Hi everyone. So far the videos in this series have gone over in detail what you need to know before you start dyeing yarn. Now we are finally going to apply what we have learned and get colour on some yarn!
In this video I will demonstrate how to dye solid colours. The process is not complicated but I give lots of tips and thorough explanations. If you have not had a chance, I suggest watching Part 1 first.
I hope you find Part 2 useful and I look forward to reading your comments.
Thank You for Watching!

Hi Sheryl. Me again. Could you please tell me which video could help me with the following. I want to dye 1 skein a solid colour. It’s app 100g. I’ve got a restaurant pan so I’m not worried about that but I also have a pot. Is there a video I can see to figure out the mordant amount of water and dye stock. As my yarn is 100g of weight I’m assuming I need 100 ml of dye. I usually put 1 gr dye in 100 ml water. I’m not sure how much mordant and whether I repeat the dye and mordant twice. I believe you mentioned something about the mordant being slow. I don’t know as to whether or not I should hear my pan while «”massaging” the yarn in the colour b4 adding the mordant. I’m 71 yes young and love dying yarns lol. Thank you for any info. I don’t mine looking at another video for my answers if you’ll point me in the right direction. Have a great day. Francine.

I'm not sure what you mean about the mordant amount of water but I have a video on how I mix my dye stock. It's part of the Basics of Yarn Dyeing series titled DYE. As far as the amount of dye remember that the formula I gave is to produce an over saturated colour because that is my taste. You can use my measurements as a starting point but you will still need to experiment and see what works for you. Depending on the depth of shade you're going for you may find you need less or more dye. If you're not sure how the dye will perform start with less, you can always add more dye but it doesn't work the other way around.

I was just watching your episode 4, part 2 and I noticed you have a lot of repetition in your work and thought that reusable zip ties might make your life easier. I just discovered these about a month ago. They would save you putting the shower curtain hangers on and you can reuse them. They are available on Amazon.ca. Just a suggestion. Thanks for your KZfaq videos.

Thanks. I have thought of that to save money but I often need to use different coloured ties to identify which bases I'm dyeing. Once the yarn is dyed the ties usually take on the same colour which would make them useless to use again.

Love your videos and love the way you explain things so throughly. Just wanted to ask what is the ratio to the dry color and water you put in your large water container 🙏
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn Жыл бұрын
In general the ratio that works for me is 1 tsp dye/2 cups water for most colours. Some dye is less pigmented so I may make a stronger concentration but that is rare. For any size container I figure out how much liquid it holds comfortably then I use the ratio I gave to figure out how much dye powder to add, ex. if the container holds 6 cups water I will add 3 tsp dye powder. You can refer to my video about dye linked below. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rtBlldqFs6uugqs.html

Love your color, love your videos, Sheryl. Thank you. Also like your oven. Curious: how hot does the water get while trays are in the oven? Like you not a fan of gloves. Do your gloves help with heated pans? Do you use a special brand of gloves?
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 3 жыл бұрын
The water gets very hot, Ive just developed a high tolerance for pain (that's how much I hate wearing gloves). But sometimes it's just too hot and I have to wear them. I just use regular dish washing gloves, nothing special to protect from heat but they're good enough for pulling out hot pans or dealing with the hot water. The oven is more of a steamer so it doesn't get as hot as an oven for cooking food.

Hello! I absolutely loved all of your videos! I had a question, how do you manage to get your skeins to run clear when rinsing at the end? I love dyeing yarn, but i get so frustrated when I have to rinse for so long. My choice of mordant is citric acid, and I typically add 1 Tbs/100 grams of fiber. Do you have any advice? Thank you so much!
@EssenceofAutumnYarn

I'm glad you enjoy my videos, thank you for watching. The nice thing about dyeing protein fibres with acid dyes is that usually all of the dye will be absorbed during the heating process. First of all are you using animal based fibres with the acid dye? Plant based fibres won't work. After the dye has exhausted make sure to heat set the yarn long enough so that the dye permanently adheres to the fibres (the dye manufacturer will give guid lines on the temp and how long. When washing the yarn make sure that it is fully cooled and use cold water, warm or hot water can cause acid dyes to run. Hope these tips are helpful.

Sometimes I do add miss dyes to the website. Usually I end up using them in my own projects. I design knitwear and these mistake yarns are great for working out stitch gauges and making samples while designing. For example I used the yellow spotted yarn to knit the sample shown for my Winter Wanderlust Pattern on my website.

Oh my!! I am so glad I found you :-) Finally, a professional fiber dying artist. One who understands the chemistry and the physical process. I have been wanting to hand dye wool roving into solid colors as I am hand processing fleece for wet felting. I totally get that things may be different with roving vs. yarn (I will figure it out by doing) but I just can't tell you how much I appreciate your knowledge and ability to teach the dying process. There are so few fiber dying artists on KZfaq that are professionally making a product that needs to be consistent. There are people out there using food coloring that I just don't get at all....Anyway, thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. You now have a fan for life :-)

Thank you for the kind words. I'm sharing what I know but I will humbly admit I don't know everything, there is so much more for me to learn and explore. However I happy to hear that what I'm sharing in my videos is helping you out with your dye adventures. I've never dyed roving but as far as protein fibres go I can't see it being much different then dyeing yarn except maybe some extra care may need to be taken to prevent felting or matting (just guessing). Roving is something I would like to add to my dye adventures one day.

Love your videos! My problem is that sometimes dye bleeds out when you rinse the yarn (even though it’s had plenty of time with heat, acid, and absorption of the dye). But now seeing the water after you rinsed that dark yarn, maybe I’m being overly concerned (as mine isn’t as much as yours 🤣).
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 3 жыл бұрын
I probably use too much dye at times because I love my colours to be very saturated. The yarn can only absorb so much so yes the water isn't always clear. Since I heat set for awhile not much comes out when washing.

I really appreciate these tutorials, and now I understand where I’m going wrong. 😁. The one question I do have (and I apologize if you said it and I missed it), is that you keep referring to using one cup of acid, but how much acid is that? It’s one cup of water with ? acid. I believe one commenter said she uses one tsp of acid to 100g of yarn. Or is that enough? I’m going to try this out tomorrow, and see if I can improve my dying technique, thanks to you!! Now to watch your other videos.

I'm glad this was helpful for you. I'm referring my acid mix. You can watch my basics of yarn dyeing video on Acid (in playlist) to see how I mix it up or you could just use the same amount of vinegar instead. Use my measurements as a guide but experiment to see how much acid works for your purposes because this may be different than what works for me.

It's important to use the dye that will work with the fibre or material your using. For example you can not use the same dye for wool that you would use for cotton. I only work with protein fibres such as wool, mohair, alpaca so I use acid dyes that are formulated for that. Yes you could do tie dye techniques using this type of acid dye as long as the material is protein based and not a plant based material such as cotton or linen.

Hello Sheryl- I’m a hobby dyer and like you, I am a HUGE fan of the deep saturated colors, but have been asked to knit a baby layette in a very pale barely there blush pink color. Any suggestions on how to dye an even color when using just a small amount of dye?
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 4 ай бұрын
I would follow the steps I outline, maybe use less acid to start to let the colours absorb more slowly and evenly, you can always add more acid. Another option is to purchase a dye that is similar to the shade you want and follow the recommended directions of the supplier.

Sheryl a question please. With the berry dye why wouldn’t you just add double the amount of dye at the beginning to get the extra saturated look you desired? And thanks again xox
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sue. I think I mention that I don't like to add large amounts of dye all at once. I've found through trial and error that I get more even coverage for solids when I add dye in stages and check the coverage between applications.

If you didn’t flip it on round two, would you get a subtle tonal variation, or something else?
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 2 жыл бұрын
When I want a subtle tone I use much less dye but I will still turn the yarn to get an even colour, that's just my preference.

What temperature do you use to set the dye?
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 7 ай бұрын
The dye manufacturer will usually give instructions on how to get the best results. I suggest starting with the temp and set times they recommend.

I don't understand what temperature you bake the yarn at in the oven or how long?
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 2 жыл бұрын
I suggest you follow the recommendations of the dye company you are using for best results. This is what works for my purposes. I use a proofing oven instead of a regular cooking oven or burner. 200 F is hot enough to set the yarn. After the dye is exhausted I let it cook a minimum of 5 hrs or sometimes overnight. I can do this because there is no direct heat that can damage the yarn (I'm using a proofing oven).

Are you dyeing this at room temperature? and I use top fiber not skiens
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 2 жыл бұрын
No the yarn is always preheated (hot enough to see steam) before I start adding dye . I've never worked with top fibre but if I did I would use the same methods that I do when dyeing skeins.

Am I missing where you state what temperature you set the oven at?
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 2 жыл бұрын
I use a proofing oven to set the yarn. The max temp it reaches is only about 200 F (90 C) and that's enough to set the colour.

@@EssenceofAutumnYarn Thanks, I finally found your response...never tried to contact before. It's great to know I can dye my handspun yarn without having to stand next to the dye pot like the acid dye directions say. Thanks again. Lovely yarn.

How long does it usually take for the dye to absorb completely? I have left them in the stove for hours and there’s still always dye left in there and I’m not using as much dye! Doesn’t make sense.

I’m using the right amount of dharma dye, the right amount of heat, and maybe even more Citric acid… 🤔
@EssenceofAutumnYarn
@EssenceofAutumnYarn 11 ай бұрын
Some dyes that are highly pigmented may not fully absorb. Dark red and blue dyes are prone to this. A little faint tint of colour in the water is ok. If there is a lot of dye left then there is an issue. Dharma has many different types of dyes. Are you using their acid dye on a protein yarn not plant based or acrylic?

@@EssenceofAutumnYarn yes! I have all the books and have watched about a million videos on yarn dying, so I know I’m doing things properly. I watched another of your videos and it seems like the dye is exhausted but there is still a bit of pigment left over just like in your video, (this is after at least 3h) but then I’ll watch others dying yarn and the dye exhausts in 10-15 minutes, so I’m not sure what’s going on! Frustrating though for sure.

I honestly don't have many of those. Any that I have I save to use for my own knitting or crochet projects instead of taking yarn from my shop. For example I used the yellow "mistake" in a design and it turned out wonderful. So nothing goes to waste.
