Gothmog was the lieutenant of the witch king of angmar, notably taking the western side of osgiliath and leading the ground troops in the battle of the pelennor Just like the grond that was present in the battle, both pay homage to an age when things favored the ruinous powers

Sauron liked to pay homage to his master Morgoth (Grond & Gothmog) or maybe Tolkien just ran out of cool names or was fatigued by the time he got to ROTK. Still think Gothmog in LOTR should have been a huge Troll to give hime some street credibility not some Orc with Syphylis.
