What came before:
After solving the riddle of the sundial in the silver grove, and retrieving the gem of light, the party was ambushed by a demon sorcerer and his companions. They tried asking politely for the gem so that they could open a gateway between the abyss and the Forgotten Realms to allow their demon army to frow through, but the party refused, much to the chagrin of the sorcerer.
