This song was written by John Lennon while The Beatles were at an Ashram in India in 1968 studying Transcendental Meditation. It was written for Prudence Farrow (Mia Farrow’s sister) who isolated herself in her seclusion and wouldn’t come out to join her meditation partners John and George. John wrote and played the song on acoustic guitar while sitting outside her room to coax her to come out as they were all worried for her. It’s an amazing song and really enhanced by George Martin and The Beatles beautiful arrangement, harmonies and instrumentation. Songs like this mark the group’s incredible advances, innovations and constant desire to evolve and not repeat the sounds and songs they made before. To me this sets them apart from other musical groups before and after who were more satisfied to remain in their comfort zone with music that was commercially successful but not overly inventive. The Beatles constantly reinvented themselves and drove contemporary music onwards and upwards in the 60’s and still do today.

Well, now that you mention it, the film _Oh, What a Lovely War_ came out in 1969 and was a look at WWI using popular music from that war. It is a brilliant juxtaposition of the period's music and the reality of war, presented as a satirical musical. Some of the songs end up breaking your heart. This movie should be on everyone's bucket list. The church scene will haunt you for the rest of your life, and you will be glad for it.

Prudence was inspired and wriiten while the Beatles were in India with the Dalilama. They went in search of Spiritual Guidance. You see they had fame, wealth, creativity, women,. But, they did NOT have Peace, Happiness, Tranquility & Joy. This is a TRUE STORY!! While visiting the Dalilama, Mia Farrow's sister was there at the same time. Dalilama was teaching meditation. They spend hours in their own huts, trying to drown out distractions, sadness, turmoil, childhood trama. But, Mia's sister would stay in her hut fir days. So John Lennon & George just started singing this song they composed on the spot. Prudence is Mia's sister and they composed this song to coax her out of her hut. Thats how creative they were!! Dear Prudence wont you come out to play...... 🎶🎵🎸 Thats also when George started using India instruments in his songs. BEATLES THE MOZART OF 20TH CENTURY! AND BRIAN WILSON OF THE BEACH BOYS. 🎵❤️

As others have said here, there's The Beatles and then everyone else. I've said this many times over the years - my life would not have been the same without The Beatles. I started listening to the music my older siblings were listening to at some point in 1963, around the time I turned three. The Beatles went on the Ed Sullivan show in February 1964. I have a vague memory of watching them and being enamored with the music and their look and they way they acted on stage. I had no idea at the time that they would have such an effect on me forever. My siblings started buying their albums as they came out, starting with Meet The Beatles in early 64, and they usually had something on the charts on the radio for the next several years. They're a huge part of the reason I love music as much as I do and why I ended up playing guitar and playing and singing in bands. We had The White Album back then and my sisters and I listened to it over and over for quite a while. This was one of my favorites. Thank you John, Paul, George and Ringo!

Prior to their huge success, they had been together as a performing unit since 1958. By time they recorded their first lp in one 10 hour session, the Beatles had 5 stays in Germany. During these years in Hamburg, the guys would play 6 to 8 hours a day, so they were a tight unit. To ward off boredom, they learned new songs. McCartney has said that at this time, they had a repertoire of over 200 songs. This was the fire that forged the Beatles. It was a perfect storm having the two greatest songwriters in the same band, plus George and Ringo.

I love seeing you guys turning on to The Beatles. This was me at 19 in 1986. I'd always knew they were around (and I was into Punk) but one day I really heard them, and that was that. The enthusiasm never dies. They were truly a divine gift.

I was 8 in '62 when Love Me Do came like a bullet to my brain. They influenced everyone and everything. What an incredible time to be alive. I miss those days so much,thousands of stories,something was always happening and these boys were front and centre.

One thing that always stands out to me about Beatles recordings is everything sounds so perfectly placed and yet they were working with limitations that don't exist today. Today you can mix as many individual tracks as you want and include any kind of sounds you can imagine yet people aren't creating anything anywhere near the Beatles' level.
@ArniePorter

So true and to think their first two albums were recorded using two track tape systems developed just after WWII. They progressed to a four track system in their middle period and it wasn’t until 1968 that they had access to eight track systems and only Abby Road was recorded using a transistorized recording console rather than the valve based consoles they had to use previously. Given these limitations, it’s amazing all the innovative recording techniques and arrangements they tried and used so successfully.

Great reaction, even upon first hearing, their songs flow so naturally and harmoniously, it’s almost as if they were pre-existing and demanded to be realized. You know who that’s like? Michelangelo! said his sculptures already existed and he was just liberating them from blocks of marble 😉 Prudence and Don’t Let Me Down are 2 of their, and pop music’s, very most beautiful songs and melodies. Every note, every production choice, every single moment is perfect. You’re effected so emotionally because the Beatles are about joy, generosity, and love.

The song is a reference to the actress Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence, who was on the retreat with the Beatles in India in 1968 to study transcendental meditation with the Maharishi Manesh Yogi, who was later revealed as a phony and creep after hitting on Mia Farrow. That was the subject of John's song from this album, Sexy Sadie, which skewered the Maharishi but good. In fact all of John's song from the White Album were written at the retreat. As has been mentioned, you really need to check out more from that album, or hey you could always do the whole thing as a Patreon video. It will blow your mind bros!

they are definitely magical creatures....geniuses with talent beyond belief and that is why they were SO popular and WHY they lasted (in their music) They were NEVER BORING, we NEVER KNEW what their next album was going to be cos their music and lyrics EVOLVED with EACH successive album. To appreciate that you would have to listen to their albums like I did and fans of my generation who were teens (and younger) when they came out and started recording in 1962. THAT is how you will HEAR how they evolved, and they did it in only 8 short years for the U.K. and Europe(before they broke up), Those of us in the U.S. only had them for 6 years!! (1964 - 1970) as a group,

Now you know why everyone went so crazy for them. They changed music is right! Before them music seemed more “old fashioned “. Their music is timeless. I’m 70 and remember watching them on EdSullivan on Sunday night. My cousin had their records and I used to go to her house and I just wanted to listen to them for hours.
