"before the end, you will pluck snowdrops at midwinter, die by your own choosing and weep for a nightingale."
these books.... this world and its characters are something so familliar to me and so very a part of my heart. katherine arden is truly a gifted author, making one understand every character no matter how vile they may be, and her descriptions... it's like poetry but in prose. i must admit i love the second book the best (just by a the tiniest of margins) and hopefully one day i'm gonna do smth like this for it and the third book.... or something more general and include more side characters like i did in my uprooted video. so this video is mainly focused on the relationship between morozko and vasya (and medved) but like in an aesthetic way.
i really wanted to include the prick of the priest that is konstantin but i just couldn't think of a man to match his looks that has enough footage to actually make something with it hence two saša cameos that are more of a teaser to scenes in the second book (i guess you can pretend he is konstantin in the context of the video and chose scenes/voiceovers and i was tempted to do so myself but danila is my perfect saša soo). did i mention i love saša? because i do.
and medved.... don't get me started on that absolutely maddening and powerful incarnation of lonely chaos. when i first finished the first book i definitely had not expected that, in just another half of the book time, i was going to come to understand and care for him. it sneaked up on me like the first frost of winter.
the fact he gets the best lines does not help either lol
- “There are no monsters in the world, and no saints. Only infinite shades woven into the same tapestry, light and dark. One man’s monster is another man’s beloved. The wise know that.”
(this is his deep quote but you should see the power of sass and one liners he wields, especially in the third book)
i'm trying not to ramble too much but am kinda failing at it.... i want to make an edit that focuses only on morozko and medved - death and life, peace and chaos, winter and summer. then again i want to make a lot of things but end up failing at it bleh
i am kinda half deaf atm but i was aching to edit something in regards to this trilogy so.... i hope it's decent enough.
as i said for naomi novik's work, i don't want hollywood to come near these books - not even a centimetre. if someone ever decides to do something with it, i feel like the animation form would give the best opportunity to bring to life all the magic and quietness of this world as well as sheer volume of all the emotions that we feel throughout the story. i just keep imagining the scenes like vasya letting požar go and she transforming into a firebird and lighting all of moscow with her anger or when vasya first comes to medved's sleeping place deep in the forest come to life with the help of animation.
translation of the lyrics can be found here: drive.google.c...

The actors chosen are so absolutely living up to the images in my mind when reading the series. I hope when there will ever be a movie or tv series on it that they will choose this cast or some cast exactly like this!

that's the biggest compliment i could ever get, thank you!! i hope there will never be a movie/show for this bc they wouldn't do it justice - and let's face it, they would dumb it down and westernize it. so yeah, im content for it to remain as it is :)

i cannot even begin to describe how much i love these books... CANNOT EVEN BEGIN!! thank you so much! it was quite a challenge to even come close to the aesthetic and the world these characters and story live in but i hope i at least managed to evoke enough curiousity for people to go read the books.... and yes, mila would be a really good vasja - she has that stubborn spark of wild magic in her eyes.

although i don't have problems with speaking russian, my writing is quite basic so you'll excuse me for replying to you in english. thank you very much for all the compliments - i'm beyond thrilled people seem to like and are intrigued by the premise and its aethetic enough to seek out the book series to read it themselves. i do admit, i could've done a better job as book trailer but there just isn't enough the kind of footage i need to pull it of.... so i'll have to be content with this aesthetic mess instead haha

@@cursethestarss I`m very sorry, you used parts from russian movie in your video, so i`ve decided that you are russian (people from non post soviet countries usually never watch russian movies) You`ve done a fantastic job! As for the slavic kind of content if you need some more I can recommend to find "He - dragon" (2015), "Wolfhound" (2006 film), "Legend of Kolovrat" (also translated as "Furious" (2017 film)

@@homylynx9840 no need to apologise, really! as i said before, i do speak and read russian but am not very good at writing... and i do come from a post-communist country (croatia, which was a part of yugoslavia until the war in the 90s) and have grown up on old soviet films, especially the animated ones. thank you for the reccomendation, i've watched both on drakon and kolovrat but haven't heard of wolfhound until now.... will put it on my watchlist! -and if you have more reccomendations that would fit the aesthetic of the winternight trilogy im all ears-

@@cursethestarss oh, i see. Hello to Croatia =) here is the list (most of the films are pretty bad, but at least they have russian/slavic atmosphere, so they can be useful) "Викинг" (2016), "Золотая орда" (2018), "Скиф" (2018) - I really likes this one, though it`s a little bit trashy, "Stara basn: Kiedy słonce było bogiem", (2003) - polish, earlier period, just great to watch, "Годунов" (2018) - I haven`t seen this one yet, but it looks not bad in the trailer (and there are many traditional russian costumes and architecture), "Вий" (2014) - it represents 19th century, but there is a beautiful scene of Kupala night in the very beginning I hope it can help. Can`t wait for your next videos!

How? How do you always do this? How do you always make the most unbelievable beauty like it's nothing? Like it's easy? Gosh this is so haunting, so gorgeous, the atmosphere of winter forest, of mythology, and the song?? the song?? Gosh what a goddamn beauty and again, how the fuck!!

And now I have a new series to read. I remember reading Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente a while back and just being enthralled. There's something about Russian romance the utilizes folklore that's just... so poignant and moving.

i'm so glad to hear you're going to read the books!! well, slavic stories and mythologies are in general more... hmm how to say this properly in english.... they are more beautiful in their unforgiving and unyielding cruelty no matter how many bird-horses one gets to ride; there are always consequences. as for deathless, i agree with what @HomyLynx said below - it is not very respectful of the stories it takes from as well as history.... and i mean it in a way that, even though there are some beautiful descriptions and premises in there, it seems as if the author talks from one point of view history wise without thinking through the events she took as her historical backdrop. i don't know, it's a complicated and overly long arguement on my part to trouble you with it in this comment.... in short, i reccomend reading into folklore and mythology (and not just russian, but of other slavic countries) thank you!

@@mezscat656 there aren't many books with this kind of vibe and quality written in english tbh. the closest i can think of is "uprooted" and "spinning silver" by naomi novik,"hunted" by meagan spooner adn "the wolf and the woodsman" by ava reid. these don't deal with slavic mythology but the fairytale vibe is similar: house of salt and sorrows by erin a craig, the remnant chronicles by mary e pearson, the bird and the sword by amy harmon, perilous gard by elizabeth pope, the changling sea by patricia mckillip, the faceless woman by emma hamm.

Ugh, as if my 'I need to read this' list wasn't already a mile long T___T Dora, _DORA_ , I need a moment, nay, I need _many_ moments to process this. Like I said, I've been away of these books for some time, but just never got round to reading them (this may be the kick in the ass I needed), but ooph. This is so gorgeous, some atmospheric. I could hardly bear to look away for even a moment, or even really breath in case I missed something, or something snapped me out of this world, because this video is truly the most immersive, and I felt entirely _transported_ .
