That was one of many battles and invasion attempts by Dutch in Macau. In fact. We the Macanese (half Portuguese and half Chinese plus the Portuguese community (not the Chinese one unfortunately) had just celebrated the 400th victory anniversary in Macau (it was supposed to be held in 2022 and due to Covid It was postponed to June 24th 2023. Portugal was the underdog, only after the the Great Lisbon Earthquake, when Lisbon was one of the Richiest cities in Europe. At the Time, far bigger than Madrid. But after the Disaster, all fell apart. In the 1400's,1500's1600's, Portugal and Spain were the Alpha Dogs of all European Nations. You dont have the first global Empire, being an underdog. Dont forget that the Brittish only had a colonie in China, 300 years after the Portuguese first got there. 300 hundred years. Its a long Time. The Portuguese were the first European Power to have colonies in Índia ( the Brittish only after 250 years) , and the Last ones to leave. And the first Europeans to get to Japan, and Founded the citie Port of Nagasaki. Not bad at all for a small countrie. Very brave man, and a very Brave Nation, indeed.

All the resources left ( the Gold that was coming from Brazil) weren't enough to rebuild the City and the rest of the country in a proper way. It's truly impressive that 400 years ago small nations like Portugal and Holland were fighting and projecting power with their navies on the other side of the world, but particularly Portugal since it was the first nation doing it, and actually had to fight the Ottoman empire before that. Portugal vs Dutch was the first Global War in history, fought in Asia, Africa, Europe and Americas and Portugal won it! The Dutch started defeating Portugal in Asia, when Portugal was ruled by Spain, by dynastic reazons from 1580 to 1640, but the war followed in Angola, where Portugal defeated the Dutch and the most important wars of all, it was the war for mighty Brazil, where Portugal total defeated the Dutch! It is strange why for so many time the Dutch vs Portugal was told just with the battles in Asia, where the Dutch won...

Why many consider it as Dutch victory? Because the Portuguese lost their golden geese in the Oriental World market that they had monopolized for decades towards the European market, the main reason of their overall exploration and colonization, they had lost their important points of freitoria, harbor, and colony settlement in India, Ceylon, Indonesia, East Africa, and Persian Gulf to not just the Dutch, but later on to British, France, native feudal warlord, and Muscat sultanate.
@MrJovision

@@williemherbert1456 On those times, the price of spices decreased a lot and Portugal turned to Brazil and to sugar and later to gold, so the Portuguese king had more gold than all other europeans kings together. When in the rest of Europe people counted gold in grams, Portugal counted it in tons! But that is the part of history, that Jews and protestants dont like to talk about it,,,
@williemherbert1456
@williemherbert1456 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrJovision Yes the spice price would fall eventually, in the late 18th century, and that's when VOC actually being dissolved, but not at the 16th century when proven still to be godly profitable, and it's not just mere spices, but also textile, gems, dyes, cotton, coffee, tea, porcelain, and then the large number of potential customer beside the European consumer market. Brazil could be said just mere cash crop colony, and even that still not as profitable as Cuba and Haiti since the geography in Brazil made goods & raw material distribution and transportation to be really hard, the margin of contour line between the coastal area and then arable interior used as plantation is really huge, and that's why Brazil always in expectation to be world great power, but never make it to the eventuality. And then the gold rush in Minas Geraes, still not as influential as the silver deposit in Rio de La Plata, to be used by Portugal in determining the exchange power that much, although still decent enough. And again, the first reason the Portuguese trying to set sail and explore to the deep sea is in search of the Spice Island and Oriental market as their venture primary goal, because Ottoman sealed off European traders from the Eastern goods with embargo. That said, you're right that at the end keeping the ownership of Brazil by Portugal is still worth it since the eventual rise of cocoa and sugar price in the market, alongside the woods there too later on.

It was the second largest army in Europe during 1675-1713 and it even had to help Portugal during the war of Spanish Succession. The Portuguese fought well against the Dutch but their most valuable trade networks were lost. Its funny how the Portuguese try to spin this obvious loss as a win. Very interesting video, well done! However, if I may just add one thing; it is important to note that at the beginning of the 16th century Portugal was everything but an underdog, and was considered a major power, both in terms of its navy and artillery, which was considered the best in the world from 1480 - 1550, Portugal's peak (having a much more powerful navy than England, the Netherlands and France at that point.) You don't build a global empire by being an "underdog". It was only in the 17th century that its naval power started to decrease and be overtaken as a result of the Iberian Union, which led its empire in Asia to become neglected, first by the Dutch, and then later by the English (France was never really a major naval power).

The local Portuguese land owners took matters in their own hands and fought against the Dutch. When they won Portugal had to pay damages to the Dutch. The expulsion of the Dutch from Pernambuco took 24 years and had important consequences, like the first wave of Jewish migration to NY. Worth telling story.

I think the way that made possible for Portugal to hold on to such a big empire for so long, being a small country and with so limited armed forces, was shown in this video: the sympathy won on local indigenous populations, the feeling of being Portuguese shared by Asian, African, South American natives on Portuguese ground. It's the reason why the dutch, for instance, were defeated in Brasil, África, and to less extent, Asia. It was locals, no matter their skin colour, under Portuguese flag defending against Dutch, Spanish, French or even English. Also it was probably the motive to the fact that Portugal was the last European country to hold on to it's colonial Empire, witch is odd, being such a small one and so poor in resources, and later, in technology. Still today, there's people in the ex-colonies now independent countries by their own right, that remember Portuguese rule with friendship and "saudade" (look it up). Except for Brasil, brasilians just want their gold back... 😂 Anyway, thanks for the video, hope you make some more on Portuguese history. Cheers.

Small detail: Between 1580 and 1640 the sovereigns of Portugal were the kings of Spain. Only the fact that the administration of Macau had not been taken over by the Spaniards explain the fact that the here living Portuguese and others here established were the protagonists in this event celebrated today. The reason why the city was later named “the loyal city of Macau” was because Macau was probably the only place in the world at the time where the Portuguese flag stayed raised, and where one major incident have been successfully fought in the name of Portugal.

Hi Henry. I couldn't find any information on this. So I'll just give my personal opinion. The Dutch fleet was pretty damaged in this battle. By the time they could regather and mount another attack, the Portuguese and Spanish would've reinforced defences. Also, the battle probably highlighted that taking Macau would need a lot more men. Remember that the Spanish had a base in Manilla. The Dutch would have to reinforce from much further away.

I repeat here what I said in a reply to a certain arrogant Dutch, arrogance is a kind of trade mark of them: - that's why today your language "is" one of the principal of planet Earth, "being spoken" from Flanders "to Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, many Atlantic islands, East Timor"... etc. Try to be not too much fussy. It's grotesque. In the xvii century the essential commercial interest turned to the Atlantic trade, that's why a country with a tiny population like Portugal, preferred to invest all forces in Brazil, Angola, St. Tomé and Cabo Verde. That allowed to expel - with the enthusiastic help of the black slaves and Brazilian Indian tribes - the Dutch invaders from the mentioned territories in exactly the same period that Portugal was fighting with Spain for the recover of the independence. It was not quite easy as you easily can understand. More, the Dutch were deeply distasted from South America to Africa, India and China for their arrogance, greed and inhumanity. They dare to publish panfleto propaganda distributed by all Europe justifying their extermination war against the Portuguese. By their words, "the Portuguese are infamous and damned, they inbreed with animals". Animals? Here they are: Africans, Amerindians, asians of all regions like Ceylon, Burma, Siam, Malacca, China, Japan, Java, Timor. To the Batavian they were not humans, just animals, guess why most of the Dutch traders established in West Pacific learned how to speak Portuguese, even some of the governors sent by Amsterdam to Batavia. Because was the connection language in the vast area since the xvith century. Today, XXIst century, how many independent countries have the Dutch language as oficial idiom? Next 15 decades from 160 were the turn of the English to become by far superior in commercial and militar navy, finishing to capture from the Dutch the Cape, Ceylon, many Caribbean islands, New York place, all India and even Malacca.
