@@Rolkass1 many many sources, firing data from us army trials mention they could not get the gun above 1200rpm and took allot of skill to fire to it's max capacity. As you state yourself great sir you where firing an mg3 that shoots 7.62x51mm nato and not the original 8mm mauser round. The mg3 does have a slower fire rate of 1000-1200rpm so you are correct on the mg3,he is talking about the original ww2 mg.

You would have thought the germans would have organised water troughs to cool the barrels. The other fact which seems odd, once he had expended 12000 rounds, the only ammo available was all tracer, if you can supply tracer why not ball ammunition, just a couple of thoughts. I saw a docudrama made by the BBC, and it featured Franz Gockel actions, it depicted him firing a MG42, not a captured water cooled machine gun.

This story is ridiculous and I'm tired of seeing WWII history channels use it for clickbait... To start, Severloh was not a machine-gunner in a static infantry unit along the coast; he was an aide to Bernhard Frerking, who was an artillery officer. So the idea that Severloh would have a machine-gun, let alone something like an MG42, when he was merely an aide to an artillery officer, is highly dubious. Machine-guns along the Calvados coast tended to be older like MG34's or captured guns like French MAC 31's or Polish Wz.30's. The MG42 was not as ubiquitous as most people think. So, if the artillery troops at WN62 happened to get their hands on a state-of-the-art MG42, I doubt they would just hand it off to some officer's aide who was not even a trained machine-gunner. The 2,000-some Americans that Severloh claimed to have killed is also ludicrous. The documented number of Americans killed on ALL of Omaha Beach is 856, with 715 missing. Factoring in that a large chunk of 'missing' were likely killed in action, the total number of American deaths on Omaha Beach is approximately 1,000 to 1,500. It's an estimation, but all documents point to these numbers. Severloh's position only covered Easy Red sector, and the main American force landing on Easy Red sector was the 1st Infantry Division. The documented casualties of the 1st Infantry Division on Omaha Beach are 86 killed, 528 wounded, and 357 missing. So how can Severloh kill 2,000 men when he would have only been covering one section of the beach where there was only part of one division that in total suffered 971 casualties (killed, wounded, and missing)? There were also 7 other machine-gun positions at WN62, and there were other WN's covering Easy Red sector besides WN62; so it's not like Severloh was the only one killing everyone on Easy Red sector. Another claim Severloh made was that he fired 12,400 rounds, and the ammo was brought to him throughout the day by an unknown NCO, which also makes no sense. All the trench networks had 'munistionsablage' units to store ammunition for nearby MG positions, and they could only hold a limited number of cans. A German ammo can for a machine-gun belt held 250 rounds. If Severloh fired anywhere near 12,400 rounds, he would have gone through about 50 ammo cans... which means the mysterious NCO was going around all of WN62 and stealing ammo cans from the other MG positions. Also, how could have Severloh fired on David Silva's boat when Severloh's position covered Easy Red sector, but David Silva was in Company D of the 29th Infantry Division landing on Dog Green sector 3 to 4 miles west from WN62? I believe Severloh was there, but I highly doubt he fired a machine-gun, and even if he did, there is no way he killed as many men as he claimed. It's a dramatic story people like to talk about, but it does not make any sense when you think about it. I actually did a whole episode on it on Paul Woodage's KZfaq show about it. If you want to watch that, just search "Myths of WWII, Heinrich Severloh" and you'll find my name on the episode.

Are you saying that Severloh was able to fire into every single American landing craft along the entire FIVE MILE strip that is Omaha Beach? Severloh's position only covered Easy Red sector, and the main American force landing on Easy Red sector was the 1st Infantry Division. The documented casualties of the 1st Infantry Division on Omaha Beach are 86 killed, 528 wounded, and 357 missing. As always; Americans show up, with very little knowledge of what they are getting into, we can thank the politicians for that.

Is this that ridiculos story of an MG42 gunner that killed more than 1000 allied men ? Do you people realise how stupid this is given that the Allies lost around 2000 men at Omaha ? And what ? One guy killed more than 1000 ? With one gun ? Please tell me people are not that stupid.

@@sergeantsalty1236 Well the estimates are between 2000 and 5000 and that includes all killed wounded and missing. So in reality not even 2000 dead. And Omaha was the hardest. The others went a lot easier, this way you can see what a crushing defeat D Day was for nazi germany.
