“The mask comes off and they’re like ‘I’m just a nobody or something or whatever it is’” is a great encapsulation of Mason missing so much and kind of the entire point of the third act. The guy says “I’m vengeance” which just reinforces what Riddler told Batman earlier, which is that Batman inspired him and they were doing similar things for similar reasons: using their anger and loneliness to go out and inspire fear through “focused violence.” That little comment in combo with the Riddler’s speech earlier is what proves to Bruce he needs to totally rethink his approach to Batman and what he can mean to Gotham as a symbol.
@robertwild9447
@robertwild9447 2 жыл бұрын
I literally thought during that scene that the guy was going to say "I'm nobody" or "I'm the Riddler" or something like that, but I was surprised when he said "I'm vengeance". You're right that it reinforced the entire point of the movie. What I did miss is that the guy Batman unmasks in that scene was at the funeral. There are a few people with green coats on during the funeral sequence, who are all presumably Riddler's goons.

Yeah, that goon saying “I’m vengeance” is a pretty big part of the movie….. Don’t know how he missed that.
@tobylerone4285
@tobylerone4285 2 жыл бұрын
I think he missed it because that vengeance aspect is underwritten. We never get a real sense of Bruce’s relationship with his parents so the idea that all this is in the service of revenge doesn’t really hit home. You’re right that this scene signals the change in his outlook but I didn’t really notice him being particularly brutal or harsh beforehand… the scene where Bats stares at the kid awkwardly is a nice way to set up the fact he’s uncomfortable with being kind to people, but that isn’t really reinforced or brought up again until the very end of the film. So there’s a lot of time there for the audience to forget that motivation or facet of his character. Contrast that with TDK, which is constantly reminding the viewer of its themes so it all pays off forcefully. You’re right about the development itself, but hopefully you’d agree it could have been handled better.
@FreefallSC
@FreefallSC 2 жыл бұрын
He said the same line that Batman said about being vengeance and that is what Selena calls him the entire movie after hearing him say it. First it was the riddler telling him they were the same and him denying it. Then that guy says he is vengeance and it underscores the point that they really do think they are doing the same thing as Batman and that fear alone can’t save the city. Gotham needs hope. That is when he decides to become a beacon of hope for the city and be a real hero instead of just a revenge fueled vigilante. There is also the idea that he needs to be Bruce Wayne as well as Batman throughout the movie as well.
@1Chasg

Exactly. Can't believe people are missing this. It's a huge point about the ending. Batman literally says at the end he realises now he needs to be MORE than just vengeance.
@jamesoblivion
@jamesoblivion 2 жыл бұрын
The reason it becomes a different kind of Batman movie toward the end is because Batman is changing. He's realizing he has to change. That beating the shit out of criminals every night isn't accomplishing what he wants to accomplish, and he has to reset his Batman goals. By the end, he's realized that it's about helping people, not just feeding his own vengeance, and that it's as important for ordinary citizens to trust him, as it is for criminals to fear him. The film has to shift, because we're watching a vigilante take the first tentative step toward becoming a hero.

42:55 - I think the jerking movement was strategic. Tying not to spoil anything, Batman was in a situation where others were in imminent danger. When he started the Batmobile, the bad-guys froze, but what he wanted them to do was disburse and leave the area, which happened when they saw the jerking movement. My favorite part of the movie was when Batman was forced to jump of a really tall building and you see that he is still not totally comfortable with that. For a moment he hesitates then finally jumps. This shows that he is still a very young Batman and has some things to work out. I enjoyed seeing the rough landings throughout the movie and moments where he wasn't totally in control. Hope to see him address some of these issues in the sequel, showing a progression in his skillset.

After seeing this a second time, the entire third act is definitely set up throughout the film. It's just done with a subtle hand. Something we're honestly not used to in Batman movies. I love the Nolan entries, but they're as subtle as a brick to the face. This being a mystery and procedural, that kind of subtlety is much more appropriate here. When you pick up the details...the mentions of the seawall toward the beginning of the film, the comments on Riddler's video talking about explosives...it definitely doesn't come out of nowhere. In a whodunit, the guarded secret is the killer's identity...but we know it's the Riddler, so the mystery here is the full scope of his plan. And the movie gives us hints toward that...but like any good mystery, it also distracts us from those hints.
@starwarsnerd100

Ok, but the whole plan ultimately felt…anticlimactic. Even if there were clues sprinkled throughout, the film didn’t do a good job at creating any tension around the sea wall, which is why it can feel like it came out of nowhere. The reveal is like, “oh, huh, sea wall. Ok,” rather than “oh no, not the sea wall!!!” If they had established a character living by the sea wall, or showed how a failing sea wall is affecting the citizens living around it, then we would care more about it being destroyed.

I mean he never outsmarts riddler at all in the movie. He only figures out about the bombing and assassination because Riddler thought he figured it out and lets it slip. The story at the heart of this film surprised me. Batman starts consumed by his injustice, he is vengeance. He pushes everyone away, even Alfred, focusing 100% on his mission. This is the batman I thought I wanted to see. But this film did more, it showed me (and bruce) that this isn't enough, Batman is more than a vigilante seeking vengeance through creating fear in criminals. It does this on a very personal level, by making Bruce come face to face with people just like him. This is why the masked goons were important at the end, precisely because u don't see thier faces. They are the faceless victims of past trauma hiding behind a mask of vengeance, just like him. And with this he realises that this isn't enough, just like these goons he won't change anything like this. He needs to be more. This was a charcter film about The Batman, that has not been done before. I feel like after watching this, I understand who Batman is more, and I say this as a lifelong Batman nerd. Best "first" Batman movie, better than Begins and the other firsts. Loved everything except the Joker which had zero place in this. If had any criticisms, Batman was waaaay too bulletproof. Its fine if it was one or two bullets, but he was taking entire magazines. I don't at all think that the movie was ever going to end with just Batman catching Riddler. Clearly there was more to come. Did they have to go as big as Gotham being flooded? Maybe not. But Batman having to thwart an assassination attempt on the woman running for mayor felt like a natural conclusion to me. I was also surprised that once Riddler was captured, he was never broken out in this movie. What totally makes the third act for me is the scene where Batman lights the flare and leads the citizens to safety. That was absolutely Batman to me, and earned in this movie.

I agree but part of the problem is Batman never beats Riddler mentally. He never outsmarts him. Like even in the interrogation scene Batman thinks it's over until Riddler tells him there is more. @@alexanderguerrero347 Batman outsmarting the Riddler to me wasn't really the point. He becomes Gotham's savior by prioritizing helping people over scaring criminals. That totally worked for me, and the movie wasn't ABOUT batman outsmarting Riddler. Riddler saw him as an equal in this movie, not his competition. He's genuinely broken when he realizes that Batman doesn't approve of his methods. What matters to me is that Batman saves all of those people at the stadium, who all would've died if he wasn't there. Batman does solve the majority of the riddles in this movie, but even though he doesn't stop the flooding, I still saw him as a hero at the end. I also can't blame Batman for the victims Riddler does kill because he never telegraphed them like Joker does in The Dark Knight. All he can do is deal with the aftermath.

I'm gonna take what Matt Reeves said at face value and believe that the Joker won't be a villain in the sequel. I just think it's too soon in terms of the real world, as well as the fact that we kinda have an oversaturation of Jokers right now. Heath Ledger set the gold standard, and ever since then we've gotten Suicide Squad Joker, Joker Joker, and then Gotham Joker, and also apparently Batwoman Joker. There are too many Jokers! That's not even counting Persona 5 Joker! It's also very likely they're gonna continue the Nolanverse's tradition of 2 villains per film (Scarecrow and Ra's al ghul, Joker and Two-Face, Bane and Talia). You could argue that there were actually 4 villains in the Batman (Falcone, Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman), but in terms of the story, not really. Catwoman is in no way a villain, and Penguin was mainly an informant to Batman; he wasn't pulling any of the strings behind the conflict of the movie. So really the villains of this film were Falcone and Riddler. I think a fun pairing for the next set of films (not necessarily the immediate sequel) would be Penguin and Mr. Freeze. That would just be funny, but also it would make sense if at this point Penguin would be increasing his foothold on the city by investing in more and more black market goods. Maybe Mr. Freeze is conducting research that benefits Penguin and so Penguin decides to fund his research, but at the same time might be blackmailing Mr. Freeze to work for him as a sort of goon as well. At the core of it, this pairing would illuminate Batman to the fact that many criminals are themselves victims and that many lack the luxury of choice, instead being forced by circumstance to commit crime. For Penguin, the obvious cinematic influences would be mobster films such as Scarface, The Godfather, and Goodfellas. Essentially Penguin would be born and raised into a culture of crime, leaving him barely any resources to reject crime in his life. As for Mr. Freeze, he would be forced into a life of crime due to an abysmal healthcare system that would leave his wife dying and vulnerable, and he in mounds and mounds of debt. Another pair I think could work would be Hush and the Court of Owls. At this point in Batman's journey, I believe he will have found or is finding success in helping Gotham through the Wayne name as opposed to Batman's methods. With Bruce Wayne back in the spotlight, and the common belief that Thomas Wayne caused the killing of Edward Elliot, Thomas Elliot will try to enact his revenge. At the same time, The Court of Owls are seeing their control of the city slip because of Batman and Bruce's efforts. I've yet to work out the plot, but the primary goal of the two villains would be to question and oppose Batman as a symbol of hope, like how Falcone and Riddler made Bruce question himself as a symbol of vengeance.

Yeah, I don't really want another Joker either, but if it's Barry Keoghan, and he teams up with Dano's Riddler, that could be awesome. Have you seen The Killing of a Sacred Deer? He is amazing in it (Colin Farrell, too). The film and the plans for sequels and TV shows also convinced me that they can adapt a ton of Batman villains, and maybe it would feel weird without a Joker. Also, I think Reeves can pull of a transformation of the character similar to what he did with Batman. Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Ventriloquist and Court of Owls would be my priorities though. I like your suggestions, but I don't really need Hush, because he would be to similar to the Riddler.

"Did he stall the batmobile" LOL That's what I thought too but I think it was just a lurch to scare the criminals. Anyway, this was for me the best Batman movie from a visual perspective, Reeves is turning into a great director. However, story-wise I love the idea of Batman going film noir but then it goes wacko in the final act, shoe horning in The Joker, the big flood, a police officer who is likely going to be Gordon's side kick during the show etc. It just feels tacked on.

If RobatBatinbat's first outing is Se7en, then the sequel could be The Thing, with the Dark Knight constantly trying to figure out who/where the murderer is, and not being able to trust anyone around him. And classic Black Mask is a better version of Hush.

Great movie, but has some problems. It's too long. The third act drags, I felt there were three or so endings hidden in it. The flooding felt wacky compared to the Riddler's other grounded actions. The villain is great, but the fact he revealed himself and Bruce didn't even try to find out his identity by himself was disappointing. The Penguin was interesting, but his plot armor was ridiculous. Dude was caught producing drugs, had a body in one of his cars, worked with mafia, caused a huge car chase that had to kill at least a few people and they just... left him!?

@@starwarsnerd100 I liked the Wayne secrets twist, but it wasn’t extreme enough for me. I heard two ideas that could’ve maybe made it better. They could’ve done the Batman Damned thing of having Thomas being a adulterer whom Martha ordered to kill and accidentally got herself killed in the process, or in the even further extreme Thomas was super abusive and while away from Bruce Alfred killed him to protect Martha, who in insane grief killed herself by choking on the pearls. Alfred then has raise Bruce even though he’s the one who made him an orphan in the first place. This universe is totally prime for that kind of deconstruction of the Batman. I like most comic book conventions particularly Batman ones, but there needs to be remixes and different takes otherwise it becomes stale no matter how beautiful it looks.

If I saw that I’d roll my eyes and see it as a sign that the director doesn’t care about the source material and wants to change things just for the sake of “subverting expectations” like S8 GOT or The Last Jedi. There’s a reason “what if Superman was evil “ stories have a pastiche like homelander or Omni man or an alternate universe. Just a personal theory regarding WHY Colin Farrell as Penguin. If I recall they were originally eyeing Jonah Hill for the role, who supposedly asked for a relatively large paycheck and separated from the project after not being able to come to a compromise. The details of that situation I certainly don't know but I do know that Jonah Hill was in decent shape physically at the time. Leads me to believe they MAY have already been pushing putting HILL in prosthetics in order to create a more comic accurate look for the character, and THAT may indeed have been what led to him asking for what was supposedly an unreasonably large paycheck. I couldn't argue either side to be wrong for their decisions in such a scenario. Now, imagine your Penguin actor just dropped out of your Batman production because he was resistant to the idea of portraying an overweight character BUT, and here's the theory part, you've already made the overweight prosthetic mock-ups. At that point you can hire whoever doesn't mind wearing it in order to play a legendary over-the-top personality of a character. Do correct me if anyone knows better details but, from the outside looking in, that was the idea I gathered.

1:08:00 I completely agree about the ending. It felt disconnected thematically from the rest of the movie. The riddler had been a force to overturn corruption throughout the film... In a way he and Batman were trying to achieve the same goals through vastly different means. But in the end, the Riddler just turns himself in because his end goal was to flood the entire city? This had nothing to do with fixing corruption, instead it was just a bland terror attack that felt baseless. Plus it was targeted against a hopeful new Mayor who opposed the same evils the Riddler and Batman had. It felt utterly simplistic and easy for a film that was all about moral grays and exploring true systemic wrongdoing.

The Riddler and Batman trying to achieve the same goals through "focused violence" is why the ending works and ties into those themes, because he learns he needs to save and inspire people and not just focus on vengeance. Also, you say flooding the city has nothing to do with the corruption and problems with the system? It does, his whole video mocks the idealistic notion that a new mayor will fix the system, he mocks her "real change" slogan by saying the only real change they'll get is flooding the city. He's one of those "instead of fixing the system, let's burn everything to the ground" types.
