What was the name of this Royal Navy midshipman who supposedly said this so soon after the British victories at Bladensburg, Washington, Alexandria, Fort Washington and North Point ?!

North Point was a tactical British victory in that the British held the field.This is based on a book by Robert George Gleig. He was an officer in Robert Ross's Army. The book is Campaigns of the British Army at Washington and New Orleans 11814 1815, available as a free kindle download from Amazon. Robert Ross planned the attack to be a coup de main, strike rapidly, strike hard before the enemy has a chance to react. Before the Army advanced on Baltimore, troops packed 3 days worth of rations an were issued extra ammunition. Robert Ross intended to take, loot and burn Baltimore all in the space of 3 days. The British captured two American Dragoons before they began their advance. The American dragoons told Ross the Americans defending Baltimore numbered 20,000. Ross did not believe their information. Robert Ross did not expect the Americans would be able to offer any resistance. Shortly after the British began their advance they encountered resistance. The British did take the field. But before the Battle started, Ross exposed himself to enemy fire and was killed. The battle lasted between 2 and 3 hours. The British took more casualties than did the Americans, including Including General Ross. According to Gleig the British thought they had fought an American force of 6000-7000 men. The American force numbered 3000 men. The British force numbered 4000. At the end of the battle the British Army did not pursue the American Army but remained on the field until the next day. That is not the proper course of action for a coup de main. That the British force did not pursue but rested for a day is an indication that the British force had been handled roughly and needed time to recover. When the British advanced on Baltimore the following day, they expected to meet the same force they had fought the previous day. When they arrived at Baltimore they found that force was but part of a force of 20,000 the Americans had gathered to defend Baltimore. It was not the bold British Army marching to Baltimore to confront a superior American force. It was the British Army blundering into a confrontation with a vastly superior American force. And it happened because Robert Ross believed the Americans were incapable of gathering such a force. According to Gleig, the British troops wanted to have a go at the Americans. The British did not try to have a go at the Americans. Col. Arthur Brooke, who had succeeded Ross in command of the British Army, sent a message back to the fleet that the fleet had to break into Baltimore inner harbor and take out the American positions from the rear. The fleet could not break into the harbor. The day after the British force arrived at Baltimore it beat a hasty retreat back to its ships. It took the British force 2 days to get to Baltimore. They got back to their ships in less than a day. Tactical victory yes but a meaningless one. All the British Army accomplished by that victory was nothing, except getting a number of themselves killed or wounded.

It documents that MG Ross did say, when informed that 20,000 militia had gathered to defend Baltimore, he did not care if it rained militia. According to Gleig, MG Ross did not believe that report. Robert Ross seemed to think the US would be incapable of offering resistance. His rash act of exposing himself to enemy fire would indicate Ross did not think the Americans were capable of offering resistance. Maybe he did not inform his second in command what his plan was, because he believed there was no chance he would be incapacitated. What is your opinion? This book says the British thought they had encountered a force of 12,000 American troops at North Point. In Gleig's book, it is stated they American force numbered 6000-7000. The American force numbered 3000, compared to 4000 British. That is an indication that the British did find American resistance daunting., took more than minimal punishment from the US troops and rested on the field overnight rather than pursue the US force not just to mourn the death of MG Ross. They had to recover from the day's battle.

ryan363 FSK actually stayed in the brig with other prisoners and he was the only one with a window so all night the prisoners were asking if the flag was still there until it got to a point where there was too much smoke that he had to wait until dawn to be able to tell that the flag was still there. That's the only part this video got wrong

Tenzen Chang No, he was a lawyer that was hired and sent to British ship to secure the release of American POW’s, specifically Dr. William Bean. The British agreed but made him wait there while they attacked Baltimore and Fort McHenry certain that they would be Victorious. They were released and allowed to go back to the harbor after the battle of Baltimore. He started the poem(Star spangled banner) while on the ship and finished it after he returned to Baltimore.

D Henderson I agree, I’m born and raised and in the area(Annapolis) and I’ve been to both many times. I’m always in Awe or both the flag, our Anthem and Fort McHenry. From what I’ve learned many merchants from Baltimore sank their livelihoods(Ships) in the harbor to make a sort of reefs so that the British warships couldn’t get right up on Fort McHenry. The closest they could get was within 2 miles, which is still very close.
