Friends is one of the most cherished and respected albums in The Beach Boys' entire catalog, and rightfully so. What is your guy's favorite song off of this amazing record?

One of the best Beach Boys albums to me. The baroque pop vibe is fantastic, and I really love Diamond Head.

I just found your channel, thanks for the reviews.! I became a Beach Boys fan back in 2018, Pet Sounds and SMiLE sessions were my introductions, it’s been a journey discovering there music, I found them at a tough time in my life, and the albums have been a true companion ever since. Right now my favorites are as follows, at this moment in time 1. Pet Sounds 2. SMiLE sessions 3. Friends 4. Sunflower 5. Wild Honey 6. Surf’s Up 7. The Beach Boys Today! 8. Smiley Smile 9. 20/20 10. Holland

@@purevycara Thanks for replying back man.! I dig how you review, and I appreciate you digging my list, I love that 1965-1973 period so much, and I do love a lot of the early early stuff too. I’m still becoming familiar over the course of time, but Brian’s creativity was so prolific during this period, the other guys too. But man, Brian’s work around this time was so far out, it amazes me… The Beatles are my all time favorite, but The Beach Boys have become incredibly important for me, there definitely in my top 5 now, it was also cool to learn to that both bands influenced each other big time back in the day.

Does Brian do meet and greets at his shows.? I’m trying to see him this year, didn’t see anything about meet and greets on the ticket website, the VIP information I mean

@@quinnspears3135 because of his old age and covid, i doubt it. I saw him last year and I'm seeing him again this year and i don't think there's VIP that I've heard of

Friends is always a good time. I agree that it's not as minimalist as people think, there's lots of really complicated patterns and orchestration compared to Smiley and Wild Honey. The genius of Brian on here is how he makes it all sound so easygoing. Great stuff.

Listening to this album brings me curious benefits. I don't know if it's normal that my stress has calmed down and I've relaxed. I find it surprisingly relaxing and calm. In fact, it even helps me concentrate to study.

Wake the world is probably my favourite track on this record. It's such a smooth easy going album that makes for really easy listening. Im not really a fan of the last two tracks however. (diamond head is fine but just doesnt really fit the album for me) transcendental medidation is just one of the goofy end tracks, kind of like funky pretty

I like how you analyze Friends being so young, I was also captivated by that vinyl when it came into my hands at the end of the 60's in just over 30 minutes, which is how long the LP lasts, it brought me to total calm. I consider that it was not valued in its time, there was a lot of music and very competitive. Your criticism is very good, congratulations, a hug from Uruguay.-

Fun fact: Diamond head is a surf spot in Hawaii. Also Steve Korthoff, Parks and Nick Grillo are in the lyrics of Be here in the morning. Hope you are going to do your top three soon. Great reviews

I just discovered this channel and I must say, nice job! It's great to see a new generation appreciating an American gem beyond the surf and hot rod songs. Your low-key air quotes at 16:29 was very much enjoyed.

Friends is truly a wonderful album, definitely ranks around the 5 - 7 spot for me. One of the last albums Brian was really involved in pre 15 Big Ones.

I love this album and if I was doing the review I think I'd probably saw the same things that you are saying. The actual song Friends when it comes on my shuffle playlist no matter what song it follows it immediately brings me up in mood, just an amazing song and I agree, one of their best right up there with Good Vibrations and California Girls.

I'm glad the album doesn't end with something obvious. "Transcendental Meditation" is like the jarring wake up in Smiley's "Wind Chimes" expanded into a song.

This album does have a unique vibe, and sonic world. I agree that it's one of their most cohesive, too. "Busy Doin' Nothin" makes me think Brian was relaxing at home, watching The Price Is Right, feeling blissed out, giving directions to his house over the phone, and wanting to turn that whole experience into a song. The music really does remind me of that jingle where The Price Is Right contestants are invited up to the stage. Friends took a while to grow on me, but it's grown.

Friends fights it out with Sunflower with me for my 3rd or 4th favourite album. The harmonies are amazing and it's the last album where Brian sings anywhere near 5 lead vocals till maybe Love You. Definitely still feels like a Brian Wilson production.

I agree! Diamond head is the beach boys’ best instrumental ever (besides let’s go away for a while). In the ukulele and steel guitars sounds just like something from a SpongeBob episode

Another thought: Busy Doin' Nothing is also like a part 2 to "I'd Love Just Once To See You"--both tracks are very much in the style of their respective albums, and both are quirky descriptions of Brian handling basic tasks in day-to-day life.

I always loved the mellow feel of Friends, but even though I like the album, I only started listening to it a few years after its release. At the time of release, I felt it was a disappointing record. Now years later I find that it's a charming recording. Time has changed my mind.

Have you listened to Passing By (demo) with an actual lead vocal by Brian? It’s a demo so don’t expect the same quality vocals but it’s still late 60s Brian so great. Meant For You - great opener, also has an extended version for anyone curious. Wake the World has a ‘promo’ music video look it up everyone! Busy Doin Nothing and When a Man Needs a Woman are two great songs. Don’t like the TM song and Anna Lee but understand it’s a product of their times. Great album and great video

Do you have the SMiLE sessions album.? Or box set.? That’s one of my prized possessions right there, so amazing, so happy that Brian finally was able to face the music from that time again. Friends makes me feel so good, calms me down, I’d say that about Sunflower too. Heck, all there albums
