Broken Record Podcast

Күн бұрын

It’s been almost 35 years since the Beastie Boys released the all-time classic, “Licensed to Ill.” And while some of the record’s lyrics and antics sound dated, the album is still exceptional.
For Beastie Boys fans, “Licensed to Ill” is a glimpse into the lives of MCA, Ad-Rock, Mike D and their first DJ and producer Rick Rubin. Their debut album is a pastiche of inside jokes and musical inspiration pulled from the classic rock and hip-hop records they listened to in Rick’s college dorm room.
Rick recently connected with Mike D, Ad-Rock and Spike Jonze, who directed the new Beastie Boys documentary. With Spike playing moderator, they teleport back to the early ‘80s and talk about their lives leading up to the release of “Licensed to Ill.” It’s all here-the inspiration behind “Brass Monkey,” Rick’s infamous bubble machine, and why DJ Double R bailed on the Beastie’s first big break - opening up for Madonna on her 1985 tour.
Rick and Adam Horovitz haven’t talked in about twenty years, and like most Zoom calls, their reunion gets off to a glitchy start. Mike D kicks things off.

If you only focus on the HATE, you will completely fail to realize what happened. Madonna. Super Ultra Pop Icon. The FIGURE head of the System. Everything the Beastie Boys are not down with from my understanding. Its the Anti-Hero. I think you may not know how to always say that Rick, however I figure you just want them to figure it out themselves. Such an incredible opportunity to setup where exactly this band stands within the system it loathes. We are NOT this. HAPPILY. Becoming the figure head of the ANTI system. Instantaneously. We all really needed that. Its why hiphop has its appeal. Its ANTI-Establishment obviously hahahaha The universe puts things in the order that needs to be. I am supremely grateful I caught this interview!! Thank all of ya'll!! Without any of you, hiphop isnt. End of story.

This was wonderful to hear. I was into Run-DMC but when I heard Licensed To Ill that was instantly my shit. I have had so many copies of it.. at first on a dubbed cassette I got from my buddy Neil, then I bought the cassette, stole two vinyl copies from Columbia House music club, had to get a new casette because I wore the first one out, shoplifted a copy on cd and of course I got the VHS tape with all the music videos and nonsense. Now I listen on my phone or play the vinyl. I love everything Beastie Boys have released but I'm pretty sure that album got more plays than anything else I've ever listened to.

I love this interview. I grew up in a house with only 2 or 3 45's, in the 70's. So that absence of music around me, created a clean slate for me to decide what I would become style wise when it came to music and attitude. It was hard to talk to the people that worked record stores so some of the things I bought were just from the album art alone or from thrift stores. Mostly funk and punk records and what they clumped together then, "world music" and reggae. I found my first early Sonic Youth cassette: Confusion is Sex, the same day I found Cooky Puss on cassette at a mall record store having not heard of either. That day changed my life. Also, Indianapolis had some good venues for hardcore and great bands came through Naptown in the 80's. Back then punks or metalheads would make fun of you if you listened to "crossover music" -hilarious! Some of my favorite bands live like early fishbone.

No disrespect to Questlove but I'm a HUGE Beastie Boy fan born and raised in Philly (I saw Public Enemy open for the BB at the Spectrum in '87) and i have no idea what he's talking about in regards to Hold It Now Hit it 45:10 The BASS in that record is what made it a hit in Philly. You could hear that 808 coming out of every car and boom box that year. I do remember there was an instrumental on the B-side, but that's not the version that took off in the streets of Philly. Maybe that was in the part of Philly Quest is from, but city wide that song stuck out because we had never heard an 808 Bass that deep and that loud in a song.

Would love if Rick, Adam, and Mike could get into a studio with some of Yuach demos and create one last Beastie Boy’s album. Like the Beatles did with anthology. They have the advantage that Yuach’s demos are likely In much better shape than Lennon’s were. Yuach was a producer, timing is to drum loop, digital, and style of music. I think Rick could help them find a way to make it happen. Understood there’s tension with Ad-Rock, but likely because they were closer.
