The Battle of Sangshak: 19 to 26 March 1944
With Keith Hathaway
Part of Footsteps in the Pacific Week on WW2TV
• Footsteps in the Pacif...
The Battle of Shangshak took place in Manipur in the forested and mountainous frontier area between India and Burma in March 1944. The Japanese drove a parachute brigade (fighting as infantry) of the British Indian Army from its positions with heavy casualties, but suffered heavy casualties themselves. The delay imposed on the Japanese by the battle allowed British and Indian reinforcements to reach the vital position at Kohima before the Japanese.
Our guest Keith Hathaway graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a degree in history. I served 31 years in the Massachusetts Army National Guard. Serving in several units within the State retiring as a First Sergeant (OR8). Including a 5 year term as a Staff NCO in the 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade "26th Yankee Brigade". Currently working for a Major Financial Institution in Boston Massachusetts

An excellent presentation by Keith. It is great to see a US military historian interested in the Commonwealth forces during World War 2. I hope Keith comes back on WW2TV soon.

Re: air transport of troops and their equipment from the Arakan front to Imphal, Robert Farquharson's book "For Your Tomorrow" (pg. 187) indicates that the airlift of the division was conducted over a period of nine days by 20 Commandos (C-46) which had been temporarily taken from the Hump route (presumably all USAAF) and 25 Dakotas (C-47) (presumably largely or entirely RAF) which completed a total of 758 sorties.

Always great watching shows on the Pacific theatre. I got James Holland Burma '44 at We Have Ways, and it's jumped to the top of my "to read" pile.

The three options that slim has at the beginning, with the attack, hold, or pull back. Pulling back to draw out the Japanese supply lines is very reminiscent of how the chinese had won their few victories over japan. Slim was famously the only allied general in 1942 who bothered to ask the Chinese for advice on how to fight and win against japan.

This is fascinating. I am getting so many vibes from Kohima/Imphal, Dien Bien Phu (?), and Khe Sahn. This was a battle that projected the future combats that would shape the Indo-China world for the next eight decades. Very well done. Also, the British 14th Army comes off very well in professionalism and elan as an elite force.

2nd Division 14th Army were 2nd Division BEF in 1940, and as such were the division sacrificed to make operation Dynamo feasible, British rearguard at Dunkirk, holding off 2 armoured divisions and the SS Tottenkompf. My gt uncle served in 1st bn Royal Berkshires, Dunkirk to Mandalay.

Loved this. I do believe he meant the "type 41 mountain gun" not the type 31. Small mistake but one I feel needed to be corrected.

Invasion of India by Japan was effectively defeated in these early battles. They had no concept of massive Indian manpower and air transport ability and helped in collapse of Japanese rule in Burma within a year

Another 'curveball' out of nowhere. I know little(actually nada) about this part of WW2. So cool to learn about what is basically alien territory to almost all U.S. WW2 hobbyists.

On the cover of Michael Hickey's book The Unforgettable Army it states the forward is written by "Colonel The Viscount Slim OBE, DL" which I found curious, Slim was far senior than a colonel. Can anyone explain?

Where did you get the information about there being an ancient volcano in the area? Obsidian? I know there is coal in the area, but no igneous rocks for hundreds of km

@@WW2TV I researched the area and it is near the ophiolite belt. Ophiolites are basically oceanic crust that has been thrust upwards as a result of plate tectonic collision. It can be very dark and confused with obsidian. It is actually an interesting piece of geologic information, as I am working the region.
