wanna go there to see the SP shops themselves, this has to be one of the largest locomotive facilities left in North America, it dwarves just about every surviving engine shop in other collections, with just a few very notable exceptions like the PRR's Altoona works. Not only is it huge but it's incredible just how much of the facility is left... For all intents and purposes it's the same facility today as it was when SP's 4-8-8-2s and 2-10-2s called it home. It may just be the single most complete steam era major locomotive backshop complex left, even if some other shops are bigger or more famous many have had serious work done since the steam era, UP's Cheyenne shops for example weren't even nearly this big and they're basically completely gone except for a tiny fragment used by the steam program. it's quite literally a shadow of it's former self(like as in you can still see the old foundations where the rest of it used to be) Thank you guys for sharing your experiences and knowledge exploring this amazing and historic facility... Unfortunate you couldn't share photos, especially considering now I wanna see it even MORE knowing you CAN'T show me. This has to be the ultimate place for screwing around west of the Mississippi.

StressLess Camping hi! Yes, not the first time someone has said no video. No posting. Why? The neon sign museum in Las Vegas same exact thing. What are they afraid we will send business their way? The homes that are operated as museums in Carson City and Virginia City same rule. Again what are they afraid of people coming to see their museum? The hole in the rock house in southern Utah. We did a fun show on that I don’t think we’ve used it yet but we have a fun show on that but they wouldn’t let us take any pictures inside the house. Why? OK admittedly the guys weird hobby of taxidermy on road killed horses was pretty weird, but they have it on display, so they must not be all that ashamed of it. So why not let people see it online? Now the guy with the collection of tanks we understand. He just doesn’t want a lot of people calling him wanting to see his tank collection. So we didn’t use his real name and he didn’t seem to be upset about that, but initially he said don’t post anything online. We are KZfaq channel, posting online is what we do! We didn’t just show up to have lunch. Anyway in the end we got to show off his tanks nobody knew who he was or where he is at his phone never rang. So score!! Anyway I thought this would be sort of a fun work around!

I actually got to visit the california state railroad museum back in April 2014 when i was visiting my cousin who recently moved there in late 2013. I remember that day i was too excited and threw up because of all the excitement. Don't judge me I've my behavior has changed completely the last few years and no longer act like my dumb 12 year old self. Anyway i actually didn't know this til a few months ago but after looking at some photos from my visit there were 3 steam locomotives in them i had no idea i saw. I was 12 years old my memory of that isnt that great. Anyway the locomotives were southern pacific 2467, union pacifc 4466 which was in a different position than where it was during this video was recorded and cab forward 4294 that i did remember seeing but nearly forgot i saw it but glad i did and even got to go inside its cab as well. Hopefully I'll make another visit someday and i can see granite rock 10 since during my visit it was going through an overhaul that was a year away from completion and i hope i can see it operating with my own eyes since Im planning on seeing 4014 when its in California this week. I originally was planning on chasing it for the excursion it'll be doing but the route it's going on is the same route that my family takes to palm springs where my mom's family lives and since my dad won't be able to be with me since he'll be on his way to baltimore, Maryland for a business trip wnd and that my mom thinks that we shouldn't drive 2 hours to chase it i had to think of another plan and i couldn't buy a ticket either since most were too expensive and the lowest was 350 and that i didn't have that much money in my wallet. But i do plan on seeing it when its on display this Friday but unfortunately the only info i could find for that day's display location is at the greater los Angeles area and i have no idea where the hell that is. But I'm crossing my fingers and have hope I'll get a chance to see 4014 myself and maybe if I'm lucky run into ed dickens. I'm pretty sure the part with ed dickens proably might happen but i still hope i can see 4014 when its in California. Hopefully both of theses things will happen but for now all i can do is wait

Awesome video! I really enjoy your trips and this one was exceptional! No one has really covered the western leg of the intercontinental railway. As an easterner, the big elephant in the room that everyone coos over is the Union Pacific. They get the bragging rights that they are the biggest and almost oldest railroad in our nation. Thankfully, that title I believe goes to CSX aka the Chessy System aka the C&O aka the B&O or Baltimore and Ohio railroad. An interesting side note to that is it all came into existence when Andrew Jackson was the POTUS and he left office after his second term riding out on the new railroad. In 1828 he rode to Washington on horseback. No one has covered the route of the Western Pacific, or where it started by who it was started? You put an interesting spin on how the Historical Society early on sought to preserve history as opposed to tearing down and burying it. There are some scary times moving all of that rock, working long days, dodging accidents. I have an image from an old book that shows how they made those cuts across mountains that they didn't tunnel though. They would cut in a V shape and they hung baskets over the sides of the cliff with people(Chinese-Americans) with hammer and chisel they would bust it away or make holes for Dynamite or Nitroglycerin for a big boom! Do you think some of those times they might premature explosion? That would be scary. I hope you get to feeling better with your hip. If it's any consolation the lead singer for KISS Paul Stanley has had several hip replacements. Think about 47 years in stack heeled shoes night after night is going to do a number on your joints. I don't have the hips going yet, My downfall is my knees. The left knee is bone on bone with no cartilage and it's forcing me to shift my weight to the right knee causing it to wear down as well. Again I hope you get to feeling better you're a tough wolfman on a stick for walking up the trail to the tunnels at the top of the summit that was awesome.

Hi mike! Yup. Firs the left hip. Next the left knee which is in worse shape than the hip. But not as debilitating. Then they tell me in about four years the right hip. The upside is they say my right knee is perfect. One out of four. that really sucks. Yea the guys in the baskets had nitroglycerin. Dynamite was still years away. They also tried black powder which in some cases worked but usually not. And sure enough many of these guys lost their lives to premature explosions or failure or ropes and safety equipment. And no one kept track of who or how many. The other Chinese workers took care of the bodies. And most ended up back in China. Their friends would burry them then move the bones from camp to camp and ultimately home to China. And we love the B and O. Now that’s some history. And what a museum

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but, ATSF 1010 is a real candidate for an operational restoration. Despite it's outwardly rough looks, it's been well preserved. I was talking talking with one of the volunteers and he said you could basically pump it with compressed air and run it the shops on it's own power. Time will tell.

They have a limited budget at the Nile's railway and what actually happened was when they got that locomotive paid a substantial amount of money there was a fund raiser actually held and the amount was not even a drop in the bucket as to the several million dollars was going to take to restore the locomotive for active service and it was one of a handful that they purchased for restoration and at that point the decision was made that funding was needed and it wasn't something they could do in the time Allotted so it was then donated to the state railroad museum

I figured it would be something like that. I know if it was turned over to a restoration facility, for example in Pennsylvania, it would probably cost somewhere in the area of $3 million to make it perfect. Pretty big chunk of change.

Lots of history in the shops. I saw the shops back in 1977. Long story someday. I saw The Yerrington(?)when she was at Rio Vista. I Some of the issues are museums don't want people to see stuff that look like eyesores. It is very hard to think of something worth saving after its been sitting outside in the elements for 50 or 60 years. There maybe other issues involved with some of the collection as well. It good to see an F40 in a museum collection. Did you remember AHM made an HO model of the JW Bowker? One of the issues that the State Museum had to deal with, and now the developer of the site is environmental. The old SP shops had considerable ground contamination. If I remember correctly I think the museum found a developer who would do the environmental remediation in exchange for being able to redevelop the rest of the site. Also did anyone see or hear about the locomotives found off New Jersey underwater a few years ago? They kind of had the same dimensions as the 4-2-0(at least that is what came to mind) Thx again

The backshops at Sacramento were closed as Union Pacific Railroad took over. The property was slated for development for commerce and housing. The resulting EPA was a DISASTER. Union Pacific was faced with 2 huge projected profit driven properties. The Bayshore yard in South San Francisco proved to be as much as a nightmare as Sacramento. Union Pacific subsequently ended up donating both properties in the face of not just HUGE clean up costs to go foreward with the construction plans but the State of California in essence told U P they HAD to clean it up whether or not they went ahead with ATTEMPTED construction costs. Hence the DONATIONS of properties.....for which I for one am happy with!! OLE' Uncle Pete lost that one!!!!

Being from somewhere outside California you're not aware of the regulations they placed on the state railroad museum The amount of money required to ship and store all of these vintage steam engines and everything it had they have accumulated it's been piling up and the insurance required by the state has been astronomical and only recently did they finally acquire the funding necessary Q guarantee the insurer of so that they can open up the old facility building that's basically been converted into a big storage facility and it's taken quite a bit of years actually to achieve this they are a non profit and there has been a big push to display everything if they have and this is the 1st time I think that they will actually finally be able to accomplish that
