Rubber Soul & Revolver are the pivotal albums of their transition into another whole realm of musicianship; their musical evolution is just fascinating to me. This could be in a time capsule and one would be hard pressed to date it; think the same could be said about most of their songs. Great request & reaction 👏🎶

Another song from this same album is “In My Life”. This whole album is a masterpiece. Their songs tended to be short because, at the time, they would not be played on the radio if they were longer than three minutes. Their music had evolved from “pop” music to more mature, sophisticated material by the time this album came out. This was the first time they used the sitar, which George had learned to play in India. That’s the unusual sounding stringed instrument in the background of this. Great reaction. More Beatles please!

Reporter asked: “I’d like to direct this question to Mr. Lennon and Mr. McCartney. In a recent article, Time magazine put down pop music, and they referred to ‘Daytripper’ as being about a prostitute, and ‘Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)’ as being about a lesbian. I just wanted to know what your intent was when you wrote it, and what your feeling is about the Time magazine criticism of the music that is being written today.” Paul McCartney answered: “We were just trying to write songs about prostitutes and lesbians, that’s all.”

They are also known for pulling the leg of the interviewers. The band members got really tired of the endless questions about the meaning of their songs, what they were thinking when writing and so on. At one point Paul McCartney answered that he was thinking of a banana. He tried to explain that it is and was a tough work to write songs around the ideas and convince oneself to present them to others since they knew each other so well.

As I understand it. Back in the early sixties radio stations would only play songs around 2 minutes long. A bit later in the sixties the Beatles started releasing songs longer than 2 minutes and the radio stations had no choice but to play them.

The song was originally going to be called "She Said She Would" but they decided it was to risky for the time (1965) and John changed the lyric to Norwegian Wood.

This entire album is amazing. John Lennon is the consummate songwriter. The term Norwegian Wood is a fake wood that was used to make cheap furniture. The song is about an affair Lennon had in London in 1965. The possible correlation between the two is interesting but it was never actually spoken. The instrument you are hearing is a sitar played by George Harrison, giving it a mystical background. The genre was very hippy, psychedelic in composition and appropriate for the time. IMHO, Rubber Soul is their best work and mostly features Lennon, my favorite. I still have original copy. Oh…. BTW, I was six. Does that tell you anything about what they contributed to music and culture?

I lived in Oslo from 2012-18 and this beautiful blonde Norwegian girl fell in love with me and I didn't realize it until it was too late. The thing is she once invited me to her new place to literally show me her one-room apartment and there was nothing only a Persian rug and we sat there talking and after some of her friends arrived I started feeling bad and had to leave even though she asked me to stay. The lyrics of this song bring back so many memories man holy sheet...

This LP was released in December of 1965 (you know, for the Christmas sales angle) and basically 2 1/2 years after "She Loves You". 6 #1 LP's, 2 movies and several world tours and they had still progressed to this point. This LP took just over a month to record. They are no longer in matching suits and "Beatle Boots", their name isn't even on the cover of the LP (first time for any group), that's how famous they were. This song was written by John and is a veiled refence to an extra marital affair he had. The use of the sitar is also credited as the start of the incorporation of World Music into the Pop genre. Carry On!!

I remember when I used to live by the firehouse........you have good taste and good ears, John Lennon was a killer rhythm player he's playing a Gibson J-160E acoustic-electric that he used all the time, that's George playing sitar. Try "Taxman" and watch Beatles last live performance on "Don't Let Me Down", it's great seeing young people digging the music I grew up with.

The Beatles were friends with Dylan, who introduced them to the herbage around this time. They recorded Rubber Soul with inspiration from partaking and the folk music Dylan was known for. Dylan, however, inspired by the Beatles "rock" music, famously plugged in the guitar and with backing instruments, recorded "Bringing It All Back Home," "Highway 61 Revisited," and "Blonde on Blonde" from '65-'66. The song "4th Time Around" off of B.o.B. was Dylan's response to Norwegian Wood. Funny storyline that seems to conclude the story Lennon wrote... Also interesting this video is 4 minutes 20 seconds! 😎

The first pop tune with a sitar on it. The Yardbirds aanted a sitar on their song Heartful of Soul but the indian sitar player couldn't handle the western rhythmic feel. The Kinks had a song See My Friends that had an indian feel but no sitar so the sitar in this didn't come from nowhere. Actually, George Harrison first heard the sitar during the filming of Help! As there is an indian ensemble playing in that movie. The american version of the album Help! Is the soundtrack to that movie featuring that ensemble on a couple of tracks.

@Zolar Czakl Indeed, but at the same time it has to be said that their views and how they remember the situations has changed over the years. E.g Lennon admitted later that during the time of "Lennon Remembers" book, he was out of his head and that some of his talk was hot air, saying things like George Martin did not produce us that much, which he apologised to Martin.

Good Beatles song choice. Of course, any Beatles song will do! 😁 There are well over 200 Beatles songs and you've only scratched the surface. If you're open to song suggestions here are a few, two for each period. Early: "Can't Buy Me Love", "And I Love Her". Mid: "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds", "Penny Lane". Late: "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Blackbird". There so many good songs it's tough deciding what to suggest next! LOL! Enjoy your Beatles journey. ✌️😎

Great Lennon song from Rubber Soul 1965 which Lennon called the big pot album. This song was about an affair John had and didn't want his wife to be able to decipher. The one instrument that you here throughout and in the solo is George Harrison playing the sitar, an instrument from India and was the first time ever on a pop song. Eastern culture meets the west here. Many others used it after this like The Rolling Stones. The Beatles were always two steps ahead with everyone else trying to play catch up and that's a big reason why they're the greatest band ever. This Lp was the one before Revolver and is incredible. Several really good Lennon ones on here, Nowhere Man, great song, Girl and In My Life all must listens all Beatles chill, hey it's the pot album right ? Another must listen is A Day In The Life regarded as the greatest album track ever, it will blow you away. You're a really cool dude, weren't you the one doing Dylan a little while back ? I forgot to mention A Day In The Life is off of The Sgt Pepper's Lp.

You know what's funny? The point if that story, set to that beautiful tune, was that he burned down the chick's house when he woke up. If I remember right, it was all a true story up to that point. He didn't actually burn it down. I think he was admitting that the thought had crossed his mind.

Can't help noticing no one appears to be listening closely enough to the lyrics. God knows the music is catchy enough, but the opening couplet says it all:" I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me." In other words, he had a girl, but the girl "tricked" him (had him). At the end: "So I lit a fire, isn't it good Norwegian wood". Probably not to be taken literally, but having been left high & dry, he certainly felt like setting her apartment on fire!

It has always been my understanding that this is about a brief encounter about John trying to have a one night stand with (rumor at the time) Phil Spectors then wife, Ronnie Spector. Phil was a huge producer for such acts as; The Righteous Brothers, The Beach Boys, Sonny and Cher and Ronnie and the Ronettes. As charming as John could be, he made it into Ronnies apartment. The part about John sleeping in the bathtub is rumored to be true as well. When John awoke, this Bird Had Flown! And, yes, there was furniture in her apartment made of, YOU GUESSED IT, Norwegian ( wood from the country of Norway!) wood. I am 70 years old now and have never heard any reference of Norwegian wood to marijuana. Could be! I don't know.

The Beatles like to have double meanings. Waking up alone and lighting a fire is simply a bittersweet image after a romantic evening. Norwegian wood was cheap pine paneling popular at the time. Sleeping in the bath was just showing discretion and leaving something to the imagination. Gentlemen don't kiss and tell. It's romance, folks....which was popular at the time. You had to be there.
