The Battle of Santa Cruz, Part 1: Introduction

The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, or "Bloody Santa Cruz," took place on October 26, 1942. Although the Battle of Santa Cruz is largely forgotten today, it was one of the epic clashes of the Pacific War, involving two aircraft carrier fleets that engaged each other from afar. This battle determined if the U.S. Navy would reclaim the South Pacific. Although scholars have sometimes described it as a tactical defeat for the United States Navy, its long-term consequences produced a strategic victory, as it drove the Japanese carrier force back into hiding and enabled the Allied conquest of Guadalcanal, the only major American offensive in the Pacific in the year 1942.
In this seven-part video series, learn about the Battle of Santa Cruz through the first-person accounts of Sailors who fought in this battle. All videos are written, directed, and produced by staff and volunteers at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

My dad Parks Blaine Baker survived the battle of Santa Cruz. He left the States the first of August 1942 on the Porter , then in the battle of Santa Cruz ( he spelled it Cruse ) the Porter was sunk, he went then to New Calidonia , he stayed there one week and was put on another destroyer: The USS Barton, He wrote his family living in Tennessee a letter while on the Barton , but he wrote “ you must have Not got it . He continues his hospital stay letter that he went to Guadalcanal and how his ship USS Barton was torpedoed. He wrote they were with the San Francisco, a cruiser were they had a torpedo plane attack one day , there were 26 planes in all , were all of them were shot down. The USS Barton went up in flames and sank within 40 seconds. He was up on the highest part of the USS Barton stationed as skye lookout where he says : “ I got a good view of the battle until we were hit, you talk about excitement I seen some that night. I could see the big red balls of fire coming through the air straight at me , then after we were hit , I was knocked out cold , and when I came to I was in the water without a life jacket. The ship had already sunk , and when I tried to raise my leg I found that it was broken. And I swam until I had just about give out and just about ready to go down I remember thinking about just sucking in a big breath of water and getting it over with, yes I really believed that I was a goner, then with all the luck in the world a life jacket came floating up to me and was heaven to catch hold of that life jacket , then after I had rested a little I heard some boys talking not so far away. So I yelled at them and they answered me. They were on a raft , I swam to them , and we were picked up the next day. Well I later got on another ship and was torpedoed again and me with a broken leg , we abandoned ship and went to Guadalcanal, and I flew away from there the next day by plane.”

Fleet at Flood Tide is a great book, all James Hornfischer's books are outstanding history.

@@HRNavalMuseum Let me know if I can help on your next video. My father had written about 6-7 pages on this battle. He describes the regrouping of Hornet's squadrons after Midway, his bombing run on the Shokaku, fighting his way back to the Hornet, then landing on the Enterprise with his wounded gunner. dk
