Fun fact: the Chiquita Banana company tried to assassinate my Abuelo when he advocated for worker's unionization and rights in Honduras during the 20th century! So not only did they kill leaders, they didn't hesitate to kill anyone who even considered talking back! My Abuelo eventually immigrated to the US for asylum, and continued to advocate for unionization where they couldn't kill him as easily, haha.

In Colombia, there's a similar story. In 1928, workers of the banana plantations were protesting against the terrible working conditions. After weeks with no agreement due to the United Fruit Company refusing to negotiate, the conservative Colombian government sent the army to kill the protesting workers. They were compelled to work in the company's interests because they didn't want them to cut off the Colombian banana trade from major powers. This is now known as "La masacre de las bananeras" or the Banana Massacre. This is even referenced in One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. Just like during the Cold War, US officials in Colombia and United Fruit Co. representatives portrayed them as communist in telegrams sent to then Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg

This sort of stuff is why megacorporations are actually really horrifying, and also why I reckon that the seperation between corporation and state should be about as important as the seperation of church and state... oh wait, i forgot; the latter is simply a broader version of the former lol

I had to scroll for a good bit before I found a freedom oriented mindset. I 100% agree we need separation between state and market. The state has become religion for so many people. I also agree with the separation of church and state, and I’m actually upset that this other person that replied to your comment won’t let me ask why (specifically) we don’t separate church and state in the US anymore…but I guess the bot account is being used elsewhere. We have an election coming after all.

Government shouldnt have access to money They charge us anyway. . . . When a new road goes in, your taxes climb that year to pay for it. . . . But the government also needed to print extra money for its self, after it spent the money it said it would cost already. . . . Is the debt just the money you thought you were personally owed?
@thewanderingmistnull2451
@thewanderingmistnull2451 Жыл бұрын
Separation of church and state isn't what you think it is. It's "the government stays out of the church", not "church stays out of government". The Puritans left England because the government was in charge of the church and basically using it as an extra source of income.

In Honduras, all of these companies still exist. Some women who work there even become sterile after a year working due to the strong chemicals they use. Average wage in those companies is about $820 a month for about 80 hours a week, i.e. 400 hours a week. You can't use your phone, you have 20 minutes a day to eat and use the bathroom. You can't eat the bananas. And if you're a women, you're pretty much obligated to have sex with your boss if you want to keep your job. Unfortunately those are the places with the highest wages in those zones

Doesn’t have much to do with anything but I had just read about Smedley yesterday. Apparently he was hired by all these businesses to overthrow FDR in the 1930s and help them install a dictatorship instead. He told the president instead. The coup was prevented and no one was prosecuted. Butler hated his life, denounced capitalism and labeled himself a “racketeer for capitalism” for decades. Roosevelt himself was viewed as a Communist by many of these businessmen. Butler was a Roosevelt supporter though and these businesses were idiots for trying to hire HIM of all people to lead their attempted Coup. The entire thing was ridiculous if not a little scary.
