In part 5 of our 7-part Battle of Santa Cruz series, we focus on the Japanese airstrike on USS Hornet during the morning of October 26, 1942. The Japanese airstrike crippled Hornet. By 9:25am, the attack was over, and the surviving Japanese planes were on their way back to their carriers. With fires raging, no power, and a terrible list, Hornet was dead in the water. In this video, hear the experiences of 19-year-old sailor Richard Nowatski as he remembered this attack.
All videos are written, produced, and directed by staff and volunteers at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

Excellent video- well presented. I know the story of the Hornet from the day she was launched until the day she was lost- from my grandfather who was a Motor Machinist Mate on her. He survived to fight another day on the USS Princeton, until she too was lost- ironically almost 2 years to the day the Hornet was lost. He survived that and finished the war as a Tug Boat Master at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA. He told me the Navy musta thought he was jinxed on carriers so let him have a Tug instead! Anyway, thank you for a great tribute to a great ship. Just FYI to add: during the second attack, many men that were responsible to send ammo up from below decks to the Gun Tubs like the sailor in this story is telling about were killed in the first attack, so all available personnel were now passing ammo furiously topside. One of them was the ship's Chaplain. When the ship's Executive Officer saw him, he asked "Father, shouldn't you be praying?" and the Chaplain quipped back "I AM- PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE AMMUNITION!". This became sort of a battle cry for the crew during the rest of the attacks.

You deserve many more views. Your series of videos are excellent, and the narration is top notch. The entire Guadalcanal campaign is fascinating and unknown by so many. Thank you for making these.

Doesn't sound like we had mostly functional torpedos yet but the Japanese "Long Lances" obviously worked. Don't know if Hornet was more of a loss than the Cruisers at Savo Island seeing how the Essex class carriers would be coming off the ways soon. But I sure am glad that Mikawa didn't decide to go after our transports there or we would have still been in defense mode by the time this battle took place and this would not have been the last of the first rate IJN pilots without the attrition of Guadalcanal. Young people today tend to take our dominance for granted but this Pacific war with Japan was very hard fought even after Midway.
