One of my high school teachers, Mr. Sturgis, was a young lieutenant the US Army on Guam. He was badly injured by shrapnel from a Japanese artillery shell. Most of the US troops were Marines but there was also the 77th Infantry Division from the Army. [Mr. Sturgis never talked about the war with us. I only found out these details from his obituary when he died a couple of years ago.]

Just in the last two years, we've been able to find information about my Uncle, USMC PFC Robert Beckmann, he was killed July 10 1944 on the island of Guam. He was a Marine sniper. My daughter and I had gone to the family cemetery, and beside my grandparents' graves was a marker for my Uncle, but I suspected that he wasn't actually buried there. My daughter called the national memorial for the battle on Guam and found out that he is buried on Guam, and his name is etched on the wall at the memorial of the fallen soldier's. None of this was ever mentioned in my family, i wished there was family left to talk to about my Uncle, I don't want him to be forgotten! Oh and I named my son Robert in part after his Great Uncle!

Chek out the movie with Jeff Hunter. No man is a island. Came out around 1961? Based on George Tweed. Was there from 1941 until retaken in 1944.

Has a an American History teacher in Memphis Tennessee when I was in high school back in 1979 was involved in the battle of Guam. He spoke of the WW2 often he said that many Americans didn't appreciate the sacrifice he and other Americans paid. He hated anyone confederate anything. He was a tough old man he would take confederate bandanas from students and burn them in class. He would debate student's about the Civil War and WW2, as well as the Vietnam war. The Korean War he never spoke of because he lost 2 brothers in Korea. Mr. Higgins last of the tough ones. Rest in Peace

Apra Harbor is in the west of Guam, not the east. Reefs on the east side of the island shouldn't be a problem for a landing on the west side. The B-29 being built didn't depend on Guam. The decision was made earlier.

My step father was in the Marines and fought in this battle. He was with the 9th Defense Bn. The only things he ever told me about the war was that his unit had the record for shooting down Zeros, he saw a lot of Japanese soldiers jumping off a cliff and having malaria sucked. Other than that, he never really talked about the war but he always talked about how much he loved that island. He went on and on about the beauty of the island and how much he loved the people. I really hope to visit someday and see what he always told me about. (he died in 2002)

I've heard some amazing stories from people who had relatives in the battle. That generation was full of some incredible people. Your grandfather was right to talk about the islands beauty. It really is a spectacular place. Thanks for sharing that memory!

My uncle. I J Snowden was killed here flying a hellcat. His wingman met my grandpa i guess after the war and said he was shot up and his plane was on fire and he saw him bail out over the island. he was executed by the Japanese according to the natives and the naval report.

Thanks for the video. I'm puzzled though why you use the word "casualties" to signify dead. Casualties, the word, generally means losses to both causes, ie, dead and wounded combined. I've never heard it used to imply strictly dead soldiers. Sorry to nit pick on this but just say combined casualties, with 1600 dead and 6000 wounded, for example.

Good info. Nice concise video. However, that tank was towed there and used as a target, most likely after the war. I have stood right there.

My father fought in Guam, and only said there was lots of blood for such a small island, but it had to be taken. Never told us anymore than that.

When you learn how fiercely loyal the Chamorros stayed to us even as they were being abused or killed by the Japanese to force them to change culturally, it was worth every bit and then some. We fought this battle to free our fellow Americans (every living Chamorro received US Citizenship after the war IIRC).
