Apparently in order to reach that raunchy/raw/growly voice that you can hear on this track, McCartney would everyday start to sing his vocal parts to this song very early in the morning for a week. McCartney "When we were recording 'Oh! Darling' I came into the studios early every day for a week to sing it by myself because at first my voice was too clear. I wanted it to sound as though I'd been performing it on stage all week"

John never dissed Ringo. that was a joke a one hit wonder British comedian made many years after Lennon passed. Lennon used ringo on his first solo album, he thought ringo was a brilliant drummer.

That John quote about Ringo was never from John. It was from a comedy sketch from an English comedian and somehow it was attributed to John. He never said that. John loved Ringo as the band's drummer.

Just a note to tell you that if The Beatles hadn't appeared as they did, maybe the music you like and do nowadays would never have existed... They changed everything: mentalities, music, way of life, etc... They really changed the world! So did the invention of mini skirts by Mary Quant... but maybe The Beatles also gave to that as well!

Always loved this song. Kind of an old style song with Beatles innovative approach. Those background vocals and those sparse guitar stabs. And of course Paul’s insane vocal. A deep cut gem.

The song is Paul’s plea to John not to leave the group. At the time, there was much discord among them with John and every member at times threatening to leave. So indeed it was very personal from Paul. After all they had known each other since 1957, when John invited Paul to join his group The Quarrymen. And the rest as they say….😁

In addition to all the things you mentioned, which was great, and I'm glad you shouted out that bass guitar line, it's just so perfect and so cool the little smears that he does and it's so thick and heavy. And don't forget the piano just always there as a texture and I also really love what Ringo was doing on the hi-hat here. Sometimes just listen to the song and try to focus on only that. It's not predictable when he does that little pattern but it's perfect for the music. And one thing that made Ringo great was the ability to really do just the right drumming and leave a lot of the predictable stuff out to give everything more punch. Referencing Charlie Watts of the Rolling stones, another drummer was asking him about his style and saying that he was minimalistic and he nodded and said, yeah about the only person who leaves more out of what could potentially be done is Charlie Watts. I think he was quite deliberate in that and there are times when he really shows off his chops. Sometimes early and sometimes late in the Beatles, but mostly his chops were that understanding of manipulating space in an arrangement.

Yeah, you should never underestimate the deep tracks from a one-hit wonder band....jus' sayin'.😉 Paul really wanted his rough voice for this one, but he didn't want to totally damage his voice trying to sing it, so he only did one take each day, belting it out each time. It took him 7 days to get the right take. According to the book included in the 2019 Abbey Road Super Deluxe Edition, it was Paul on piano, John on guitar & George on bass(!). Apparently, not an uncommon thing for the lads to switch roles sometimes. Cheers! 🪲🪲🪲🪲

That "not even the best drummer in the Beatles" quote is (sadly perhaps) apocryphal. Ringo was the business. That said, Paul was a more than capable drummer (he could play pretty much anything); that's Paul on drums and bass on The Ballad Of John & Yoko, with John on rhythm and lead guitars.

Hi there, awesome reaction For you own edification, John lennon never dissed Ringo, that was an English comedian who came up with that quote. Here are Lennons actual thoughts on his friend, ""Ringo was a star in his own right in Liverpool before we even met. He was a professional drummer who sang and performed and had Ringo Starr-time, and he was in one of the top groups in Britain but especially in Liverpool before we even had a drummer. So Ringo's talent would have come out one way or the other." P.S. Paul on piano/vocals, John on guitar, George on Bass and RINGO! Cheers!

The story about Ringo not even being the best drummer in The Beatles is apocryphal, i.e. completely made up. The rest of the band knew Ringo was a great drummer, and he undoubtedly was. Just listen to Rain, I Am The Walrus, or countless other tracks. His unique drum breaks were quite remarkable in his day and have been copied by many other great rock drummers since. He was the business and it's a shame that that dumb story has gained traction.

Not just great drumming by Ringo but Paul's bass is wicked great, he's also on piano. George's guitar on the chours is great. Oddly, John only contributed backing vocals on this one. Iv'e been listening to The Beatles since 1964 and to this day through my headphones I'll hear a note or sound I've never heard before and trust me, I've listened to a whole lot of Beatles like a week doesn't go by that I don't listen to some Beatles. I can't say that about any other artist. By far the greatest and most influential band in the history of recorded music and it ain't even close. To any Swifty's out there. You can kiss my ass with your delusional "Oh my God TS is bigger than The Beatles and shattering all of their records" STOP THAT BS! Do 5 mins of research before running your mouths and you'll see she isn't and never will shatter any of their records or ever be bigger than The Beatles. Will anyone give a damn about TS 50 years from now? No! But The Beatles music will still be played and loved and studied just as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart are studied and enjoyed over 200 years later. That's a fact. Peace ❤❤
