Agreed, Its a bit of a shame how the show barely lets that shine through: Robb was a brilliant commander and leader (militairy then, not political :P) who was adored by his Lords and soldiers, for within a féw battles, he had the mighty Lannister army, scattered, half-decimated, and on the run.
@davidjones5333
@davidjones5333 5 жыл бұрын
@@thegreenreaper6660 Yeah the Lannisters had 3 armies all around 20,000 in strength. Robb destroys 2 of them and has the final force under Tywin pinned defensively at Harrenhal. If Stannis and Renley weren't such fuck wits the war would have been over by book 2.

You forgot to add that the only reason Jaime didn't succeed in killing Robb is because he got his sword lodged in the head of one of the karstark sons. This is arguably his most badass moment despite him being captured shows just how dangerous he is and completely without fear

Imagine if the producers had the budget to make this battle happen in the show. Seeing Jaime go all Darth Vader and start cutting down Robb's guard could have had the potential of being the best scene in that season. That entire battle scene could have had a Gladiator essence to it if they could have afforded it. Also, great analysis my guy that was some awesome content! You should analyze fights like the batttle of the trident, battle of the bells, etc.
@AnalysisofThrones

Agreed would have been awesome to see this battle. Is a great display of tactics on Robbs part, and would show how much of a badass Jaime is. I get they couldn't afford it, but still sad it wasnt included. They could have even done what was in the books with you just seeing the pre battle set up with Cat, had them charge and then just hear the majority of the battle, with little clips of fighting sewed in. Wouldnt have cost as much as a full fight, but still would have been a tense way to convey what was happening

Ricky YUP, George RR Martin explicitly made it clear, Jaime is the greatest swordsman of his generation, no mountain, no champions could take him, show did a poor job of showing this, even a malnourished and chained Jaime scared brienne enough to apply her full effort to put him down. He toyed with Ned. Only Sword of the fuckin morning Ser Arthur Fuckin Dayne, Jaime's mentor and idol figure could undoubtedly beat him and Barriston the Bold in his prime would have a good chance against him. What's frustrating is that tywin never really appreciated his son's Goat status and saw him as misguided as in he should have focused more on politics smh

Rob shouldn't have killed Karstark. Instead he should have publicly challenged him, reminding him of the oath he took when he named Rob king of the north. He shouldv'e presented him with a choice in front of all the forces of the north. He could renounce Rob as king thereby breaking his oath, and would be sent back to Karhold with the title oathbreaker and deserter. Or he could uphold his oath, announce that he would respect Rob's authority as king, pledge the karstark forces to Rob and accept any punishment Rob sees fit. Rob should then exile him to the wall or declare him unfit to serve. I'm willing to bet, that if Karstark chooses to break his oath, most of the karstark forces would abandon him and stay with Rob for fear of being label deserter. A similar situation would likely occur if Karstark upholds his oath and Rob chooses to exile or even kill him. This is of course, banking on the assumption that north men fear dishonor more than death, which isn't always true.
@blackdragon6
@blackdragon6 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe, one thing about this show is that it goes out of it's way to show oaths, and honor doesn't mean what they claim. So yeah, *MAYBE* the karstarks would still support Robb after he went through with your idea. But honestly I'm not sure.

The show makes Jon an ABSOLUTE shit commander but in reality he's probably just as gifted as Rob. He defended the wall successfully against somewhere from 20,000 to 100,000 wildlings, including giants and mammoths, against a mere 100 (or less) black brothers. He proved to be incredibly resourceful and was able to maximize the talents of those around him.

It's quite telling that in the Loot Train attack Jaime pulls the exact same move when he sees that the Dothraki have slaughtered most of the Lannister forces and Dany is on the ground with Drogon (after getting hit by Qyburn's scorpion via Bronn). He tried to charge at Dany and "cut the head of the snake" (or in this case, dragon).

It's almost as if it's his go-to move when all else fails. He does it so reflexively that he may not be aware of how unlikely it is to succeed. I remember Tyrion's reaction when it happened during the Loot Train ambush. Watching from a distance, he said, "don't do it you fool." This can mean that either Jaime does it frequently enough that his brother recognized immediately what his next move would be, thereby supporting your observation and the hypothesis that it's his go-to move. It may just be instinct for him, but I am curious to know whether it's in fact his instinct or a trained response. I appreciate this comment highlighting that he in fact tried the same thing against Daenerys. Also, sorry for such a late reply but I found this discussion interesting.

The series should have filmed this battle or at least a toned down version of it. It would not have been that expensive and would have developed the characters much more. It would have explained Lord Karstark's anger and showed that Robb made a good move. Instead the show runners just showed us a captured Jaime Lannister. I was disappointed by that, but maybe it just didn't fit into their budget.

Kind of content I look for, shame that the show wants to be more flashy and "epic" nowadays
@AnalysisofThrones
@AnalysisofThrones 7 жыл бұрын
couldnt agree more man. earlier seasons seemed much more centered on complex and layered plots. as opposed to more recent seasons which feel like they are a series of spectacles / shock scenes, with simple, one dimensional plots to link them. And simple is a overstatement in some cases (such as dorne, parts of the north, arya storyline) where logic breaks down and seems unrealistic. And not saying i dont love latter seasons, but i enjoy the earlier ones way more. Dont think its a coincidence either that the earlier seasons rely much more on the books than the later ones. anyways thanks for the view and feedback!
@omfgcow
@omfgcow 6 жыл бұрын
I came to the same conclusion with the complete lack of depth shown with the scenes in the North during season 7. A little more epicness could have been used, a minute or two for the battle of Highgarden, details on what exactly happened to the main Tyrell army, Dorne forces not with the Greyjoy fleet (and how show Euron could teleport his fleet), and the remaining Tully army. 7 hours just isn't enough for what we wanted, just enough for a few epic battles and dramatic scenes that are not quite soap opera but approach that category.
@Alen725
@Alen725 6 жыл бұрын
Shame that every good show at some point gets people that bitch about it for no real reason. "Flashy and epic"? I see comments like this about every sequel/long tv show/game. FYI this battle would be more flashy and epic than regular scenes in series but I guess they focused on something non flashy and epic. Yet there we go, implying that skipping flashy and epic battle makes show flashy and epic. Or this is bad troll, not a serious comment?
@omfgcow
@omfgcow 6 жыл бұрын
So since I had a partial disagreement with the parent comment, based off of new material since said comment, I'm a troll? I said a specific scene, which being a battle scene would be flashy and epic, should have been longer and elaborated on. I'm not complaining about the two epic battle sequences we got, but that the limited time in season 7 was wasted on nonsensical dramatic plotlines. However, I take proper offense at your attempt to shoo legitimate criticisms of media away with a non-sequiter of said criticisms being cyclical and thus "no real reason", or implying that I'm an edgy reactionary latching on to a potentially trendy opinion. I still enjoyed season 7, but the lack of complex and layered plots, and the de-emphasis of manpower, logistics (exception being the existence of the loot train), and the effects of the wars and politics on the less notable nobility and smallfolk. Hopefully season 8 will acknowledge how the misrule and shortage of food in Cersei's realm will effect the Lannister armies and commoners.

But just physically cant do it at this time. Hope you understand. Thanks again for watching these

It is likely the Freys were going to betray Rob once Cat arrived at the Twins. In welcoming Cat, he said the words "Mayhaps". In the game of "lord of the crossing" the players would make all sort of binding promises, but if you say "mayhaps" anywhere in the negotiation - the binding promises were void. He did not want Rob or Cat there, he was not getting anything out of it. I would not put it past him to start planning the "Red Wedding" right then and there, the fact Rob found someone else and Tywin's promises were too delicious. I would not put it past him to kill off one of his daughters.

Between this and your video of the Reynes of Castamere I’m definitely a new subscriber... I just can’t believe that all these years and all the channels and videos I’ve watched and subscribe to and all the ASOIAF/Game of Thrones content I’m into it took me this long to find your channel and videos... rather for KZfaq to put it in my suggestion feed I should say. Glad they did ... better late than never I guess. I hope I find a “ Dance of Dragons “ analysis. Other channels were practically begged to do it and have t or won’t. Like Gods & Generals.. they just won’t do it. I hope you will

I spent 23 Years in the Army and you have some knowledge of Tactics and the intangible's one must have naturally or thru training to win the fight ! You insight to bring together the residual causes , Talisa and the Karstarks circumstances bringing Rob down the road to betrayal by his banner Men ! Good Job I will watch more of your video`s !

Great video man, you should continue making them. One video you can make is just after Caitlyn releases Jaime Lannister when it was implied Roose Bolton was losing battles on purpose and sacrificing Stark men to give Tywin an advantage.

Excellent stuff. I've been trying to push for some Catelyn chapters in which she is in Robb's war-room for Hype's Watch rereads because I love talking about the tactics that were going on, the consequences of such, and what he could have done differently.

What is admirable about George R.R Martin is that throughout his books, all aspects of life like politics, religion, economy, society, law e.t.c are so deeply analyzed and detailed that manages to attract audiences which are interested in all those issues. One of those aspects is of course, warfare. As we can see, Martin manages to describe brilliantly several details about medieval warfare which ranges from weaponry to strategies and tactics. He includes elements such as the time which is required for troops to be mobilized, to be moved in specific time, to be fed, to preserve high morale with their commander's charisma as well as their performance in battle. He analyzes Robb's military planning and mentions vital parts of it such the annihilation of Lannister scouts or the usage of military psychology against Jaime. It was just like reading a historical battle of Hannibal Barca (who used similar tactics). I wasn't a fan of ASOIAF or Game of Thrones since I dismissed it as an epic fantasy fairy-tale but when I read the books I was amazed from its depth and as a fan of military history I found it fascinating. GRRM is truly a genius. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the show which completely neglects all those neccessary details, focuses mostly on spectacular dragons and makes it boring. However, that only includes the last 2 seasons since I would be awfully unfair to criticise the amazing first 4 seasons. The 5th was also good for most of its duration, but completely messed it up in the end. Especially Stannis's campagin was a disaster regarding basic rules of warfare. Nevermind though, your video was awesome. Excellent work!
