By 10:30 A.M. on October 25, 1944, RADM Clifton Sprague’s task group-Taffy 3-had managed to escape the clutches of VADM Takeo Kurita’s Center Force. Sprague had lost one of his escort carriers, two of his destroyers, and one of his destroyer-escorts. Over 1,100 American sailors had died, but Kurita’s fleet had turned around. The U.S. Navy had protected Leyte Gulf. The liberation of the Philippines could proceed. However, the Japanese still had one more ace up their sleeve. They had one more weapon to drive the 7th Fleet from the shores of Leyte-and it was particularly devastating. Learn about the kamikaze attack on USS St. Lo in part 10 of our Leyte Gulf video series.
This 11-part video series explores the Battle of Leyte Gulf in-depth, using accounts from veterans who fought that battle. Many of the veterans who fought at Leyte Gulf have since passed on, but before they died, they left behind vivid accounts of their experiences. In this video series, voice actors read aloud their words to bring their experiences back to life. From them, we can learn what it was like to have witnessed one of the largest naval battles in world history.
All videos are researched, written, and produced by staff and volunteers at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

My Great Grandfather was on the USS Saint Lo. He survived with terrible burns from the fire. I never got to meet him but I’ve always longed to know his story.

My great uncle was Captain Francis J. Mckenna. Leicester MA, born in 1898. I have the letter from the navy awarding him the Navy Cross.

My great uncle, JW Davenport, was killed by the Kamikaze that hit the Santee. You are the FIRST person , I’ve heard to say that the Santee was the first hit. THANK YOU!!!!! No one ever mentions it.

There was a great man john ibe who found me to design and build the taffy 3 memorial in san diego. He survived the st lo and was the quarterback for the 3 memorial and bob hope memorial.....we got him to be 1 of the bronze sailor's watching bob hope. Great guy. He told me his experiences i was humbled. The dedicatioh of those men to their fallen mates was beyond belief. God bless them. I consider myself lucky to have met them.

My grandfather was on the St.Lo. Alvin Sharp F2C...he never forgot how the "Tin cans saved our baby flatops.." Neither will I nor will my children or my grandchildren.

My Father was a Signalman aboard the USS St. Lo. He was 19 years old when she was sunk in October of 1944. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

A very good account. The Japanese did not have the same success against British aircraft carriers when they finally ventured out into the Pacific because they had armoured flightdecks as opposed to wooden ones. That fact saved many lives on the British carriers in 1945.

Yes, the armored decks were a good design choice in the long run. Any design choice like that has drawbacks, higher center of gravity, slower, heavier, harder to repair but, in the end, it was probably worth it. Hard for a designer to see 10 years in the future and imagine the enemy intentionally crashing a plane into the deck.
