The Beatles’ brief 1966 tour of West Germany, Japan and the Philippines began on this day, with two concerts at the Circus-Krone-Bau in Munich, Germany.
The shows took place at 5.15pm and 9pm. The second show was filmed by German television network Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF), and followed a brief afternoon rehearsal set for the cameras. The footage was shown as Die Beatles on channel two on Tuesday 5 July, from 8-8.45pm.
Also appearing on the bill were Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers, The Rattles, and Peter and Gordon. The German leg of the tour was known as the Bravo Blitztournee, and was sponsored by the entertainment magazine Bravo.
The Beatles’ set throughout the tour consisted of 11 songs: ‘Rock And Roll Music’, ‘She’s A Woman’, ‘If I Needed Someone’, ‘Day Tripper’, ‘Baby’s In Black’, ‘I Feel Fine’, ‘Yesterday’, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, ‘Nowhere Man’, ‘Paperback Writer’, and ‘I’m Down’.

I’m just shy of 73 now, but every time I hear them I’m 18 once again. I feel so lucky to have come of age during those magical years of amazing musicians and singular music. Today’s music, while some of it is really quite extraordinary, simply doesn’t capture an age or a life like this music did, and still does.

The Circus Krone concert stands alone in 1966, an oddity. Instead of the usual huge venues, the Beatles are in a rather intimate setting, a mere few feet away from the fans. The improved Vox amplifiers actually had enough power to be heard this time! Additionally, unlike the 1966 American tour, the Beatles all seem joyous about playing, especially John Lennon. They put on a great show with a lot of enthusiasm, as if it were 1964. It might feel like 1964 since most of the songs are from that tour (Rubber Soul was hard to replicate on stage, and Revolver had just been recorded but not released yet). The gems here are hearing more recent songs, especially John's "Nowhere Man" and "Day Tripper" (too bad it was just a snippet for DT). George's If I Needed Someone is another treat to see performed live. Paul's Yesterday is not done solo acoustically (per earlier years) but with the band backing up his epic song. Times were a changing and the Beatles would stop touring in just a few months, but for one moment, the band was sort of "home", playing before a German audience in a small setting and having a great time.....perhaps like the Hamburg days. Kudos to the few people (and German TV Network) that had movie cameras and sound equipment to record this priceless event way back in 1966!

Yes, and so great to see them enjoying themselves! After the awful way they were beaten up in the Philippines and then the record burnings, death threats and endless harassment in the US over John's misconstrued comment mentioning Jesus, plus the fact they could never hear themselves play and were carted around in the back of a van like pieces of furniture, it's no wonder they stopped touring.

United States is where the money's at. And the United States has also produced some of the greatest rock, Blues, southern rock, contemporary Rock, jazz woven in with rock, bands in the world. From The Doors to Steely Dan, to Lynyrd Skynyrd, to Credence Clearwater Revival, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, to Steve Miller. And you forgot to mention the great English rock band Cream with Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton when it comes to Great English rock bands. That's to be expected though, so many great rock bands and variations of Rock music. And I left out Steppenwolf and the Jefferson Airplane as well. Alvin Lee and 10 Years After comes to mind, I believe they were English. In fact I believe Alvin Lee lived right next to George Harrison after Harrison acquired Friar Park Hanley on the Thames. The musicianship on 'I Feel Fine' is just plain remarkable. The melody they execute on their guitars while belting out vocals is just unmatched by anyone, anywhere. They were simply the very best of the best and if you were treated to seeing them live and realized it, you were one very fortunate lover of great music indeed. Oh, and it's John playing the lead melody, not George, while singing lead, in the second position with a pinky stretch. He was underrated as a guitarist. That is so tremendously difficult to achieve especially in a live venue where you can hardly hear yourself. Watch John at 10:44 on just absolute genius. God I miss him.

You forgot Ringo's exqisite drumming on 'I Feel Fine'! A left-handed drummer, Ringo uses his right hand to hit the bell chop at that tempo whilst the toms with his left. As a drummer, I can say it takes a little practice for most of us to do it to this tune. Starr's a creative, musical drummer who influenced so many of us when were kids in the 60s-70s.

He has a tremendous heart and soul too. Thanks.

John and George are trading that riff on Feel Fine. John plays the opening riff, but George takes it over when John starts singing.. Then John plays it again as soon as he stops singing. During the verses, you can clearly see John just strumming, and George playing the riff. Plus, when George moves the microphone away from John, the riff stops, because George has to stop playing. Then you can see and hear George start playing it again. George also obviously played the lead during the break. You can see him. Then John takes over the riff, then he gives it back to George during the verse. Very cool!
@songshineoriginalmusic
@songshineoriginalmusic Жыл бұрын
@@sarahm.5356 You are not wrong necessarily that's a good point, George is comping John not truly trading off, during the verses with the hammer down/pull off part of the melody, although he misses it in the first and second line of the first verse, and John is playing a barred G7addA with a very difficult pinky stretch that is particularly hard to play and hold in that position because the frets are fairly far apart. The comping is set in the background. I just tried the lick again for the first time in years, and yeah, still hard to do and sing even without the ornamentation of the hammer/pull off bit. When they drop to the 5 chord, D, they both are playing it although you can mainly hear John. When the mic is moved, George had not really played it because he missed it in the first line of the first verse and again when he moves the mic. Then it goes 5. 4, 1 in rhythm and John plays the riff on the 1 with George comping (she's in love with me and I feel fine). We mostly hear John playing it. Not sure what you mean by George obviously played the lead part during the break. You mean the lead break? That's George playing the lead break, and John playing the riff, then they come back to the five chord, and they both play it again. I view it as George comping John during the verses otherwise John plays the lick, except on the drop to D and possibly on the return to the 1 chord, G, where they both play it but we can mainly hear John's guitar when they do.

Not enough words! 🎼🥁 George Harrison Hare Krishna! thank you immensely.. what a great video. Regarding whose hair was always the most fine, shiny, clean, styled and beautiful all over his head... Well... "hair-i- son" of course. George my favorite gentleman Beatle is such a friend to the Hare Kṛṣṇa people. Actually in the year here, 1966, the first recording of the Hare Krishna mantra chant came out in NYC. It was aired on an all night radio station, with towers on the Empire State building which could be picked up in those quiet hours as far away as Britain & South America. Evidently George heard it, copied down the address to order, and ordered about 300 copies. That started his relationship of devotion to the great Śrīla Prabhupada, and he donated over $20,000 to print the translated scriptures, as well as a mansion near London which runs still today as an international temple sanctuary, gardens and cow sheds for pure milk delicacies. George of course traveled to India. His Hare Kṛṣṇa friends remained his steadfast friends through his whole life. Words from George appear in Kṛṣṇa Book. 😘🇬🇧🇺🇸🇮🇳😍. Many songs inspired by KRISHNA 🌺 from Harrison.. "my sweet Lord", "living in the material world", "I am missing You".... By chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare one inevitably arrives at KṚṢṆA Consciousness. @@victormorgado5318 Yeah, your right. I wish someone would colorize Hard Days Night. The B&W makes it look dated. It was 50 years ago but still. It could use a touch up to make it more accessible. I’m not a fan of B&W. It works well with some films but life is in color, not B&W so it’s not accurate or real. It’s stylized. But color was a luxury back then. Now it’s a choice. And you can always turn off the color.

Police film, that explained the missing song bits, but a good camera man, nice and steady. Color film was still very new. Look at how major motion pictures from this period, mostly browns and reds and not much else. Terrible color balance and poor clarity. Many were colorized years later. In the states, home movies were lit with huge light bars with 4 large flood lights. Color TV in the states was still new, with Black and White being most common, with the color protocol NTSC (Not The same Color haha) which varied the color balance channel to channel, and even camera to camera.

This video is priceless. Who would believe "a liitle dance band" (George) could have such an impact. Only if you were there. Yet, because of fortunate circumstance (and someone saving the film, and some other someone {le mélomane} pulling the fragments together) we all have now the chance to be Beatle Mania believers. That there are sections missing, and audio quality occasionally (very) iffy only underscores how lucky we are that we have this much. ....After all, that night, after the last song, all this intensity and joy disappeared completely into the rarified substance of memory carried by the lucky few.

One part of the film was made by the Munich police, to train them, how to deal with excited fans in the future. It's quite well known in Germany and has been used time and again for Beatles documentaries over the past 25 years. One of the concerts on June 24, 1966 was recorded by the TV station "ZDF" and shown for the first time, as described by Le mélomane, on July 5, 1966 in the evening program of the station.

Nice to see that even after playing these songs "zillions" of times, they still manage to make at least to blunders in "I'm down" and manage to get over them nicely. I doubt anyone in the audience noticed, though..Ringo had to smile after one of them; and in the other John puts his hands behind his back, as if to say "wasn't me", after he played on despite the break at the beginning of the solo.

I was living on Subic Base, PI when the Beatles gave their concert in Manila. I begged like a bitch, but, as a 3rd grader, there was no way my parents would approve my attendance. Across the street, there was a teenage cover band. They hated us. Whenever they rehearsed a Beatles song, and ONLY then, we would jump up and down on the picnic table in the carport like madmen! The Ed Sullivan concerts were life-altering and cemented my desire to be a musician. Every album was really different and thrilling to hear on release. Like Joplin and Nazareth, they mastered both the European and African American musical genres, melding them into works still fresh today.

Some notes about this show - it was the first show of the 1966 tour, and it kicked off a tour that went from (West) Germany, to Japan, and then to the Philippines (infamously). So they were obviously a bit rusty in going back to live performing, which they had taken a long break from, most recently to record their upcoming album "Revolver," which was completed only *3 days* before this concert!

Might ‘I Feel Fine’ be the best pop record ever made? I have heard it all my life (since I became conscious of music in the early 70s) and it still gives me an extraordinary thrill every time I hear it. Incredible. For all their genius in the later years, this early record just knocks it out of the park. Bravo Beatles!
@braudabo
@braudabo Жыл бұрын
A slight cough is inevitable for "I feel fine". As great as the track is, and the studio version includes the first feedback deliberately used as a sound effect (which countless guitarists have continued to do since), it cannot go unmentioned that Lennon and Harrison have "varied" the riff from Bobby Parker's "Watch your step". However, something like that was not uncommon in general and "I feel fine" was always one of the Beatles' best live tracks.

About George 🎼🥁 George Harrison Hare Krishna! thank you immensely.. what a great video.
