In early 1945, with Hitler's Third Reich on the brink of collapse, the Allies prepared to cross the Rhine, while the Red Army advanced relentlessly towards the German border. The year 1944 had been disastrous for the Germans on the Eastern Front, culminating in the annihilation of Army Group Center and the pursuit of the Red Army to the gates of Warsaw.
Faced with imminent defeat, Hitler made a monumental decision: to send his last armored reserves to relieve the defenders of the city and secure the oil fields of Hungary. Meanwhile, in the Kremlin, Stalin summoned his most aggressive generals and created a subtle competition among them, pointing out the routes to Berlin and challenging them to be the first to conquer the city.
By mid-April 1945, the outcome of the war in Europe was undeniable. Allied forces advanced on multiple fronts, consolidating the inevitability of the result.
Berlin, a metropolis reduced from 4.3 million to 3 million inhabitants since the beginning of the war, witnessed the collapse of the Nazi regime, with only the most fervent followers holding out hope until the last moment.
Hitler blamed the German people, considering them cowardly for not having fought more fiercely.
