This is right up my alley, folks! This era totally fascinates me, and has captured my heart. as well. I think it's criminally neglected in popular military history, so this overview made me very happy to stumble upon. Bravo, folks! Viva la Republica!

I just got into the spanish civil war a week ago and flooded myself with books and videos. This is great! Thanks! Please have him back to talk on the further continuation of the war after this battle until early 1939 when it all ended. I love his presentation with maps and his words. It was very vivid! Great show Paul and a great help in my new conquest to understand this war and how it went and why. Grüße

Congratulations on allowing us to view another real treat, albeit on ( yet another ) extremely tragic chapter of European history. If anyone is at all interested in reading on a regime that scarcely got away with being held to account for its periods of very comfy relations with Berlin and Rome, anything by Paul Preston ( if you don’t do your back in lifting up his door stopper tome on Franco ),..and, the ‘ Civil War within the Civil War ‘ , on the Republican Left ‘ side ‘ , George Orwell’s ‘ Homage to Catalonia ‘. Fascinatingly, Kim Philby was hanging around on the ‘ Nationalist ‘ side, ostensibly on behalf of ‘ The Times ‘, doing his utmost, Sorge-style, to pose as a fascist, on behalf of the NKVD.

Heartily agree with the Paul Preston book recommendations! One of his books I'd highlight as essential reading is 'The Spanish Holocaust' by him. It deals with the atrocities of the SCW as well as the repression in its wake. Grim facts but a crucial 'eyeopener'.

I believe this 'pre-war' stuff is very relevant to the 'Main Event'. Great for you to give it your usual excellent coverage. Perhaps something about the Second Sino-Japanese War or the Soviet-Japanese border conflicts (Khalkhin Gol) when you have the time? Its all (sort of) related to WWII. Just because we're Brits and don't believe the war started until we got involved doesn't mean these topics aren't relevant or shouldn't be covered. Well, in my opinion anyhow.

Fantastic presentation on the subject. I can't wait to see the next segment. Why did the Italians used tankettes? See (Italian Tanks from 1915 to 1945 (WW1 and WW2) by jmantime. Could we have segment on the Ariete and the Centauro Tank Divisions in the North African Campaign?

I wish I had been able to view this live, but alas I had to work at the time of the livestream. This was a great way to kick of Armoured Actions Week! I really appreciated Pete's expertise and loved his knowledge of the Spanish language, of which I am able to speak conversationally. His pronunciation of the names of people and places in the Castilian style was impressive. I enjoyed the discussion of the "take aways" especially. One aspect I think that the Germans must have realized more than any of the other nations involved was that all of the parts of the armoured force must be mobile. Perhaps some, such as Guderian may have already been thinking along these lines, but perhaps this was highlighted as a lesson learned. Can anyone elaborate? Once again, good work. I am trying to spread the word among my circle about WW2TV Paul.

I agree with your point about the Germans. They were looking at mobile warfare, positing that if you're going to use tanks en masse effectively, then the infantry, artillery, engineers & other units that accompany the tanks need to be mobile and preferably armoured too. Hence their looking at the SCW & concluding that this wasn't how a future European war would be fought. And for WW2, they were right.
