Probably aghast. The primary agenda for the Japanese during WW2 was expansion of pacific control, which only the Navy could do.

I think they don't even know what happen to Midway since the govt make the result as classified and only several high rank officer know this. This make the army general who defend their island have made wrong strategy since they think the navy still have strong naval power that could support them.

The Navy didn't tell anyone they lost 4 carriers they said they were only damaged.

They weren’t near each other though... Yorktown survivors were picked up by the support ships of Task Force 17. Enterprise and Hornet were with TF-16 further away.

It wasn't even true for the Pacific. The entire U.S. pacific fleet did not go to Midway, there were two battleships and numerous cruisers, destroyers and subs protecting Hawaii. The Saratoga arrived in Hawaii the first fay of battle at Midway after re-fit and was under way toward Midway the next day with replenishment planes for the Enterprise and Hornet as well as its own complement. To say the Midway force was all that was left of the U.S. Navy was patently false, it wasn't nearly the total of the Pacific fleet alone, much less entire Navy.

Arbeedubya None of that would have really mattered if the IJN decided to bring in a 5th carrier the Zuikaku and then use the two smaller aircraft carriers the Ryūhō and Jun’yō that they sent to the Aleutians. This would have added in an additional 150 aircraft. They would had also added in 3 cruisers and 5 destroyers. Imagine this strike force heading south directly where the US carriers were. The IJN could have also brought in more battleships instead of hanging back and bombard Midway island and thus would have eliminated the need for so many land based bombers.

But that’s not how you allocate resources, especially when your enemy is stretched thin as it is. They seriously miscalculated the position of the American carriers, but they thought they’d be facing two at most, and that’s if they didn’t go after the bait when they bombed Dutch Harbor.

If you had 30 guys in your gang and your opponent had 5 (including their leader at the time)...you would "allocate" your resources by only sending 5 or 6 guys? I would bring all 30 if I knew it meant it would eliminate their leader. The IJN had a 7-0 battleship advantage but never did make use of any of this advantage. The IJN used 2 battleships in Midway and they were used more for anti aircraft attack which was really not their specialty either. Would have been interesting if 5 battleships went to Midway and shelled the island after the initial bombing run. In reality...none of the other areas matter as a priority so long as the IJN eliminated the US carriers. So the IJN simply should have thrown the majority of their vessels into this attack. They should have even went vessel to vessel. There is no way the USN could have kept up with the sheer numbers. "Wounding" the US carriers where they could only to 15-20 would have ensured that they couldn't outrun the faster IJN vessels. The USN simply didn't have enough planes to deal with so many enemy vessels during Midway. IJN should have brought the Zuikaku and not attack the Aleutians. This has nothing to do with hindsight. It's simply a matter of sound strategy when you have such an overwhelming advantage in vessels.

If I have a gang of 30 and I'm facing 5, I don't need to bring 30 when I can have them out, contributing in other ways. Allocating 100% of your resources at one target at a time is a poor strategy. Why did the Americans divide their forces into an island hopping campaign as well as liberating the Philippines? That's the exact same strategy.

A pretty big force was sent to the Aleutians either. You really didn't answer my point either related to "allocating" 30 guys to fight 5. it's kind of like this also....your battleships are like bats but you heard 2 of 5 guys had guns but no bats so you decided to have your 10 guys or whatever without bats. Face it. The IJN failed to utilize the assets they had an advantage in.

That's one of the reasons that the Japanese decided a second strike on the base was needed, which ended up causing all sorts of problems for Nagumo. Anyhow, the orphaned Yorktown planes had options. They could have gone to Midway, of course, but the decks of Enterprise were probably closer by that point. Plus it would be easier to participate in the counter-attack if they remained with the fleet - which they did. Fourteen Yorktown dive bombers joined the attack that resulted in the destruction of Hiryū, the remaining Japanese fleet carrier in the battle.

Midway was cratered the only place to land was Big E or in the ocean.

At the end of Kantai, it turned out the way Yamamoto planned it. But the General Staff had taken 3 carriers to clear the way for the Army to take Port Moresby, and they were all too damaged to go with him. Same for the northern carrier that was there as bait, instead of being with him at Midway. Consider what would have happened if the IJN had had only two more carriers there......

James Luckhurst good points. It seems though the US knew the IJN was going to attack Midway but they didn’t know exactly from where. I would agree that if the IJN brought their battleships and started to shell Midway the outcome may have been different. It would have been very tempting for the US planes to attack the IJN battleships.

On average. Some carried a few more, some a few less. If memory serves, Akagi's airgroup was the largest at 68. Notice, though, the American carriers had more aircraft per carrier, at 73 each, on average. However, only Enterprise carried a full airgroup (about 80 aircraft).

I Made Aditya Wijaya to be more precise: 1. Akagi and Kaga 91 planes each capacity. 2. Soryu and Hiryu 72 and 73 plane capacity. 3. Zuikaku and Shokaku 82 plane capacity. For Midway, they definitely brought less for each of the 4 carriers and of course they didn’t bring their two other carriers
