Just a quick reminder or note. Barbie herself is an actress and ‘the twelve dancing princesses’, ‘princess and the pauper’ or any other movies she isn’t named ‘Barbie’ are movies she plays in. Then there are Barbie movies like ‘A fashion Fairytale’ or ‘A perfect Christmas’ are about her private life as Barbie. ‘The Barbie diaries’ counts to this as well.

The Barbie diaries was my favorite thing to watch as a kid. I used to run home after school everyday to rewatch it. I swear it looked better on my TV in the early 2000s. @inkynewt

To be fair to the animators (not the studios tho) the riggers+other artists on these movies were probably paid peanuts and put on insane crunch for a project they may not have been super passionate about. Alex is animating stuff he cares about and probably does work on crunch due to algorithm but has a lot more freedom in his schedule+balancing. Almost like happy animators in good environments make better art. (that sarcasm isn't at you, it's at the industry)

The fact that Alex is mostly right about the hair animation bit, the hair was the reason they hired that animation studio, bc In most of the other Barbie movies(esp at the time) the hair did not move at all. context, Mattel was trying to compete w/ bratz and its series, which was made by a different animation company. So Mattel hired them for the Barbie diaries and made it similar to bratz. So that's why the hair is animated like that.

Another Barbie move that really departs from the Barbie formula is the MyScene film Jammin in Jamaica. It technically stars Barbie but the frankly large cast of side characters have a prominent role in the film. It’s so chaotic, drama fueled, has some incredible original songs. Plus it’s more “mature” since it comes from the MyScene franchise. It’s also in 2D so it’s a different style

I will say that even though the animation is pretty atrocious, it somehow feels more alive than the other barbie movies. the shots are also genuinely creative to the point where I can practically see the storyboards they made for this movie. I would honestly say this one is my favorite.

I think what definitely helps is the voice acting. I forgot who plays Barbie usually, but her voice is iconic as hell for the animated films. And Racquelle’s VA is also fairly prominent since she usually plays the mean girl (ex: Nori, at first a mean girl anyways).

The animation is Mo-Cap, like in Polar Express, but with no money for some that cots big bucks, so it’s such a bland look with realistic moments. But I think the reason why they seems alive, is because this was that Mattel VS Bratz era, so they were trying to copy them until they could get the rights (despite they had no reason to have them, other than the guy who created them worked for Mattel when he made them, but never pitched them). The cutaways and the hair animation was obviously inspired by Bratz and while Bratz has iffy animation as well, you can’t say they aren’t expressive and alive compared to say like one of the early Barbie films. It’s just very obvious it was that time they wanted to get money like Bratz, which is ironic, since Barbie pretty much has been stealing from other dolls since day one.

fun fact: this barbie movie is the only barbie movie that used rotoscoping/motion capture primarily for its animation. and funny enough i actually weirdly kind of like the look of this movie than other barbie movies. im not saying its better, but i do feel like its sort of like a fever dream feeling.
@patroka

Oh, rotoscoping, huh? That makes sense, since my first impression of the animation was that it reminded me of Aku no Hana, which was an anime infamous for its heavy use of rotoscoping. I didn’t really know you could rotoscope in 3D, though I can see how you could
