I was always in awe over my grandpas pastel paintings. He managed to capture the beauty and realism in nature so easily. When he passed away, I wished to continue his work so here I am :) I have done a few pieces with them but nothing compared to what he has done. My hopes are to be a great as him one day and put his supplies into use again.

I totally agree that Dry pastel blends better than oil! Oil pastels act a lot like crayons and dry is like charcoal, so much so when I was little I thought they were colored charcoals lol

I'm aware that this is 3 years ago but ,, i highly recommend gallery **soft oil pastels** by mungyo , they're a professional quality oil pastels that are quite creamy and smooth and extremely easy to blend !
@oblomov9407
@oblomov9407 2 жыл бұрын
By wary though ,, mungyo have two grades of oil pastel sets ,, make sure you pick the one labelled ((gallery)) because there is another set of oil pastels by the same brand that are of a rather primitive quality and do NOT blend at all

My grandkids love doing firework and space pictures on black card with soft pastels,I had a small sample pack in a mixed media art kit and didn't know what to do with them..now I've started using them myself ,have nearly used them up,for a tiny sample pack (the pastels were only about an inch and a half long)they sure stretched a long way ,with three grandkids using them constantly! So I'm going to buy some new ones , thanks for this video,very helpful

Spraying fixative over white soft pastels could turn the white transluscent, especially white dry pastel on black, be weary! Thin coats and keep the spray at a descent distance. Did a graphite sketch with white highlights and the highlights almost dissapeared.

Imagine my excitement when I saw that you had the exact same prismacolor pastels that I did. The only thing is I have no idea how expensive these are. Somebody gave them to me , and I have a 24 count. I've never used them cuz I really thought they were just some generic case of pastels but apparently not

I love dry pastels, and getting my fingers dirty. I found that having alcohol wipes work best to clean the fingers. and I like to apply alcohol to the base to blend. Weird, but it works if you have a good layer on. It almost looks more like a painting.

With fixative I was interested myself in trying to do it without a propellant-containing spraycan (I wanted to avoid the harmful gasses because of enviromental impact) I found you can buy liquid fixative, and a normal spray can/one with a pump to spray the painting, and the results have been good up till now :)

I just have the NuPastels from Prismacolor but I really am loving what I can make from them. For really soft backgrounds, I've been enjoying scraping some color from the stick with an exacto knife onto the page, and so the color won't get too much on my fingers I use a paper towel folded to a point to blend the colors. Still working on how to layer colors since I'm a newbie to pastels though. Love how your owl painting turned out.

I found an unopened box of 48 pastels that was an Xmas present from about 10 years ago. No pastel paper so made a grunge background on sketching paper using acrylic paints and began drawing on the paper that had still some damp paint ridges. Now I have khaki patina on my fingertips that has set like military grade concrete, the sketch looks fine though.

My friend Shelia Wolk who is a famous pastel painter actually went blind and deaf from spraying large pieces inside. It's true. It all came back but OMG. You would love her work. She has videos on here. Anyway. I am with you, I love the soft pastels too. I did a bunch of them on layout paper and the skin looked real! You can check my art on my channel if you like. Anyway, you are a lot of fun. Great tips! Oh, also, doing the pastels with prismacolor pencils come out nice too.

Once in class our teacher told us to experiment with dry pastels and at first I didn’t like them because they were so chalky and just made tons of dust. Everyone would just nudge their paper a little and it’d smear because of that dust. I took found out how to avoid that by holding my paper so the dust would go to the middle and would go to the trash can and quickly flip it over. It worked great and I was able to do better on the picture without smearing the dust.
