The War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain ultimately ended in stalemate. Yet in the aftermath of one U.S. victory, a poem was penned that would become the new nation’s national anthem.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

The National Anthem has a deeper meaning for nearly everyone I know who served, myself included.

Whose brought stripes and bright stars through the perilous night? You my good sir! God bless you and all that have served.

I never knew about the sunken ships being used to block the harbor, very interesting.

Although, I think this a well-known fact but still interesting to note that a future relative of George Armstiead would be Lewis Armstiead. He was a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, famous for leading his Virginia troops and dieing during Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg.

The building in front of the flag that was shown, was not built until the civil war era, so the “sally port” was a tunnel the now enters the fort, but then in 1814 there was just a bridge
