I have to give Jon Hamner a lot of praise for his commentary. They lost the feed to Tony on the far end of the course so he had to commentate the majority of the race despite barely being able to see the action. Given the circumstance I think he did a great job.

Red Marauder was so brave this day. After this win, he only raced again 1 more time and it was almost 2 years later over hurdles. I guess this race really took its toll on him but him and the race will be remembered forever.

I was practically obsessed with this race as a kid (the National in general, but especially the 2001 running (for obvious reasons)). It was literally just a few days ago (almost exactly 20 years after the race) that I realised Khaki Krazy fell at the third. I always thought he was the 180-flipping horse at the 4th. Turns out that was plunge-favourite Inis Cara! I know this probably won't seem like much of a big deal to most people, but it blew my mind. I thought I knew this race inside-out (I literally must have watched it 100+ times in the space of a few years, sometimes more than once a day) , but all these years later this caught me out! I only realised my two-decade mistake after watching the Racing UK stream of the race. On the BBC footage Khaki's fall at the third is completely hidden by their camera angles. That's why I always assumed he was the one going at the fourth when John Hamner calls it! I doubt anyone will really appreciate how mind-blowing this was for me, but if anyone out there is going to care it's people watching this video! haha. You think you know every little intricate detail of a race for 20 years and then find out you had something totally wrong. Crazy. And for the record I "had" the legendary Addington Boy in this one (I was 9 so I couldn't exactly bet). He didn't get very far, even by the standards of this race's carnage.

This is a perfect example of how the conditions can affect this race. It had rained virtually non-stop for a week before the race creating bottomless going. There were rumours flying round the course less than an hour before the off that the race wouldn't go ahead due to the very heavy going. Me and my mates had all backed Edmond and were in line with the Chair and saw his spectacular fall. We were well gutted and piss-wet through.

I agree. Also as a rider myself and one who has worked full time with horses, I know how tired horses can get. Red Marauder was exhausted, and Smarty looked as if he would keel over. I have followed the GN since I was a young girl Red won because he was lucky to keep out of trouble and he handles the mud. Blowing Wind was finishing the strongest (albeit having been remounted ). Some comments here beggar belief, especially the one by a chap who reckons it is the best GN ever! I suggest he watches 1974: sunny warm day, horses hooves rattling on the fast ground and a horse carrying top weight presenting a masterclass in how to tackle Aintree fences. That horse was Red Rum winning his second GN. That year no fatalities and lots of finishers.

In 1980 Tim Forster's instructions to Charlie Fenwick was "keep remounting". Remounting was banned as a direct result of this race. It was the right thing as I never did like it and is open to abuse with a remounted horse not carrying the full weight for the full distance. They should outlaw refusing and reattempts.
@julzyboy1973

That still wasn’t my best day in race betting though, I had a royal ascot lucky 15 (20pew ) cost £6 and my first three had won 12/1, 10/1, 7/2 and my last horse was in a 28 runner handicap called Louis the pious, it won at 33/1. Look at how Llewellyn/Beau cuts off Queally/Merry People at the Foinavon fence...2:00-2:03. That is brutal. Makes me feel better when Llewellyn gets tossed later on.

Backed Red Marauder the year before and it fell at Bechers Brook while a mile behind others. Told my late Mam not to back this horse but as usual she did not listen to me and won £33 Still have not picked winner of the race since Highland Wedding in 1969 Backed the 3rd this year Gallard Du Mensil but just cannot get the winner

I bet Carl Llewellyn regrets not stopping to adjust the reins. How was he to know though? Beau looked the best horse going into the second circuit.

The reins were actually broken. That's the reason Beau jumped to his left before Carl moved him over to right next to the inside rail.

Loose horses were the real damaging blow in this race...caused a lot of jockeys to pull up
@TCDL11

They made changes to the National course a few years later by changing the width of the fences to allow loose horses to run around them plus a designated area to catch them. Furthermore runners were able to bypass a fence in case of an injury to horse or jockey.

Remember it well i backed it by pure chance, bit of a long story, 33 /1, last time I had the winner and that was because everything else fell or pulled up, apart from smarty that ran a great race, had fuck all since, hard race to get the winner

Best grandnational ever, could do with digital inhancing, maybe the bbc could put a master recording on youtube, never seen it so wet at Aintree as it was that day, really heavy going, actually prefer it wet get more fallers, and the loose hoarses caused mayhem.

I must say that I agree with you. Whilst I am always pleased to see horses and jockeys walk away unscathed, much of the spectacle of this race is centred around fallers and unseated jockeys. In fact, you rarely hear the term 'brought down' these days.

Mark Perryman red marauder had been very sloppy at some of his fences before the field was depleted, he did need a bit of stoking along in that ground even though he was known to like it, it was exceptionally bad that day.
