Premiering at Hollywood's iconic TCL Chinese Theatre on May 21st and streaming worldwide on Disney+ starting May 24th, the highly anticipated documentary "The Beach Boys" marks a collaborative effort between esteemed filmmakers Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny. Marshall, renowned for his five Academy Award Best Picture nominations and recipient of the esteemed Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award honorary Oscar alongside his producer wife Kathleen Kennedy, joins forces with Zimny, celebrated for his Grammy and Emmy award-winning projects with Bruce Springsteen.
Already earning accolades from those intimately familiar with the band's journey, "The Beach Boys" captures the essence of the legendary group's evolution.
Beach Boys visionary Brian Wilson expresses his delight with the documentary's outcome, reminiscing about the camaraderie, joy, and iconic harmonies that defined their era. Wilson's reflections are echoed by fellow Beach Boy Al Jardine, whose journey with Wilson traces back to their college days, where Jardine's mother notably funded the band's inaugural recording session.
Jardine reflects on the band's intricate tapestry of experiences, marveling at the evolution of their sound and legacy over six decades-a testament to their enduring impact. As Jardine aptly notes in the California Now Podcast, there's always another layer to uncover in the band's multifaceted story.
Truly, borrowing a phrase from another iconic California band, the Grateful Dead, "what a long, strange trip it’s been" for The Beach Boys-from humble beginnings at family gatherings to dominating the charts and securing a place in the revered Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I was born around Pet Sounds. These guys are like my dad’s age, a little younger. So growing up in the late 60’s, early to mid 70’s, everything they did in the 60’s is what I went after as a guitar player. Al Jardine and Carl Wilson had some of the coolest guitars you should still want. Really custom Fender’s, Rickenbacker, etc.. Brian is a post of his own, more on him later, he’s incredible as a musician and writer.

These guys really dont need to prove anything to anybody anymore. They are legendary without doubt and musically under Brian Wilson probably the only band to compete, inspire and for a time rival The Beatles. There has been many incarnations of this band but for me there was only ever one....Wilson B, Wilson C, Wilson D, Love , Jardine and Bruce Johnson. Their last piece of absolute recorded Beach Boy magic...From Here to Back Again. God bless the BBoys.😊

It's Bruce JOHNSTON and no, when he joined Brian didn't play with him so that is not a line-up that ever existed. When Brian left the road THAT was the end of the Classic Beach Boys. Forget the studio - they didn't play their instruments, aka were never a recording band. They started their career stealing a song from Chuck Berry and paying for it- Surf City and in person in real life NEVER were anything buy hateful dysfunctional jerks. Nobody likes Mike Love to this day, that's what makes this money grab doc hilarious. We were on the road with them so don't even question me either or I'll drop some more knowledge on you. Just research the hundreds of lawsuits and gun charges and assaults, cults, on and on..and well we know Dennis literally inspired Charlie M to kill innocent people so stow your BS about the Beach Boys. PIck up a book called Hollywood Eden that will explain all these SoCal spoiled Hollywood and Uni High kids from the guys that were there. If anything Jan Berry deserves the credit for the scene and sound more than any Beach boy or Wilson bro from way down dorky Hawthorne way. It's a very good quick read.

The Wilson music legacy, what was in their blood, is rarely if ever, referenced. Their grandparents left Missouri for CA during the dust bowl and lived off the land, like gypsy minstrels, singing by the campfire. Much like Glen Campbell…from very rough western expansion. Song and celebration of life deeply rooted into their DNA. Just listen to Rio Grande off Brian’s Imagination album. It’s EPIC.

I have a question. At the VERY beginning, Murry & Audree went to Mexico. The story goes that the Wilson's food money went for renting the instruments. Then there is Al Jardine's mother financing that too. Which version is true? Or is it all true?

The new beach boys book seems to have settled on a hybrid of these two stories. The Wilsons used their parents’ money to hire the recording gear, and then Al’s mum topped up the money to hire instruments

The early and mid 60's were the Brian-Wilson-era, but the best time of the BB's as a whole band were from 1967 (Smiley Smile) to In Concert (1973). All these albums show their abilities as singers, songwriters, producers and arrangers. They were a great creative force in this time. After the big success of the compilations "Endless Summer" (1974) and "Spirit Of America" (1975) they became an oldies act. There were really good songs on the following albums (I like Love You and the Light Album), but the concept became more and more nostalgic.

So good! Loved all the old photos, videos and old videos. The interviews were excellent as well. Learning that there we’re basically two Beach Boy bands was so interesting. I think Ryan Tedder made the most amazing statement about Bryan Wilson and the original members. The touring band could recreate what the studio band created under Brian’s talent. As much as The Beatles albums were good they couldn’t recreate their music live. That says, a lot about all the talent involved with The Beach Boys. Congratulations to a wonderful tribute documentary from a South Bay local.

The other vocal groups of that era (The Association, The Four Seasons, the Mamas & The Papas, et al) as wonderful as they all were, were missing the dynamic of The Beach Boys' harmonies because the Wilsons (+Jardine+Love) had genetics going for them: The voices blended like no other because they were brothers/family. Listen to the first ten seconds of Don't Worry Baby, and their unique familial conjunction is unmistakable -- no studio technology in the world can generate that cohesion if it isn't there at the core

Little mentioned fact, but in the 60's there was an East Coast Exodus of young men and women after hearing the Beach Boys singing California songs about the lifestyle in the sunshine. My brother and 6 of his friends left upstate NY in a car and headed to California and once they let everyone know they made it another wave of young people headed out. That was one small town and I'm told that wanton fever spread throughout the East Coast. Their music started a cultural revolution.

California and the Beach boys personifying it or a joke. I've been to California. Well out there with the mindset that this is what California is all about after listening to the Beach boys for 20 plus years and that's not what California is about California is a very liberal mindset with a lot of homelessness, very very dirty towns, and a broken infrastructure. I went out there with this dream of this is the Beach boys saying about and it was nothing like that. The Beach boys era of California died in the summer of love. It became overtaken with drugs and access. It was a big disappointment to visit California with a Beach boys mindset.

Brian Wilson has no idea where he is and Mike Love and Al Jardine hate each other. I guess I'll just listen to the music and forget the modern day corporate bullshit. Fuck Disney.

Agreed. I have never gotten a chance to see the real Beach Boys in concert. I would love it if they did just ONE MORE blowout show with EVERYONE. Brian, Bruce, Al, Rickey, Blondie, David and Mike. I have no interest in seeing Mike’s pathetic cover band.

@@lowenbad I had almost-front-row seats to several Mike Love Tribute Band performances, bringing never-used beach balls on which I’d written *THANK BRIAN!* in thick black Sharpie. Over the evening, I inflated each and set ‘em flying. Several landed at Mike’s feet. He read the message, and glared at me. At a 2012 meet ‘n greet, Mike said to me repeatedly, “I know you. *How do I know you?!?”* He probably thought we had a long-ago one-night stand. Just no.

How are they fooling the world of music for 60 years? Even the original band was together for 22 years. The recordings were genuine even if you don't like them.

Then why are you even here? Brian Wilson has been known and respected by everyone who was and is anyone in rock and roll (and beyond) since at least 1964 for his writing, music and vocal arrangements, and production. The list is tremendous of all he's influenced. Yea, fake and phony.
