Awesome stuff My Dad was a Captain for 25+ years worked for Wisconsin Barge Line, Conti carriers and More ! He passed away in his Room just outside of Louisville on the Ohio. I worked for ACBL, Conti carriers and ADM !

Where the Arkansas River goes into the Mississippi we get behind the tow boats and set out our jug lines. The wash from the props make the big cats go crazy

And what should blow your mind even more is this. You are on land. You have relatively immediate steering and stopping capability. On the water, it ain't that simple or straightforward.

Cats01 just the fact that you can control something on moving water impresses me , starting , stopping , turning , controlling something like that with that much weight on something that’s on a liquid moving surface

Why is it called a 'Towboat' when it was obviously designed to "push"?

@@jacquesblaque7728 Towboats push and Tugboats can push at times when inland but mainly pull when at sea. Tugboats have a model bow or v shaped and Towboats are flat at bow with push-knees for barges. Some Tugboats help ships dock. License for each is the same. Area of operation licensed for may be different though

Electro Motive Division, General Motors, Lagrange, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

Before 1930 Winton built engines for Electro-Motive Corp. Then GM bought both, then named the combo Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of GM, with Cleveland Diesel building engines. In 2005 Caterpillar bought EMD, making it Progress Rail subsidiary of Caterpillar. In April 2021, Progress Rail closed to LaGrange plant.

If the "Tow Boat" is pushing, how do you control where the front barge goes?

Did you count the # of lines/winches from the side of the tug to the stern of the barge assembly? The tug also has a group of rudders.

Yes. But we call all of them Captain.

No. There are 2 captains. One is on the boat while the other has their 4 weeks off, they rotate back and forth, though sometimes both end up being on the boat at the same time for short periods.. The pilot drives the boat on the back watches. There are likewise 2 of them. Their rotation make it so they both do 2 weeks with each captain. Pilots aren't called captains, even if they have a masters cert or have worked previously as a captain.

“ NO “ We don’t run 🏃 these 10,500 HP. 900 rpm n/b @ ADM we run 850 rpm’s with a 4.71 to 1 gear box that puts the shaft tachs @ 188 u here in the pilot 👨‍✈️ house and the “BEAST” has sense repower has 3 of the new EMD 16 cylinder turboed teir 3 engines with the stamp on the side of the engines reads 4,000hp per engine. Note to self nothing done ✅ to gear ratio or wheels so you still have u still have the output of a 10.500

@@corymccullough3070 Simply a needle on a gauge that indicates the movement or swing of the barges the more they are turning the more the needle moves.

Hubert Harned believe he is on the dan Mcmillan. He was in baton rouge 4 hours ago and is currently northbound. Only artco boat bound for st Louis near baton rouge. Found him on AIS.
