Every thing about this show is hillarious. From the moment high Carl found the camera singing god only knows, and stared into it for a whole verse, to al mike and Brian tripling up on wouldn’t it be nice, (with Brian singing each word at whatever pitch he wanted) to Dennis lecturing Carl, etc

Wouldn't It Be Nice here is full shenanigans. Brian sings off key during the first chorus (Mike and Al look at him at the same time and Brian just nods along the rhythm as he shuts up). Wonderful to see this finally in such great quality, thank you. This is actually one of my favourite periods of Beach Boys history although, like Elvis in his final years, there were good nights and bad. I think on this tour, the band were travelling in two completely separate operations because of various tensions. Poor Carl had to go on national television and make a 'hostage video' apology for their erratic performances. It was really Al Jardine who was trying to set the example through quiet competence. Although they got roasted by the media, the tour was a huge success, they played big outdoor sports arenas right around the country. I love this version of Help Me Rhonda, and for reasons I can't explain, I also like Country Pie. Great stuff!
@1401minstrel
@1401minstrel 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, Carl's apology was for his performance alone, and it was specifically for the first Perth performance. He placed the blame squarely on his own shoulders for that performance. However, he was asked about the other performances on that tour during that same interview, and he said "They've gone fine." As we can see from this video, that was not the case. The interview can be found here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z-CGh7artZi2lIE.html

Sadly, in my opinion, these are not the worst vocals. The worst vocals, at least on Good Vibrations and God Only Knows, are five days later on March 13 in Perth, the show for which Carl apologized. KZfaq has no video of that show, and only audio of those two songs. There are a series of KZfaq videos that are labeled Perth that are actually this Melbourne show. There is also now and audiotape on KZfaq of an entire Perth show, but it is the show that took place on March 14, the day after the show for which Carl apologized.

Love the way Charles Loyd sounds with the band, Carl's comping on the piano in particular. I think Carl's out-of-character behavior is the ACT of defiance of all the negativity (particularly Brian turning against Carl and Dennis) and violence (Mike's cousin punched Carl before they went on the stage) imposed by the others in the band. That's why he still sounds great on most of his musical performances. He knew what he was doing. He also thanked Charles Loyd for all his solos after he finished soloing as he's the only one who knew exactly where his solo would end. I wished I were there to say "Carl, pick me up for real!"

At 37:04. Al Jardine calls an audible and tells Brian and Mike they'll all be singing the lead in "Wouldn't It Be Nice". I think he realized everyone was too wasted to do it alone.

Is Brian's bass actually plugged in? Looks like Ed Carter is up there with them on bass...I think anyways! Overall very good but I can hear Mike flatting some and possibly Carl in places...like has been mentioned on here there were some issues with the band around this time! Great post though!

@@noahnewhouse7795 This is the Melbourne show. The Perth show was even worse, and it is the show for which he apologized. There is no video of the Perth show (there are other videos of this show mislabeled as the Perth show), but there is audio of both God Only Knows and Good Vibrations (mislabeled as the Sydney show). It is truly cringeworthy.

I saw the them on this tour at the Sydney show grounds in what was a massive downpour which was so bad that only a few thousand of us turned up. But those who did were gifted a show that 45 years later is still one of the greatest concerts I ever attended. The stand out memories are the Band who were amazed that so many of us had turned up due to the insane rain and of Charles Lloyd playing of his sax. How lucky and grateful I am to have seen this fabulous show and be able to have seen he Beach Boys .... even without Brain Wilson.🐳

I saw the band for the second time the previous summer, and I was very excited to hear "All This is That" in the set, even if it was preceded by Mike's TM sermon. It was surprising to see Brian in the touring lineup. The "Love You" material didn't go over so well.

David Frost insisted Brian be a part of the tour contract. So, they dragged him out like a performing bear. I was at this concert; Brian was not there at all. Dennis and Mike were not speaking at all, and Dennis would leave the stage any time a 'Mike' song was played. Al spent the night stopping Brian from wandering off stage trying to bum a smoke from a Rodie. It was an interesting night. Years later I met Brian on the Smile tour, I told him I was there in 78. I felt like asking if he was there too.

They had to hold it together because the Wilsons were all blasted. It's sad to see them like that. They were such incredibly talented musicians. Carl was usually the glue that held the band together, but he's in rough shape here. Despite the high levels of intoxication, this concert is still not terrible. Just nowhere near their full potential.
