This introductory video gives viewers some details about the lead-up to the Battle of Leyte Gulf, which took place in the Philippines from October 23-26, 1944. This 11-part video series explores the Battle of Leyte Gulf in-depth, using accounts from veterans who fought that battle. Many of the veterans who fought at Leyte Gulf have since passed on, but before they died, they left behind vivid accounts of their experiences. In this video series, voice actors read aloud their words to bring their experiences back to life. From them, we can learn what it was like to have witnessed one of the largest naval battles in world history.
All videos are researched, written, and produced by staff and volunteers at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

I watched this first video and then watched the rest of the series. Many details I have not seen elsewhere on this battle and how it affected other plans like hitting Formosa. The observations about Admiral Halsey's decision to take all his ships and chase the aircraft carriers we very informative. I appreciated the references to other authors who commented on this move. Other videos simply say that he had standing orders to go after the carriers if there was an opportunity. Your video included the message of "where is the task force, the world wants to know". I had never heard of that before and the affects it had on the Admiral. Thank you for this series and well done.

Actually Adm. Nimitz did not favor the Formosa Route but he argued it loyally for his boss Adm. King who did favor it. Adm. Nimitz leaned toward the Philippines and of course the Iwo-Okinawa route and this came out in the questions by Pres. Roosevelt. Pres. Roosevelt gave tacit approval for the Philippines but did not formally approve it for months which caused Gen. MacArthur no end of consternation. Pres. Roosevelt generally got what he wanted, when he wanted it and played Gen. MacArthur with thinly worded approvals. See Ian. C. Tolls Pacific Trilogy.

MacArthur didn't give a damn about the millions of Filipinos or much of a damned about abandoned Americans, Filipino and British troops he left at Corregidor. What he really cared about was his legacy as a loser. We can't have that staining the MacArthur name or his famous corn cob pipe. Strategically, we could have skipped the island-hopping campaign and gone straight to Formosa. Had we done that the Japanese would have been forced to retreat to their home Islands to defend them. We went into the Philippines so MacArthur could justify his childish splashy parade through the water so he could announce he has returned .
