I've been visiting this 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona every year since 2011. It has never moved in that time. But the world around it sure has changed. Below are links to much information on the car.

Back in '97 when i first moved to AR there was a black '69 Firebird in some guys backyard. I saw him cutting his lawn and asked if he would sell it? NO! "I got it." One day i'll fix it up. Then he put a tarp over it. In 2005 i begged him to sell it to me as it deteriorated in his yard. Nope! You gotta see the car now. It's so rusted the front fenders are falling off and the whole car is covered in cancer and it appears he put it up on tree stumps too late so the body looks bent now. Yup, you got it!

That is too bad. But keep on the guy, might not be a good restoration project, but might be good for parts.

About a year ago, near my highschool, I saw a white 68 Firebird under a tree. Base model, but clean. I had just finished up my mustang project, so I figured I ask him how much he would sell it for. A very old man answered the door with a shotgun. I didn't go back to that place for obvious reasons. About 6ish months later, I'm talking about it to a friend in my class, and this kid swings around in front of me. "That was my grandpas old car. He passed away about a month ago. Can you believe someone bought it from me for 600$? Suckers! " I immediately offered him 1500$ (which was maybe a tenth of what the a 4th of what the car was worth). It was to late. They picked it up earlier that day. Saw it on craigslist for 10000$. Sold within a week.

Wow, that's an amazing story Jerry. I knew a guy who lucked on to a '55 Nomad; he was looking for one but most sellers wanted $20K or more. Some old guy died and a few weeks later his wife put the old wagon out for sale on the law. $3,000. My buddy just drove by and saw it and he got it. Original condition with the 283 and 50K miles on it. It was also garage kept. White with blue interior. He's been offered $40K for it but it's not for sale.

WHY!?!?!?!? Owner: "I have potentially a $150000+ car at home" Person 2: "Nice! What are you doing with it mate?" Owner: "Just letting it sit out in the weather while it slowly becomes a worthless pile of rust." Person 2: "I don't want to live on this planet anymore."

my uncle drove a 69 Hemi Charger Daytona 4 Speed to my Grandpa's funeral, from California to Chicago in 1972, and I will never forget sitting in the front seat with him as a 10 year old kid, and watching him sidestep the accelerator on the Frontage Road next to the freeway in front of the funeral home roasting the tires and speed Shifting the 4 speed as if he was trying to crush the gearbox... it was some of the most amazing noise and acceleration I've ever felt and it made me a Mopar Man forever and it crushes me, absolutely crushes me, to see the exact same kind of car that I remember as being the monster that it was, so neglected.

Same thing has happened to me. I discovered a 69 Roadrunner sitting in a garage amongst mudd, plants, bushes and other trinkets here in Mexico. Those cars were never originally sold here, so seeing them here is pretty rare. I've insisted about 3 or 4 times in a two-month period and they just won't sell. They come up with all these crazy excuses. The car is in pretty good shape, just the usual rust rot spots here and there. Gosh. Why do people do this to us car lovers? Why do they keep on refusing to sell something they just don't care for?

It sounds like you're dealing with a group of people with limited intelligence and comprehension. The idea being that once the car is too far gone, it's not worth anything. As it sits now, it will take thousands of man hours and dollars to restore properly... Such a shame to see history destroyed by stupid.

Unfortunately this has happened to a lot of them over the years. Back in the 70s I witnessed 2 Hemi cars in junk yards get parted out and years later when I went back down to retrieve them, found they were crushed. Back in the day people didn't worry about vehicles that had been wrecked. Both of the cars I mentioned would be prime candidates for a restore today even if they'd hadn't came from the factory with a Hemi in them. The sad part is one was a convertible and the other one was a aluminum front end drag car. of course the engines were gone. I saved quite a few Mopars in my years in the game. I no longer chase them down. found a nice body that I wanted and stayed with that. Props to the people though that are taking some pretty rough chassis and restoring them

The very first Daytona 500 was basically a hand build and was on display at the 69/70 New York worlds fair. After the fair was over the car was sold to a Dodge dealer, who's name was drawn from a lottery that had all Dodge dealers in North America in it. The car was a 440 automatic with red with white stripes. The very unusual feature of the vehicle is that it was built from a Charger SE that had more luxury options than the final production versions. This car still exists.

I became friends with a farmer probably about 6 months ago, she was telling me about this one circus dodge she had that her dad drove her around in the 70s, saying it had a factory wing as tall as the car itself. I asked if I could see the and after a week of waiting I went to this field with a whole bunch of other gems and there it was. A blue and black 69 dodge Daytona. After a couple weekends worth of labor I am currently having it and a 67 4 door hardtop impala towed to my house. Problem is with hurricane Florence, it is expected to have a trees fall. I am really stressing because I still need them towed to my place and they’ll be sitting out in the storm. Once they arrive I’ll be making videos on the full restoration

Auto Archaeology They wont be able to preserve the car that much longer if it stays outside. Especially in Wisconsin. Im not American, but as far as I know its 'above' Chicago? In that case the winters must be very tough and wont become well for a car standing outside all day long. I dont know how well you and the owners family get along or if they are charging too much money for the car, but I would get that thing somewhere dry 'n cosy ASAP. It would be sad to loose such a beauty to the nature. Best of luck getting it soon :)

It was Dodges first successor. The lost one race after another and one day they teamed up with some chrysler missile scientists to develop a aerodynamic car which unintentionally hit the 200 mp/h mark. Later on they won like 80% of a seasons races and had to build 500 to keep up with the daytona terms. So, long story short, they won a lotta races but not the first one ;)

I didn't know story behind these cars because when it came out I didn't have time to research how it was tied to the NASCAR circuit for the Daytona races . I saw a couple of them on the street and didn't know that they could hit 200 mph on the track . It seemed like a cartoon car for the guy that wanted attention from the huge rear wing and side decal SuperBird plus the front nose . I saw one in in Lime Light and the other was Lemon twist and since FORD had the BOSS and MACH 1 decals as Chevy and Mercury dressed up their cars it wasn't odd to see the SuperBird but the Towel rack on the truck look fake.

There are lot's of great cars like this rotting away, the owners just will not sell them no matter what.Drives me crazy !!I've tried to buy a few but the owners are usually retired divorced alcoholic farmers. What a horrible waste ,totally depressing......

It is sad that they are sitting like this, but atleast they still exist. Just become friends with the farmer, so they will know that the car would be in good hands with you.

Clean the worthless junk out of the garage bay that sits 1 foot behind the car. And don't let anyone get hurt when you go to open that garage door. Those are heavy and will probably break/fall apart. Also the lift assist springs will break and fly off somewhere like shot out of a gun. At least its a start though.

the problem with these deals is that the owner will see a 100 point Hemi car sell at Barret Jackson for $900,000 so they think this should bring at least $800,000

So true david... A year ago, I went to look at a '77 black Trans Am with the gold striping and bird on the hood, just like the Bandit car... pics looked good so I drove the 2 hours to get to it. Got there and discovered somebody painted right over the rust... it was a mess! frame, suspension, rearend...everything was rusted deep! I wasn't looking for a project car, but I asked the owner how much, and he said 'Well, I saw Burt Reynolds sell his Trans Am on Mecum auction and he got $80,000, so I figure I can get $25,000 for it'... I wouldn't have paid $5000 for that rust bucket!

yes they have a beautiful car that Daytona is awesome too bad they turned into the people who have it and always dream of doing something with it the only thing that's going to happen to that car is sit there and rot to hell and that's a damn shame for a car like that that's what happens when these valuable pieces end up in dreamers hands if you go by that farm 10 years from now it will still be there but even more rested and more and more of a junk

So can you explain the difference between letting a car rot were no one will see it and putting soo much money into it that you are scared to drive it, so you put it in a collection were no one will see it? either way the car never will get to be enjoyed!!!

A lot of guys bought these cars in the '70's and '80's when they weren't worth much. They pigeon holed them away with grand plans of restoring them. Those guys have gotten old now and are steadily dying out and then their heirs sell the cars. I'm glad because it's a shame to see them degrading. I found a '69 Charger 500 setting in a guy's field with a '69 Charger R/T and a couple of misc. Mopars. They are rusting away and he won't sell them. He has "Big plans" for them. I hope he sells them before they are nothing but VIN's and titles, lol!
