Hello- I was the original mastering engineer on the USA album! You can tell if you have a first pressing as it will say "Mastered by Capitol" followed by "ED" in script. I recall spending a lot of time on the sound of each track!!!!

Maybe you can answer a question that has been nagging at me for ages: Why didn't Capitol use the unique original U.S. mono single mix of I Am The Walrus on the Rarities album? Since there are other mono tracks on the album, stereo-dominance at the time isn't the issue. The unique rough-mix quality of the single provides a grittiness that is perfect for that song. We understand wanting to add the extra intro bit (which was available in mono), but the extra beats before 'yellow matter custard' were only available in mono, which were then dropped into an otherwise stereo mix (not counting the mono change at 'Sitting in an English garden...'). There are also one or two minor differences unique to the Capitol single mix in Ringo's drumming. As it is, to this day the only way to get that Capitol 45 mix is by having a copy of that single. BAD Capitol, BAD!!

@@davidreckamp8161 Hi David- the short answer is - "I have no idea"!!! I had NOTHING to do with the selection or editing. I was just sitting in my room when Wally Traugott came in and said- "Hey Ed I'm really busy I wonder if you could take over this one for me"? A Beatles record- WOW- I was thrilled beyond words. (Of course Wally was not too busy, he was just being ever so kind and generous- which is how he was!) I just had to go with what was on the tape.

Being a poor High School Student in 1978, I badgered my local record shop in Adelaide (Andromeda Music) for a copy out of the box. They refused but took my phone number to ring me when they got one. I did find one in the interim in Melbourne, but Andromeda kept their promise and phoned me 2.5 years later!

I bought a UK import of the Rarities album - from Andromeda around 1979-80 (also as a poor high school student 🙂). Which brings me to a question you (or anyone may know the answer to - Andrew?) - did the UK Rarities ever get a standalone release in Australia? Oddly (given Australia usually followed UK releases), we did have a local release of the USA Rarities (and just in case anyone is wondering after seeing Andrew's video - that Australian release also referred to Lennon having blisters on his fingers; I'm looking at it now) - so it would be interesting if Australia released both versions....

"I'm Only Sleeping" was actually a bit of a revelation at the time, because the Capitol version (from "Yesterday and Today") had different sound effects. Now, the Capitol version is the rarity. In fact, a modern "Rarities" for me would include Capitol mixes of I'm Looking Through You, I'm Only Sleeping and the superior (IMO) mix of She's a Woman from Beatles '65. ... Revisiting this record, I am surprised to see Capitol left off "I'm Down" - which was the only one of three B-sides (the others being The Inner Light and You Know My Name) you couldn't get on a US LP (Introducing the Beatles was readily available in shops through the '80s).

Along side your suggestions for a new Rarities album, I would include: the US single mono version of I Am The Walrus with the extra beats, It's All Too Much from the Yellow Submarine film with the extra verse, All My Loving with the hi-hat intro, She's A Woman with the count-in, I Feel Fine with the noise prior to the feedback at the beginning, and the US mono mix of I'm Only Sleeping. I would love to see a new Rarities album! BTW the US Rarities album was the first place I heard Misery, There's A Place, The Inner Light, and You Know My Name (Look Up The Number).

This is a great video. Strangely, I just listened to this on a vinyl record I bought in Pennsylvania in 1980. At that time I was working my way back to the Beatles through Led Zeppelin, The Who, and McCartney and Wings, so I was discovering the Beatles. The record I have has been played twice, so it’s in amazing condition. I sold most of my records in college (but kept the Zep and Beatles records), and have only recently (last 2 years) gotten back into vinyl when I acquired a circa 1990s stereo system. The song that was most interesting was Acriss the Universe, which is probably closer to what was originally intended. Phil Spector’s production has layered over what sounds like a very direct unvarnished version of the song, in which you can still hear the two female background vocals (can’t recall their names). I like this version better--fresher, more immediate, cleaner. The German version of She Loves You is spectacular. So glad I held onto this one over all these years, and thankful for the serendipity of having just listened to it about a week before finding this video!

Been on a little break, but now I’m back! I see that I have some catching up to do haha! Love it! Great video! Because I was born after the internet was invented, I’ve had the opportunity to find information about versions of certain songs, so none of the rarities albums had tracks that are “rare” by my standards. Because of that, I have not paid them too much attention, but now, I really want to pick up a German press of the UK version! Love the in-depth information about these records, I didn’t even know pressed a few UK-version of the rarities album! That’s one that I need to be on the lookout for! Now, I need to go and watch your newer videos!

Thanks again Andrew for a very interesting video, I look forward to these each week 😉 My idea for a different type of new Rarities album is this. 1962-1966 & 1967-NOW, both double albums, companions to the original releases, but featuring the best released out-takes so far, from the new deluxe box sets etc., with the same track listing exactly of the originals. And they could use alternate photos from the same shots on red & blue. So, Red '1962-1966 GREATEST DELUXE' & Blue '1967-NOW GREATEST DELUXE'. Will have to wait for more early releases to come out, but we know they have them. Just a thought...Cheers 😉😀

I picked up the Capitol release when I did a road trip in the USA in 1980. Your discussion on it had made me want to relisten to it again. For me it was more a gimmick album, with the highlight being the fabulous inside cover picture,( which I never knew about until I got the album), and the German version of She Loves You. Quite an understatement there. Other than the US releases being quite different than the UK versions, I had no idea there were so many variations. Without hearing them, though, I'm not so sure the distinctiveness would be discernible by many at all, and my hearing is not what it used to be, either.

Enjoyable film as always! Sounds like you had a similar experience to me growing up. My mum bought all the original mono Beatles albums from With The Beatles to Sgt Pepper so I already had access to quite a collection once I was hooked in the early 80s. Remember buying the UK Rarities and it was brilliant to fill in the gaps in the collection. It wasn't easy tracking down every song because you still had to buy some form of hits collection to get all the non-album singles tracks. A book worthy of mention was the excellent Long & Winding Road by Neville Stannard from 1982 which was my bible for Beatles records and was full of all the releases that were so hard to track down in those days. My copy of the follow up on their solo releases (Working Class Heroes) is practically falling apart from being looked at so much! I dread to think how many hours I've spent scouring record fairs in the 80s and 90s trying to find some odd single because of an obscure B side! All part of the fun though.

I first heard the Capitol Rarities album when I checked it out from the public library. "Love Me Do" was so scratched up that the stylus literally ran right over it and skipped to "Misery." In 1990 I won ten Beatles albums from a "send us your ten favorite Beatles songs" thing the host did every day, and Rarities was one of the albums they sent. It was great to FINALLY hear the Ringo "Love Me Do"! I still spin it every once in a while. It's a great listen, but now I can easily spot the edits on "I Am The Walrus." Real rarities for me: the original Y&T "I'm Only Sleeping," the hi-hat version of "All My Loving" (which shockingly I've heard no fewer than THREE TIMES on the Sirius XM Beatles channel recently), maybe a track from the reverbed US stereo pressing of Rubber Soul (probably "Think For Yourself" has the most audible reverb), the original stereo mix of "Paperback Writer" from which the mono mix was folded, "The Beatles Movie Medley" (for completion's sake)...

And I wish they had included “I’m down” on the American version… That would have left just 4 distinct tracks that were not on the original 17 capital albums or Rarities (AHDN, From Me to You, and the 45 versions of Let It Be and Get Back). The German version of "She Loves You"was actually released as an A side on Capitol in Canada in 1964.I'll Get You" was the B side as per the English language version. My guess for this release would be owing to the fact that "She Loves You" was their breakthrough single in Canada in 1963,selling 150,000 copies and the result of Capitol of Canada giving faith in Paul White's tireless support in the Beatles where they previously questioned his dedication.Perhaps you might want to do a vide o on Paul White considering how he championed them in the way that he did.If anyone in the North America music industry really believed in the Beatles pre Beatlemainia,it was definitely him. Thanks again for another fine video.I really do enjoy watching these

I bought the US version of Rarities when it was released. That was my first introduction to the Ringo version of Love Me Do. I never knew why there was extra laughing in the mono mix of Helter Skelter. George Martin spent far more time on mono mixes than he did with stereo mixes. That was understandable as mono was the preferred format. Stereo was just a quick afterthought for the few who might actually own a stereo record player. I was already well aware of the history of the variations of different releases in different countries. Most of what was rare was merely rare in the US. But I did finally get to hear Misery and There's a Place in stereo.

I have the Dutch and UK versions and the US 1980 revamped pressing. When I originally bought the US version in 1984 I was blown away by it cause I never heard these versions before. I played it over and over again. I grew fond of the version of Penny Lane with the picolo notes at the end. I like listening to the UK/ Dutch pressings (they're the same) if I just want to listen to a compilation album.

Excellent video! I would suggest the U.S. version of "I'm Looking Through You," with the two intro breakdowns before Paul pulls it together. Also, the original 1967 mono 45 release of "All You Need is Love" has John at the beginning, and very quietly muttering, "check" just before he starts to sing, and just before the fadeout ends, he says, "I luv it." The mono version of "Norwegian Wood" contains someone coughing after the line, "She asked me to stay, and she told me to sit anywhere." The mono version of "Blue Jay Way" has no backwards backing vocals, plus an even darker mix. The mono version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" has John's lead vocal double-tracked in places, changing the texture. And the mono version of the Sgt. Pepper Reprise has six beats before Paul's "One...Two...Three...Four." So much out there.

All of these titles are in the Capiphone project,Andrew!!!It will be a blast!!!! The Live Me Do and PS I Love You on the Odeon singles set in the Project are from the red label 45!!Note:The vocals are more vibrant on Love Me Do,however the engineers at EMI apparently weren't happy with loudness on PS I Live You and toned down the mix entirely.Compare the Parlophone red label, and the Capitol Canadian against the Tollie US copies-the mix difference is definitely notable. Both PS mixes are in the project-the former on the singles set,the latter on" Its The Beatles"-the stereo program containing the debut

In 1980, you could go into a record store and find the Capitol rainbow label on (to my knowledge) two albums: Rarities and Get The Knack, which was inspired by Meet The Beatles!. However, the label on Get The Knack was nearly identical to the 1960s label, right down to the font. The Knack had it written in their contract that the original rainbow label be used.

Duophonic stereo enhancement is the audio equivalent of an optical illusion. Offset echo in the channels makes mono sound like stereo. It sounds fuller and tricks your ear quite effectively. It's so effective that you have to fight your senses to realize you aren't hearing real stereo. It's no wonder this simple cheat was used to create virtual stereo on mono recordings of the Beatles and other artists.

Me and my brother were big Beatles fans in the pre-Google world of the late 70s and early 80s so all our record knowledge came from spending hours rummaging through record stores. It was great fun in those days with all the 12” artwork. We had no idea either Rarities existed until we came across the U.K. rarities first in a record shop in Norwich. A real revelation: so many songs we’d never heard of. The sleeve gold printing began to wear off almost straight away so I typed it out. Still got it. We came across the U.S. version just months later in Chester. That was amazing because we had no idea there were different versions of some songs. Still got that too.

Thank you for this terrific review of these oddities. I did not realize that "I Am The Walrus" Stereo with extra beat and "Penny Lane" with piccolo trumpet coda was on the "From Liverpool - The Beatles Box". I missed that on my listen. If the tapes were made for that box, they could have been easily dubbed for the Rarities LP. Perhaps intercompany communication was not Capitol / EMI's strong suit. I also noted how bad "Penny Lane" sounded on Sgt. Pepper's box set. That was a true shame.

Both of those songs were Suppled to EMI from Capitol, on Oct. 13, 1980. Tape #AR47797 has "Love Me Do, And I Love Her, Help!, I Am the Walrus, Penny Lane" and "I'm Only Sleeping". Also on that same day on tape #AR47783 has "Thank You, Girl, All My Loving" and "Baby, You're A Rich Man". For some strange reason "Thank You Girl" on the Mexican box set is in true stereo, without the Echo and Reverb that was released everywhere else. For that version they only copied the American "The Beatles Second Album".

I purchased a used copy of the UK press last year and had not yet played it. Turns out it is the PSLP version with the sampler wording on the sleeve. The disc itself is very thin, looking like a typical early to mid 80s EMI press. It would seem that maybe this was still being removed from the box-sets and sold separately, even when the PCM version existed? Great and informative video as always. Looking forward to the next one!!

In 1979, a bootleg appeared entitled "Collector's Items" with a gorgeous montage of rare Beatles memorabilia as the front cover. The Capitol logo was put on the cover and the vinyl making it appear as if it was an official release. The track listing was great with many rare cuts from around the world. So many people wanted this bootleg that Capitol actually took notice and realized that an album of rarities would be a big seller. When the Capitol Rarities came out, people realized that the songs included weren't really rare but simply different cuts of the same songs from the 1960's. Collectors Items remains one of the most sought after bootlegs til this day.

Excellent review and I’ve always enjoyed the American “Rarities” since I got into collecting Beatle records in 1995. The reason the Beatles' Rarities album in America was redone had to do with a bootleg called Collectors Items , which first appeared at a Chicago Beatles Fan Convention in August 1979. The track listing of this bootleg Collectors Items was more in line for it's rare material than the Beatles Rarites album Capitol was going to put out as a single album release. By October 1979, Capitol had come across a copy of Collectors Items and remade the Rarities album sourcing out material that was used for the bootleg Collectors Items album.

Another wonderful review and discussion of The Beatles. I also own both of these original vinyl releases, but I do prefer the Capitol release because of the tracks included and how they were presented. The original vinyl version of the Capitol Rarities I recorded (archived) to digital disc several years ago so I could import it to a variety of portable digital players, but I also have a cd version of the EMI Rarities that was included in an unauthorized Russian cd collection. I guess I have never really studied this "Russian" version to establish where or what recordings they might have sourced. Maybe a future topic for ya.
