The Beatles performing “Revolution.”
“When you talk about destruction, don’t you know that you can count me out"
“I did the slow version and I wanted it out as a single: as a statement of The Beatles’ position on Vietnam and The Beatles’ position on revolution. For years, on The Beatles’ tours, Brian Epstein had stopped us from saying anything about Vietnam or the war.” - John Lennon.
“Plugging directly into the Abbey Road desk and pushing the needles into the red achieved the fuzz-guitar sound. According to George Martin “We got into distortion on that, which we had a lot of complaints from the technical people about. But that was the idea: it was John’s song and the idea was to push it right to the limit. Well, we went to the limit and beyond.”
“Revolution" was directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, and filmed on the 4th September 1968 at Twickenham Film Studios.
“Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right”

I was just thinking about that riff and it dawned on me that I think I've heard a similar riff or effect in the music of Chuck Berry. And now I'm wondering if I can figure out what Chuck Berry song we would be talking about.
@DanielBartholomew1
@DanielBartholomew1 5 жыл бұрын
I just went and did a quick listen to the openings of "Johnny B. Goode" and "Roll Over Beethoven" - there isn't as much distortion on Berry's guitar - but the opening chords on those songs are still a very similar call to attention. I suspect John is lifting a chord from a Chuck Berry song and then distorting the hell out of it to create an even more powerful effect.

@@gza1976able It takes some deep knowledge to come up with that. Lennon's opening riff is almost identical to that of Pee Wee Crayton. At the same time, I expect that Lennon also knew it. I would guess that he used it as tribute, as they say. Musicians take riffs from one another all the time. I must say that it works perfectly in this Beatles song.

I understand what you're saying but it's actually not true. The guys were innovators in the studio and always looking for ways to make the sound better, tricks or not. If there was a trick they heard about, they'd use it. The big one is double tracking, where you sing two of the lead vocal tracks trying to get them to sound as near as possible. It's a bit tedious to do correctly, but you don't have to do it perfectly because the point of double tracking is that the two vocal tracks stack, but also the tiny little subtle differences between them create a powerful and enjoyable sound that's better than just copying and pasting the track over itself.

+Henry Murray Oh I'm sorry, I'm guessing you like his playing (Clapton) - I'm just being grouchy 'cos I really dislike it. Even in Cream, I love Baker's drums, Bruce's bass, vocals and songwriting but the guitar playing (and guitar arrangements) bore me senseless. But more than being bored, I actively dislike virtually every musical choice he makes. I'm particularly grouchy about "While My Guitar..." because firstly, I think it's the worst guitar solo on any Beatles track ever and secondly, after that time, it seemed that Harrison became very influenced by Clapton's high widdle-diddle 'bluesy' soloing. As you can imagine, this is a VERY minority view ;) but there it is.

What makes this the ultimate protest song is when John Lennon sings “When you talk about destruction, don’t you know that you can count me out" he immediately off mic also says "IN". 0:34 Most people miss that one word. It's the real human doubt vs the ideal that makes this song next level genius. That is John Lennon.

@@wchambers3849 You may be too young ... but, I'm pretty sure on my original, genuine, White Album, John does, in fact, say "in." Or, somebody says it..Either way. Doesn't matter. I appreciate more today than I did in 1969 -- whenever -- what talented guys they were. Especially George, who I think is underrated. His riffs were perfect for the Beatles, if not of the quality of Clapton or Mick Taylor.

Um yea? So? Paul was too technically. John and Ringo we’re both technically 29, why is this noteworthy? They’d been a band for over a decade at that point, that’s the impressive part, not the fact that they were still relatively young when they broke up. It’s almost noteworthy just how young they were when they started, but even that is fairly common. Most famous people are young when they become famous.
