Hey man, I think you'd love to know that you actually can see the performance of "I've got a feeling" that made in to the album, because the album track is literally a recording of a live presentation on the rooftop of their studios! Looking for footage of this presentation you can see "Get Back"live, "Don't let me down", wich is their most watched video on yt, and "I've Got a Feeling"

The second half of Abbey Road (from the song ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’ all the way until ‘The End’ is a medley - it’s meant to be played all in one go without stopping between songs. Try to listen to it that way to get the full experience, or else you’ll be stopping and listening to fragments of really short songs

I actually think it should start with Because, which I feel flows into You Never Give Me Your Money just as well as the rest of the medley flows.

The medley starts from Because.

@@charliecochran3035 I agree - it really is a pity 'Because' is often excluded from the medley because it is a complete song in itself. But it is so much in a continuum with the feeling and atmosphere of the rest of Side Two it seems a shame to separate it. IMO, the magic of the whole thing starts with because and just build through to The End (with that little bow to Her Majesty, of course, to complete the performance).

Paul wrote the song “Let It Be” after his late mother (who died when he was only 14) came to him in a dream when he was going through the breakup of The Beatles. She advised him to just let it be. Her name was Mary. Of course, many religious people think it’s about the Virgin Mary, but it’s actually about his mom. I’m sure that he probably realized that when he wrote it.

My top 5 from Let It Be: 1. Let It Be, 2. Across the Universe, 3. Get Back, 4. The Long and Winding Road, 5. Two of Us. This isn't one of my favorite Beatles albums, but it certainly has some good songs on it. The Beatles are one of very few artists where you can listen to every album, and even the lesser albums are pretty good. If I were you, for artists you check out in the future, I would often just listen to the albums from when they were generally thought to be at or somewhere near their peak. That's often not an easy call, so you could define that generously: Beach Boys 1964-71, Rolling Stones 1965-81, The Who 1965-78, Kinks 1966-72, R.E.M. 1983-96, for CCR, skip their last album, etc.

@@princeshanghai I think they probably all knew it - it was a sea shanty/folk song that referenced an old story about a sex worker and the area of Liverpool - Lime Street in this version - (the Beatles home city) where she supposedly plied her trade. The sort of thing people would sing in pubs after a few drinks on a Thursday night. Or possibly even a Friday...

Fun fact: One After 909 is actually one of the earliest John Lennon songs, having been written sometime in the late 50’s, and was first recorded in 1960. This was so early in their career that it was before The Beatles were called “The Beatles”; they were called “The Quarrymen” then. It was recorded 2 years before Ringo even joined the band, so it’s one of the few Beatles tracks to not feature him on drums. I’m not 100% sure about this but I’m assuming that the drummer on the 1960 recording was Pete Best, the man who Ringo ultimately replaced.

It’s Spector although ‘Spectre’ would have been better. All round production genius/wall of sound creator for Crystals, Ronettes, Ike & Tina Turner etc before he lost his marbles entirely, got into waving guns around and shooting actresses. Died while serving a sentence for murder. The Beatles had hired him to see if he could pull something releasable from the Get Back sessions; if anything he made them worse. The slush on The Long and Winding is one of the low points on the album

If i were you id look up Let It Be Naked for a couple of alternate, stripped down versions. Across the Universe and Ling and Winding Road are both far better in the naked version. Edit...had to comment after the title track. Its definitely a stunner and probanly my favorite sing to see oeople hear for the first time. It's the kind of song that, if rhey had never recorded another thing, would still have given them lasting fame all in it's own.

The reason people insist on listening to let it be before abbey road is because they didn’t actually know that would be the last album (and it wasn’t they made another one right after) but they were heavily drifting apart at this point. This album to me represents them trying to connect again by returning to their old style and old numbers (one after 909, for you blue, etc) while also in some cases mourning what they used to have (let it be, long and winding road, two of us, and even across the universe; John sings nothings going to change my world cause he knows his world was changing and he didn’t want it too). Paul sings Get Back to where you once belong as a rallying cry to them all, they have to return to each other and make it work. Then with that feeling they work on the masterpiece that is abbey road.
@etc7070

I have much to comment about! Where to start... Well, this Beatles journey really was a long and winding road for you, and I'm glad you took it. This moment is like the last 30 minutes of an incredible movie, or the last few chapters of a favorite book. I know what's coming, and I'm excited for you that you're going to experience it, but sad that it's nearing the end. What you said about other KZfaq reactors, there's truth in that...most do not seek the larger context and are happy to just hear a couple of songs without knowing the bigger picture. Yes, this is music, but it's also knowledge! I like that you are now able to compare and contrast the overall sound of Let it Be to their earlier work. I was like YES, THIS. They were absolutely trying to "get back" to their roots. And the thing was, they made it sound gooooood. Funny that you pointed out that you weren't really feeling "One After 909" but you recognized that was the sound they originated with. That song is actually one of Lennon and McCartney's oldest songs that they ever wrote together, when they were teenagers! They tried recording a version of it in 1963, but it wasn't working for them, so it was never finished. This sped up bluesey version on Let it Be, with Billy Preston on keyboards (at this point they needed Billy around to keep the peace and to inject some new elements into their sessions) is the result of their waiting until the vibe was right. As for my top five...I honestly can't pick, I need the whole album as it is 😆

Btw, make sure to use the ORIGINAL album arrangement with 'Her Majesty' AFTER 'The End'.

Having puzzled over the meaning of the phrase 'Dig a Pony' for many a long decade (not continuously, you understand, but from time to time) I have finally reached the conclusion that it means (Tara-tara, drum roll...) 'I like taking a cr*p'. The word dig meaning 'like/ appreciate/ understand' was common beat(nik) slang in the post war, late 40s and 50s period, carrying over into the 1960s and beyond. Read Jack Kerouac (On the Road and Old Angel Midnight are good, or there's the Dharma Bums) for a glimpse into this fascinating art (mostly poetry, then music) movement and subculture that gave the Beatles part of their name. Look up the Beat Poets, and Beat music/ the Merseybeat sound (from the River Mersey on which Liverpool was built). The word 'pony', as well as meaning: a small horse, a small dancer, a small measure of alcohol, or 25 pounds in British currency, can also mean ordure or the process of passing it. In that last sense, it's derived from Cockney (London working class) rhyming slang 'pony and trap', meaning cr*p. As with 'apples and pears' for stairs you can drop the rest of the phrase and just use the first, non-rhyming word, 'apples' to represent stairs. The original purpose of this coded style of speaking is said to have been for the purposes of keeping criminal activities secret, especially from police or would-be informers.

1 after 9.09 is an early song-writing effort from their teenage years. The lyrics and form appear to be inspired by one the Beatles' early musical heroes, Chuck Berry, a (black American) pioneer of rock n roll. His songs Nadine and Maybelline are all about dashing around endlessly after a frustratingly elusive woman on various means of transport from buses to automobiles. Somehow he can never quite catch her. 1 after 9.09 has that same theme of racing around in a futile effort to catch up with a girl, this time involving trains. (The train after the 9.09 am or pm train, specifically.) This is how they learnt their craft, by copying the song writers and performers they most admired, always trying to add their own original twist, until they could write entirely original songs of their own. And this is the stuff they were 'getting back' to towards the end of their time together - their early inspirations and the basic driving rhythms of rock n roll..

The break up of The Beatles is thought of as part of the decline of the British Empire. The people knew it was the end after Let It Be, John had already done 2 records with Yoko, Paul already had a solo album promoting about, which John thought was using the break up as promo for his solo album. George already had like 30 plus songs ready for a double solo album. This version version which you heard of the Let It Be album was not the original idea, it was supposed to be a stripfown version without overdubds. In the 90s it came out as Let It Be...Naked. Pleaaaaaseeee when you finish everything but before the solo quest, do the Love album!
