The Beatles didn't have ghost writers ... That entire Rubber Soul album is fantastic. This is a beautiful and simple and direct love song. It is so touching. I have performed it at weddings before.

I said as a kid that I wanted it for my wedding if I ever married and then had to convince my sister to use it for her wedding when she asked me saying how guilty she felt about using ‘my song’ that even if I marry I really don’t want a wedding so I wanted someone I love to use it! She did, played by the pianist at the restaurant we frequented for special occasions our whole childhood, and it was beautiful.

At the age of 24 when he wrote this, John Lennon was no stranger to loss. His father ran away when he was a child and his mother gave him to her sister (John’s Aunt) to raise. When he was a teen, his mother was killed by a drunk driver. His best friend from art school, who was in the band for awhile, suddenly died of a brain aneurysm. Paul McCartney lost his mother to cancer when he was a teen as well.

Only John (because of Mimi) thought the driver was drunk. It’s not even mentioned in the inquest. Julia was just as shortsighted as John and she was coming out of a gap in the hedge, likely not even paying attention at sunset on a curve in the road.

@@queenrosered He didn't use one most likely because he didn't have one, but the intention wasn't for it to sound like a harpsichord, it was to be a high piano. @queenrosered
@queenrosered Жыл бұрын
@@pizzarellayt I'm 72. I was a total Beatles fanatic from the age of 13, in 1964. I'm very aware of George Martin's influence in the recording studios. If he'd WANTED a harpsichord, he'd have had one. He and Paul and John (and later, even George) would use all kinds of instruments and unique special recording effects to get different sounds. Playing sections of their recording backwards, adding a French horn (Penny Lane for ex) speeding up and slowing down, using an actual hammer (Maxwells Silver Hammer anyone?) And because Martin had previously worked with so many classical artists, he could press ANY kind of musician/ instrument into service with 1 call, the only limit to what they could do was in their imaginations. Any lucky for the world of music, their imaginations were limitless! Funny side note, John hated the way his voice sounded when he sang so he'd often use effects to "mask" it. I loved his voice. Immensely. Sigh... Their like will never come again. ✌ 💘

The Beatles wrote this song and almost all their music but did cover some other songs early in their career. But starting ~1965 I think all their music was original. They could write amazing lyrics and transformed pop music from simple love songs with their more introspective and social aware lyrics.

As we age, I’m now 70 yo, the lyrics evoke so many wonderful as well as bittersweet memories. My husband, Bob and I have always been huge fans of the Beatles. Before his death in March 2020, I would tell him so often that this song reflects my deep love for him. Paul was 14 when his mother died of cancer. John was 17 when his mother was hit and killed by a car. Insight born of pain.

No “ghostwriters” for the Beatles. They started with two songwriters in the group and by the time they broke up in 1970, they were ALL songwriters! Plus, they could all sing lead vocals! They all had successful solo careers after they broke up. They all wrote songs and all 4 are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at least twice….once for The Beatles and one for their solo careers.

Music is powerful. The Beatles gave us some of the most complex, and some of the simplest, music. Their genius was in making all of it speak. George Martin the producer also played on some Beatles songs, including the piano on "In My Life." "I couldn't play the piano at the speed it needed to be played, the way I'd written the part," he said in another 2012 interview. "I wasn't that good a pianist, but if you had had a really good pianist, he could do it. I couldn't get all the notes in. One night I was by myself and played the notes at half speed but an octave lower on the piano, recording at 15 inches per second. When I ran the tape back at 30 inches per second, the notes were at the right speed and in the correct octave."

The sped up piano solo was dreamt up and played by their sound engineer, George Martini who was sometimes referred to as the fifth beatle. He played it normally but recorded it at a very low speed, so that when it was later played ay proper speed it would sound sped up and sound like a harpsichord. They were not only great songwriters and performers but great innovators and always looking to try something new. Definitely tthe greatest band ever,

George wrote the part but couldn't play it as fast as it needed to be. So he recorded the part (on a regular piano) at 1/2 speed. Then, when they sped it back up, it matched the song's tempo while sounding an octave higher. Brilliant use of 60s technology.

That wasn't actually an electric piano. The Beatles left a gap in the song for a guitar solo, but couldn't write a solo that they liked, so their producer George Martin played a bit of Mozart on a regular piano. The thing is, he couldn't play piano very well, so he played it slowly in a lower key and then sped the recording up until it was in the correct key, creating the tinny piano sound you're hearing, like an electric piano or even a toy piano. Some people even trace the 60s harpsichord craze to that sound. But it worked perfectly for this song.
