ELP's arrangement of Bela Bartok's 'Allegro Barbaro'. We wanted to preserve Bartok's original vision, through Laszlo's performance on the concert grand piano.
Mihaly Tunkli (Misi) (Hammond organ) / mokusmisi (Hungary)
Laszlo Endl (Steinberg Symphonic Orchestra) / endllaci (Hungary)
Balint Holubecz (Bass guitar) / rottenborough80 (Hungary)

Exactly right! Good ear. We wanted to pay tribute to ELP, but also to the original composer Bartok. That's why we substituted the middle section--to keep it true to its roots. So the format is: ELP--Bartok--ELP.

What a joy to see and hear this, and played with such professionalism and passion. I still remember the life-changing moment (probably not an exaggeration) when I began listening to a borrowed C120 tape containing the first three ELP albums; I was blown away. Your recording also highlighted aspects of the piece that I'd not noticed before. Many thanks.
@17drums
@17drums 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Chris, for your generous comments! Hearing ELP for the first time was also a life-changing moment for me. 'Tank' was the song that inspired me to be a drummer. I was already into classical music, so discovering ELP and their synthesis of classical and rock music, was the perfect fit for me. Seeing their concerts in the 70's (including with the orchestra) are some of my favorite life-memories. It was a magical time for me. Keeping that music alive and, hopefully, exposing it to younger audiences in this day and age of the wannabe singers, is why we do these collaborations. Thanks for watching. Dave
@chrisammann4041
@chrisammann4041 2 жыл бұрын
Dave, I well understand how Tank would inspire you to be a drummer - it's way up in my list of best ELP tracks and can air-drum it with the best of them! It is a drumming tour-de-force and 50 years on is just as astonishing. For me there are two key moments in the piece (moments I eagerly anticipate): the first at 3:47 when the 'acoustic space' seems to change along with the dominant pitch (a percussive key change?) and the second at 4:05 where the stereo phasing occurs. I would love to hear your collaborative band tackle this.
@chrisammann4041
@chrisammann4041 2 жыл бұрын
Dave, I've just found your version of Tank, and what an amazing job! Once again, it's so great to be able to look over your shoulder to find out how the solo was put together - a bit like reading the analysis of a poem. Do you change kits for the solo part?
@17drums
@17drums 2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisammann4041 Thanks, Chris. Originally, I was just going to play along with the album during the solo, on my big kit. But I then felt that would be cheating and defeating the whole point of trying to tackle the difficulty of this piece. So I recorded the solo separately on the smaller kit. I was hoping also that we might do a collaborative cover of the song eventually, and I could just re-use the solo for that effort. But we had other ELP projects in the works.

Thanks, Earl! I agree that the 70's were the best decade for this type of classical art-rock. I always hoped that music was cyclical, and that it would become popular again. I started watching them just from being a fan of Rachel, but I want to check them all out and I see you have done a whole load of them where she is not involved; but regardless, this is gonna keep me entertained for a long time. the visual settings are really cool, the instruments, the clothes. The massive gong strike note did not make it to the final video, but no biggie .... you are also quite the funny man (Justin Bieber, laughing my ass off :D :D :D ) ... I'm neglecting to practice in favor of watching all the great youtube videos, but, what the heck, whatever turns you on now may not be the same that used to. Keep up the great work !!! :):)

+Victor Coral Thanks, Victor! This is the next best thing to live performance. Plus, it has all the benefits of not having to move equipment, stay up late, (zzzzzzzz), or deal with drunks puking on the stage! The massive gong strike I had to do on my china cymbal, (with a gong overdub), since I sold my gong as there was no room for it anymore.

ELP's rendition of Allegro Barbaro is one of the very few cases where I prfer the rock arrangement over the original. Lovely rendition, especially the smoky organ sound, and it's much clearer here how much Greg Lake's distorted bass parts add to the arrangement.

I had never heard of Bartok when I first heard this rendition by ELP. Naturally, I prefer it over the original by virtue of introduction to it. However, since a lot of people don't realize it's a classical piece in origin, and not just electronic rock, we thought we'd pay homage to it's creator also. Thanks for watching.

You guys are amazing , and really do these ELP pieces justice, I read that you have never actually met in person which makes it even more amazing, We really need an ELP tribute band , now that both Keith and ELP are no longer with us

Thanks, Gary! Yeah, it's sad that we're getting to the point in our lives where our heroes are dying out. Losing both Keith and Greg this year really was a blow to progressive rock. Keeping them alive through their music is the best that we can hope to do.

This is a great collaboration! I really like how the Bartok played by Lazlo is different than Emerson (or, maybe how Emerson's arrangement is different than Bartok's original arrangement). Great idea to collaborate. Balint looks like he really likes playing this as well :)

Thanks! We wanted to acknowledge that Bartok basically wrote the core of this piece, which ELP then worked into an electronic prog version.
