My dad was from Dun Leoghaire and he would tell me all the wondrous tales when I was a child. A lot of my songs have been influenced by what he told me. When I was living in Cornwall and he was looking after his brother my uncle Kevin in Birmingham I had a strong dream/vision of a lady mewling like a cat crying and the next day he phoned saying uncle Kevin was gone.

My mother has heard her twice on both occasions her granddad and neighbour died that same night. She has also seen the woman in white with long silver hair. My grandfather lived in an isolated cottage up in the mountains in the West of Ireland. He had so many stories of ghostly encounters and the supernatural world, I wish I had written them down before he died.

My Mother grew up in rural Ireland and believe me she is not one to be interested in the supernatural or anything like that and she said she heard the Ban si when she was a teen and u believe her because she never speaks of things like that. She said it was the most chilling, inhuman, screeching, howl she has ever hard. Absolutely terrifying that she said she'l never forget it. she heard pass her window and continue on and the next day in Mass a neighbor dropped dead! love being irish!!!

Banshees or Beansidhe. Back in 1987 or 1988 I was walking down the road at night with two Mikes....Mike Hamlin and Mike Reed. We hadn't gone too far down the road when up at the top of the trees we heard this blood curdling cry. It warbled in a owl-like way for a few seconds and then morphed into a female voice screaming "MIKE!" I stood there in amazement, but when I turned around both Mikes were gone! I was buzzing with excitement but realized I was alone in the dark on the side of Doyal rd....so I finally ran back to the house. When I got there both mikes were pacing around the front yard saying "What the fuck was that?" We all agreed it had to be a Banshee. But they say if a Banshee calls your name you will die soon. Well I'm happy to report both Mikes are still alive and well today. So what did it mean? One Mike was threatened by a fellow student who got him alone and said something creepy like "I have a gun under my seat." and "Would anyone miss you if you just never came home?" Which is creepy...but he didn't do anything. So I'm not sure if Mike was in danger or not? But maybe it was a warning? The other Mike would jump on the hood of a friends moving car (she didn't know) and when she put on the breaks he went surfing face first in the gravel. He came pretty close to death that night...but still lived. So maybe the Banshee doesn't always warn of certain death? After these incidents I had gone alone in my grandma's forest at night and cast a magick circle. After I got the circle of protection up I sat and stared into the candle light. Right as I began to break the circle at the end of the ritual....a singing/ crying female voice started singing in a language that I didn't understand. I was so terrified by the sound that I could barely move. And I noticed that my faithful dog (who always stayed close) had refused to follow me into the woods this time. After this singing/ crying had stopped I quickly picked up my ritual items and headed out of the woods. There at the corner of the woods was my dog "Bear" sitting patiently for me to leave the woods. I felt so much better to see him and get close to him. But as I approached he began to cry and back away from me. I noticed he was looking above my head. I looked up and seen nothing. Could the dog see something I couldn't? Needless to say I ran home at this point. It wasn't long after this incident my uncle Tivis died in Tennessee.

My sister saw an apparition which said my name and spooked her pretty bad. Days later a truck almost hit me while crossing the road. 2 months later, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had an operation to remove it. 3 days later I was discharged but I had unknowingly formed a hematoma, something that happens in only 1% of cases, something told me to go to hospital and not leave until they saw me that night.. luckily for me it was found in time. I know I would of died and suffocated in my sleep, if it wasn’t for my intuition compelling me not to ignore it.

There is a similar concept in the Spanish speaking world. La Llorona, about which there is a very haunting song. In some American Indian cultures, the owl is a messenger of death. Twice in my life, my house has been literally filled by the sound of hooting. Both times, someone I knew, close to me had died.

Last January I dreamt I was in the shed at my homeplace looking for coffin boards, other dreams of ancestors around the same time, I had no doubt, having these dreams of ancestors only means some relative is going to be called. In March, at my job, a crow walked into the workshop, passed my manager and came as far as me, it nodded then turned around and walked out. I thanked it. Anyway, my sister got diagnosed last month and cancer is spread, she doesn't have long. Funny thing is, my mam has these dreams the same night I do, they're different but it's ancestors in hers too. I'll check out the song, I was only reading about La Llorna last week, had not come across her before then.
