It's not so bad. I'm incredibly poor, but I've amassed a nice collection. I suspect that Lena has gotten an endorsement deal with Gamblin, which is no bad thing -- they do make pretty good stuff -- but you can go cheaper on the paints. I suggest Richeson/Shiva, a very good pro-quality paint, but easy on the budget; you can get a basic set for under $36 dollars. Student paint is all right for some colors (not all). Gamsol really is the best odorless mineral spirit; you can find 16 oz (which is plenty) for under ten bucks. The Dick Blick website has excellent prices for this stuff. Ebay has brushes for incredibly cheap prices -- as in a buck apiece. Some are pretty funky; some are surprisingly good. You can use cheap make-up brushes as blender brushes. Michaels usually has collections of cheap bristle brushes. Eventually, you'll want a couple of good round brushes for realistic work -- kolinsky sable is best. I participate in a forum for artists called Wetcanvas, and I specialize in giving advice in how to paint on the cheap. If you need specific pointers or more information, write to me.

you could also just get only the primary colors this woulf also help you understanding color mixing better
@StopWearingPants
@StopWearingPants 7 жыл бұрын
It's cheap, buying all those colors is a waste of money, because you can mix all of them. All you need are primary colors. You use them to make you secondary and tertiary colors. Buy a Red, a yellow, a blue, white, and like burn umber or something. (Never use black, it's for suckers). Rather, mix complimentary colors, so that they can neutralize one another. Red and green make a ridiculous "black". Oil kicks butt because it goes a long way. A tiny pea sized amount, mixed with medium, or thinner; then just keep moving the pigment, it goes and goes like the energizer bunny.

I'm new to oil painting too and it can seem complicated but let's not overthink it. I think the most important medium is the paint and the solvent, the solvent will thin the paint and more importantly clean the brushes when we are done! As for the other stuff I think that will come as we learn more of what we want, the most important thing is to just get started and have fun with it!

@@Itz_Debs No, because dawn dish soap may only help clean your brushes after you have finished painting. You still can't use it to dilute the paint while painting, the way you would use water for watercolors or acrylics. You still need a solvent for that. Hope this helps :)

One thing that I always bear in mind when I am painting is that if the end result really isn't what I had hoped for and would not want it hanging on my wall, I can throw it away and start again. No big deal. If you consider the cost of a night on the town and compare it to the cost of a canvas and a bit of paint it is cheaper to enjoy yourself with an evening of painting than blowing your cash on alcohol. There is also the added bonus that you might one day sell a painting, but a night on the town disappears into the ether and you'll never get your money back. Great vid by the way, thanks.

The whole paint thinner situation freaks me out, that’s why I’m hesitant to use oil paints
@loati94
@loati94 4 жыл бұрын
I don't use paint thinner. I thin them a little with solvent free medium from Gamblin or solvent free thinner from the green for oil line from Sennelier, I use different brushes for bright and dark colors and I wipe them really well on a towel before changing color and to clean them at the end of the day I use safflower oil to take out as much paint from the brush as I can and then wash with soap and warm water. Going solvent free is a bit more expensive, but you don't inhale any toxic fumes

I really want to transition from watercolour and acrylic to oil so I can finally work in an impressionist style! I'm so scared that it looks so complicated though and expensive, do these oils and such used as solvents last long or run out quickly? I don't know why but so scared of being a beginner at something I love all over again but I know I can only get the results I want if I master oils

I currently have a set of oil paints that my mother had been using. She passed away a couple of years ago. After two years I decided to give it a try. I checked the oils and they are in good shape. Oils if you keep them shut and closed from the air outside will not harden. At least in my case they came out as if they were new. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for making these tutorials, Lena! I've been watching your speed paintings before, but I'm now about to start painting with oils myself and your tutorials come in very handy. I usually paint with acrylics and watercolor, and oil painting always seemed like a big hassle to me compared to those, but I'm easing into it with a starter set of water soluble oil paints.

Yes for 99% of the colors. But there's no way to get the phalo green intensity, gold/silver paints, irredesents, etc. of specialty paint. I agree best to learn the basics of mixing the 3 primaries to start. It will save you a lot of paint in the end.
