+Montemayor get used to it! I found you a few hours ago, subbed right away and there's already 300 more subs since I started watching! You have YTs algorithm on your side, people are actually going to get your vids thrown in their face... When they watch them... They're going to like them, they're solid videos, good info, easy to understand and follow, very helpful use of graphics to show movement... But then they're going to want more... I hope you decide it's worth the effort and try to grow the channel, and profit too, it's ok to make a buck, especially when you earn it with the work you do, or content you release. Like many others that will soon follow, I hope for more content soon!

To Montemayor, Thank you for making these splendid videos; I've just watched a few but plan to watch the rest soon. They are factual, and to the point without being too vague or bogged down with unnecessary commentary or details. Your choice of diction is professional and your delivery clear. A pleasure to watch; I can almost see the regiments advancing here as if I was watching Gods and Generals or Gettysburg again. It's always nice to find another channel worth subscribing to with quality content that is accessible but still interesting. I appreciate the lack of swearing or blaspheming too since I could show this in one of my classrooms without having to worry. Sadly, this isn't often the case with history channels on KZfaq. I always enjoy learning more about U.S. military history and military history in general so if you enjoy making these videos you've got an audience of at least one. All the best from the Great White North! Sincerely, Kyle of Canada -Joking- Post Script - While I would normally be opposed to the U.S. policy of manifest destiny, if it meant that we could have Trump depose our current prime minister and replace him with someone more sane, I'd have a really hard time having any qualms with it.

I'm from Monterrey, amigo, and I have to say you did an amazing work. Actually, I live just some blocks near Bishop Palace (Obispado) and I'm sure Monterrey was THE place to stop american forces because of its numerous hills, is a natural fortress indeed. Poorly mexican strategy wasted a key opportunity. By the way, as far as I know, the word 'gringo' was born just here in the Battle of Monterrey, I guess because of the green uniforms of the americans. Well, thanks again for this video.
@tyrannicfool2503
@tyrannicfool2503 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, Monterrey really was a reliable defensive position during the war, but I’m from the mind that maybe rather than stopping then it could have been put to better use if it was used with the intention to bleed the northern forces, only fight until an organized retreat could be ordered.

It is also said in from the California Republic perspective that the American soldiers and Californiano/Tejano militias would ask the Mexican locals "Where did the Greens Go?" They referred to the Mexican soldiers who were loyal to Santa Ana as Greens.

Sorry. Gringo was invented in Cuba. A Cuban Spanish corruption of what they thought they heard the Americans saying. You see, at night the Americans would loudly sing a popular song, "Green Grow the Lilacs". Cubans then called them "gringos".

Love the video. I think I have two corrections to offer. At 8:50 when the Texas Rangers countered the Mexican Cavalry charge on Worth's Division you said that 100 casualties were Rajeev by the Americans but only 1 from friendly fire by the Texans. Did you mean that of the 10p casualties suffered by the Americans due to the Mexican cavalry charge the Texas Rangers emerged almost completely unscathed? Or that the Mexicans suffered 100:1 casualties? At 11:30 you said that Worth's Division would attack Monterrey from the South and East while the 1st and 3rd Division would attack from the North. I believe you meant that the 2nd Division would attack from the South and West. Excellent content overall as usual. Can't wait to watch the Battle of Buena Vista next.

Interesting, during the making of the video that is what i also thought. the problem i see with the Mexican forces was that they were not well trained and maneuverable at all. to march hundreds of men in formation and maintain that cohesion takes a lot of training and time. Their forces were very static, that's why Taylor actually split his force in two right in front of them! he knew they would stay put.

The Americans left their own supply lines dangerously exposed, this could have gone wrong very quickly had the Mexican general been an active defender. He likely didn't trust his troops to hold their own out in the open, perhaps he was playing for time waiting for reinforcements and chose to hold a strong defensive perimeter in the city.

Lee was Taylor's primary strategists and Grant was in charge and implementing the attacks of a couple of citadels in the main part of Monterrey. It's amazing how Zachary Taylor used maneuver and deception to win the Battle of Monterrey, as he successfully won against a numerically superior opponent. This engagement also highlights the importance that supply lines have upon engagements, as Zachary Taylor used his enemy's weak defense of the Saltillo Road against them. Arguably, such generalship should mark Taylor as one of the best American generals.

Matthew Kuchinski I disagree, it was poor leadership. Only his opponents mistakes and a degree of luck won him the battle.

Now I think in retrospect, you are indeed correct. It seems more luck than skill when reconsidering Monterrey. I think it was Taylor's pre-battle plan that was brilliant, but as always, events changed the strategy.

Look, Taylor won against a larger army than his, and that victory is all his. It's just the sheer incompetence of De Ampudia pisses me off way more than it should

Im from Monterrey and I love this battle bc made us a 3rd time-heroic city and it’s the most industrialize area and I can find a lot of information in local libraries from the local government and the University of the Nuevo León state, I just wanted to see this from the American perspective on social media, the fort you mention as “independence” it is actually the “Obispado” if I’m not mistaking, we put hell of a fight in here, even the Irish deserted from us and came to help due to their catholic ties 😂

@6:34 So you send one regiment after another until the defenders run out of ammunition. I believe this would later be known as the Zap Brannigan strategy.

Ulysses S Grant served under Zachary Taylor and liked the way Taylor mixed with lower level grunts and looked like them too. Grant would be that way as the Civil War general who sometimes looked like a muddy private.

That's how it went down, quite a maul, yeah we think alike maybe. The point on the pistol over at close quarters, keeping an open mind about and the wisdom of not cavalry in front of maybe canister shot could have influenced the manouvers near Independence hill. Putting cannon on hills seems the Mexicans error, maybe they had longer range barrage in mind, again that's how they deployed. Excellent thanks enjoyed lots and your evaluation of the strategy. The surrender should have maybe been offered earlier but no last stand . They got a good bargain in the surrender being an old tactic allowing a defeated enemy to withdraw.

I think this battle speaks well of General Worth and his division, as he was able to use the Mexican's defensive positions against them, used small unit tactics to overcome the two hills that were necessary for the Mexicans to protect their supplies, and he used deception to keep his casualties at a minimum cost.

@5:08 - "And the maze like streets caused the units to be separated and unable to coordinate." Are we not looking at a perfect grid of streets going N/S & E/W? Why have a map if it doesn't correlate to reality?

It was actually rather common to allow surrendering (agree to withdraw) troops to retain their firearms. Especially when the attacking group respected the other group as soldiers.
