You're so right about Larry's strength. I'd go one step further and say that Larry was one of the best conditioned players in the league for those 13 years. He excelled at the end of games because his body was conditioned so well that he had more focus and energy at the end of games, quarters, halves...He wasn't "athletic" but he had a motor that nobody else had.

FYI Bird's height and weight listed is from when he was in college. Talk to those players that played against him and they will tell you Bird was a legit 6 foot 10. Bird;s weight as a Celtic was between 240 and 245. Bird's standing reach was also 9 foot 1 inches! And as a rookie Bird had a 28 inch vertical leap. Bird was a much better athlete that people thought and bigger and stronger than anticipated and had a basket ball IQ that was unmatched. Bird had the court vision of a PG, could rebound like a PF and shoot lights out from every where on the court. I do believe Bird is the best all around player we have seen. Bird created the 50-40-90 shooting club, did it 2 years back to back (87 and 88) and was so close in 85 and 86 that if you total his stats for 85,86,87 and 88 = Bird averaged 50-40-90 over 4 consecutive seasons. Bird went to a 29 win team as a rookie, and with 1 player change to the roster in ML Carr, and a new coach in Bill Fitch, Bird was the main reason for Boston to win 61 games = a 32 game turn around = the largest single season turn around in NBA history!!!

Bird and DJ played with one mind at times. Larry stealing the inbound from Thomas......watch DJ read Larry's movement to make that layup. Countless times that only DJ understood what Bird saw and reacted perfectly. Sometimes it was Bird reacting to what DJ saw. I grew up on these games and as a short guy I'll hang the 3 first and the 33 second on my wall. All while unshiftable from the position of Larry as GOAT.

What people don't remember is that Portland was the only one to beat Boston at home that season. They make it sound like he was bored and needed something to make it a challenge. The real reason he played so much of the game left-handed, and especially let the media know he was going to do so, was because he wanted to embarrass them completely as his revenge to that only loss. And he did!
@lll9416

Bird was more like 240 lbs or so. Back in the day, the NBA used college weights and heights and rarely updated them.. Thus the 6'9" 220lbs listing was really 6'10 about 240..

In 1986, he played in 82 games and averaged 25.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game. During the six-game series, logging 269 out of a possible 288 minutes of floor time. Bird was named the Finals' MVP for that year, averaging 24 points, 9.7 rebounds, 9.7 assists, and 2.7 steals per game for the series. He was selected to play in his seventh All-Star game, won his third MVP award, his second Finals MVP award, and his third NBA championship

In my opinion there isn't any comparison to Larry. He's in a place all his own. The team scoring turn around his first year, the hustle, passing, his IQ, trash talk and backing it up, confidence, shooting, steals, rebounds, sacrifice, discipline, the fact that at the end of his career his body was torn up and he was still better than most players in the league. To play with that amount of pain and to refuse pain killers and shots through his entire career just puts his mental and physical toughness at a level where there isn't anyone else comparable. He stands alone. He's so special. And getting the whole team involved. He wasn't a selfish player.

There is someone who is comparable. If there wasn't, the 80s would not have been what they were. The only reason Bird gets the edge of Magic is outside shooting really. Everything else is pretty much on par. Bird may have gotten rookie of the year, but Magic got MVP in the finals as a rookie. Nobody else has ever done that. Magic is the only rookie in NBA history to get MVP of the finals. They didn't even give it to Bird as a sophomore when he was clearly the actual MVP.

@@rogerahier4750 The 1980 FMVP AFTER Magic's great game 6 was voted to go to Kareem, but because Kareem was not present the voters were asked to change their votes so Magic would get the award. What happened is covered in the book "Kareem" pages 140-141. Magic was the best player in game 6 ( Wilkes also scored his career high of 37 in game 6) but Kareem is why LA won the other 3 games!
@rogerahier4750
@rogerahier4750 6 ай бұрын
@jbbj9720 I never said Bird wasn't the goat. I said he had a sleight edge on Magic. Winning MVP of the finals when Kareem went down as a rookie is amazing. only time it's been done. I would have to make them even on leadership for that. To come in as a rookie and take over a team like the Lakers is at least as good as what Bird did as far as leadership.
@rogerahier4750
@rogerahier4750 6 ай бұрын
@jbbj9720 I am not ignoring that at all. It's just that tough doesn't make you the goat, it just means you're tough. Sure, it has an impact, but it's not why he is the goat. He actually wasn't as tough as he thought he was because he only played for 12 years.
