On Wednesday 21st August 2019, The Band and Bugles of the Rifles performed a full Sounding Retreat to members of the headquarters staff RMSM and the students of the 2019 Corps of Army Music Summer Academy . The band were supporting the week long course and took the opportunity to showcase their marching display under the direction of their Bandmaster and Bugle Major.

I think my badge says it all, the finest bands in the world were the Light Division made up of us, the RGJ and the other lot, the LI. I was not a bandsman though I did spend a week with 1 RGJ's band in Hong Kong following a conversation with WO1 BM David Little, some old 1 RGJ bandmen might remember me banging away on the cymbols !! So pleased to see that the Rifles adopted the colours, the marching speed and music of the od Lt Div. Keep going guys until the next round of cuts.

Fantastic, my great great grandfather was Bandmaster for 2nd Battalion KSLI before moving to the Royal Irish (Ulster) Rifles.

I am glad I can bring you some of the best moments of military music in the U.K. over the last few years and you’ve been able to enjoy them, hopefully you’ll get to experience them live and in person someday, it’ll create some special memories I’m sure!!

They are pretty good but not a patch on the light division band which was before the rifles were formed that dominated army music from the late 70s through to the mid 90s. Cuts to army music numbers is mainly to blame and not the rifles fault. Still good to hear though

I served in the 3rd battalion Royal Green Jackets band for 9 years from 1975 to 1984 and loved every moment and the bandmaster was Mr John Seddon any former band members please reply.

So many questions. I thought the Rifles didn't slow march? What do the larger plumes signify? Senior Warrant Officers? How cool would it be to live in one of those houses across the road!?

Larger plumes designate rank, Bugle Major , Band Sgt Major, Band Master & DOM.

Coldstreamer18 The opening March - called, I think, Geordie - features the tunes Blaydon Races and Keep Your Feet Still Geordie Lad. A fine tribute to one of the constituent former regiments, The Durham Light Infantry, but I am biased being a former Dirty Little Imp (geddit?)

Hi Scott, that’s a great question! The Rifles motto is ‘Swift and Bold’ and they are part of the Light Infantry, so if you know anything about them you would probably have a good idea. I’ve found this article that explains very well about the differences in marching tempo’s for different bands and regiments of the British Army. The light infantry had to move quickly around the battlefield hence the 140 steps a minute rather than the standard 120 of the regular infantry.

Three thumbs down. Give ya heed a wobble... can't touch the band & bugles they're mint .... Father was a bugler DLI & 3LI huge part of my life.. still love the sounds and spectacle...
